@@WildCreates I’m glad I finally found someone that explains all the things we don’t see or understand! I painted a lot when I was younger and recently picked it up again. It wasn’t long before I was reminded how frustrated I got trying to follow along with Bob Ross. Your videos, (I’ve only seen around 4, so far) have already raised my wet on wet game, especially MOUNTAINS! Now I know why my mountains suck and how to avoid the suckdom!
@WildCreates

100% understandable - I was in the same camp.... couldn't keep up with Bob or didn't get why things worked for him and not me. I kinda use that to my advantage in my videos, since I have made EVERY mistake like 100x. I have had plenty of time to learn from them and experiment. I try my best to share what I learned so you can skip all the BS and get better results sooner.

I will try using the shop towels. I also went with Winsor and Newton Titanium white because I remember you said that was dryer then Bob Ross's. I gave up with snow breaks with my knife because I am so terrible at it. Started using my fan brush to put snow on the mountains. But I'll try these tips and see if it helps with my knife. I'm not to hopeful, Lol.

@@WildCreates That would be solid. I’m getting better at trees through practice and repetition but my bushes tend to look either very uniform or very messy. I have no idea how Bob achieves that nice lacey effect. I have been practicing using a natural sponge lately and I’ve been getting better results than with brushes.

Thanks for the chuckles, and the tips. I can't seem to get my paint to break. I have used towel method, scraping, waiting all night and come back in the morning so nice and tacky paint, the blob of white sat out too so it is thick/firm. What I haven't tried was double/trip amount on the knife. I'll try that next time, I've already frosted my mountain this morn. Yea, frosted, like a cake 😒 One little piece at a time, because I do run outta paint frequently when trying to apply the snow breaks/shadows. Anywhooo, I'm gonna add some crappy trees and then start another one. I don't think I'm at 100 attempts yet.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 9 ай бұрын
OK So ... I think I know what you are doing wrong since you eliminated everything else. You are coming in too flat of an angle with the knife. This espouses all the paint at the start and when you pull you get that big blob. Go more straight, then when you pull start flatting the knife. You can also try this little hack: kzbin.infoNuab4KRa3RE?feature=share

@@WildCreates you know, that makes sense lol. I did see your short on slicing, I haven't tried that yet. I've been busy moving my painting station to the office room that has a baby gate on the door, so my doggos can't eat my paint anymore. They just kept sneaking over there and eating it up when I wasn't looking. I didn't realize I had collected so much paint stuff! Almost looks like I'm a 'real' painter or something. 🤣

Spade Knifes can work in a pinch but are way harder to use for certain things like mountains and water lines due to its angle and shape. If you wanna have an easier time and paint more like bob, then I would get a palette knife like I mention in the video. Links are in the video description below.

Hi. Im new to this and ive been wanting to try out oil painting but im scared to catch on fire lol.. Helps a lot!!
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
I get this a lot and I should make a video about the fears of oil painting someday to address the linseed issue BUT until then I would recommend Water-Soluble Oil paints and Mediums (again I will make a video on this). As for disposing of wipes and towels that come into contact with oil paint.... you can throw them away the day after you have painted. This will allow the oil to dry up some and the oil to harden. I hope that helps

Hey Wild! When I use my Bob Ross palette knife for snow, I get a roll on the edge but when I apply it to my tissue wiped mountain, it sticks really bad and doesn't allow breaking making a blob on the contact point. I use Windsor titanium white oil paint, does it need to be thinned out with linseed oil? Thanks!
@WildCreates

You just need practice at the breaking technique is all. I suggest working your hand into it. Watch this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIuQaq2emb2GopY ) it will show you a simple way to cheat and make snow. As you get better you can expose more of the blade allowing for more paint breaks. Also make sure you watch this video to see if you are holding the knife correctly ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2bZZZWJit95eKs ) Good Luck

Aaaah that thicc white that sticks like glue when all I have is this glossy superfine whipped cream of a white....I always wondered about that. I am currently working on a landscape painting and those mountains are huge improvement from what I did few weeks ago in a "rough 16 hours total time tempera preparation sketch before I crack some oils" but I am not sure how will the white stick on this as I am not working with grainy canvas but paper impregnated with PVAc (works wonders for practice) (dries in 2 days). I think I will just not add white...I am not confident enough. And what if it just looks bad? I figured I just need to fake the grain ( thats how I finished midtones ) but I doubt I can use palette knife here, maybe I should just do tiny white grains with tiny brush like I did it all.... cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/672935181627424769/813513692301623296/IMG_20210222_215207.jpg
