Being speechless after an episode like that is 100% a valid response. There is no anime like MiA. It touches on emotions you don't even know you had and reaches into a core of humanity rarely touched.

Something I saw online a while back is a comment on why Nanachi interrupted Reg's first attempt to kill Mitty. Nanachi has been trying to kill Mitty for years, she's had countless attempts and all of them failed. Nanachi has probably had to say goodbye to Mitty every single time she attempted to kill her, not knowing if this idea would be the one that worked. When she initially says goodbye in this episode, it's rehearsed, it's a half hearted goodbye she says because she's so used to her ideas not working. When she realises that this is it, this is the time it's going to work, she breaks down and gives a real, tearful, final goodbye.

there really is something uniquely cruel about Nanachi being saddled with this responsibility in the end. she and Mitty only went down into the abyss in the first place, because they were suffering in the world above. they were both searching for a sense of comfort and belonging, and they found it with each other. but the first wound is that they willingly went to a place that would hurt them so much more than anything they were trying to escape from. and even once this horrible thing has happened to the two of them, the power dynamics within Bondrewd's facility are not on their side. Bondrewd still has control over how their lives are utilized. and by this point Nanachi can't imagine escaping it, because she can't trust her own judgement. she thought nothing could be worse than her life on the surface, and chose to come down here. look how that turned out. but the betrayal didn't end after the first offense. Mitty is still suffering, over and over again. so regardless of how Nanachi feels about once again trying to make an uncertain choice as a means of escape from misfortune... she has to act. she takes Mitty, and decides to brave the wilds of this layer, outside the facility, where she's never been before. nothing could be worse than staying there with Bondrewd... right? but then Nanachi has to start considering Mitty's condition. Mitty can't die, so none of the unknown elements of this layer should be a threat to her, in theory. but Nanachi isn't immortal, and everything in this layer could harm her. and as Mitty's sole caregiver... what will become of Mitty if Nanachi can't survive? and so begins the long, repetitive process, of trying to make a decision that will release Mitty from her suffering... only to get it wrong every time, and make her suffer worse. every single time, it's something that Nanachi has had to opt into. choosing to go into the abyss, choosing to leave Bondrewd, choosing to try and find a way to kill Mitty... every time, she's trying to find a better life. every time, it gets worse. and then, the one time she gets to make a decision that works, her only reward is finalizing the worst loss of her life. by her own choice, she loses Mitty for good. and of course, we know that Nanachi isn't to blame. she's always done the best she could, and she was just a little kid. but it's especially painful to know that every time Nanachi has suffered, there's a decision she can look back on, and regret making. and that pairs especially potently with the survivor's guilt of gaining the abyss's blessing, while Mitty absorbed it's curse.

Ben & Anna: *moved to tears by this hauntingly sad piece of art* Also Ben & Anna: "We're so sorry we're too moved to really respond." If you weren't left demolished after this episode, people would be questioning if you had hearts at all. We've all been there. This is one of those viewing experiences that taps into your sympathetic nervous system and then feeds it into a woodchipper. Mitty and Nanachi's transformation is gut wrenching, but the tragedy of Mitty's send off is the kind of thing that sits with you for a long, long time after.

Episode 11, with disgust written on any viewer's face: Oh god, what in tarnation- kill it with fire! Episode 13, with tears rolling down your cheeks: Please, Reg, kill it with fire... Honestly, if it wasn't for her immortality, I wouldn't kill her because we don't know for sure that Mitty was miserable. Maybe, living with Nanachi was good enough for her, maybe she lost her intellect. However, if she truly was imprisoned in this body...

Someone once described all the weird penis stuff, or Riko pissing herself on the table during the surgery, as creating an odd but pervading realism to the whole thing. It's not sanitized the way media so often is; in a story where Riko pisses herself on-camera, anything can happen. And that's not really good or bad, it just is a fact of the world we're watching.
@SynxSP
@SynxSP Жыл бұрын
While that's is probably one of the reasons, and I actually appreciate it (same way of how smells, taste and other mundane stuff that are not conveyed properly on a visual medium are intentionally described on MiA), another main reason is because the author is an unapologetic lolicon, and he likes to portray his tastes on his works.

Most people cry at this episode, but something a lot don't realize is (Not so fun fact) One of the Reasons Nanachi stops Reg from firing and runs back is because although not outright stated Nanachi and Mitty both are followers of that religion they mentioned earlier. Mitty requested Nanachi to carry her soul when she dies (before they ascend) and asked Nanachi to kill them to do it. Nanachi ran back and said they'd always be together as a nod to that belief.
@ookami5329

I heard an interpretation, that I like, which is that Nanachi had said goodbye so many times in the past during previous attempts that when she did it this time, it was still somewhat rehearsed, until she realized fully that this was it and shouted at Reg to stop. In any case, the whole sequence is just so well done because it shows so many layers of nuance of emotion
@lonekibademon
@lonekibademon Жыл бұрын
@ookami5329 I've heard this interpretation as well, and when I first heard it I realized they don't have to be mutually exclusive to each other. The first time I saw this episode years ago as it was live airing, I said the same thing you did when I started hearing the fricking trombones and other brass instrumentation begin bellowing in as the hot air balloon began to rise, and then I realized why this anime might very well be my favorite piece of media I've ever watched anime, film, book, art piece, whatevs, and it's because it's just a story about life and death, love and loss, risk and reward, pain and astonishment and wonder, this anime is a perfect encapsulation of what it means to be alive and to know we're all going to die one day, and what a special but painful realization and gift it is. I can honestly say your couple reaction was the most raw and sincere reaction out of the entirety of youtube, and that's saying a whole whole lot, because there's literally like 200 of these ep 13 reactions, and I feel like you both understood that what you were watching was a MASTERPIECE OF PEAK FICTION ART. That's also why Nanachi was so okay with eating horrible food - she grew up eating garbage, what it "looked" or "tasted" or "smelled" like were really secondary and tertiary considerations to whether she stayed alive or not - if it nurished her. That got me, too, when she was so over-taken with emotion to Riko's cooking. It was so good, it was so far beyond anything she'd ever eaten - which was her own horrible cooking and literal trash from her childhood... and Reg's own awful cooking ;D

This is an absolutely gut wrenching episode and your reaction is totally normal. I think everyone who is invested in the story and characters needs some time to emotional process afterwards. Great video and congrats on finishing season 1!

Bondrewd is such an astonishing character. One of the few antagonist like Handsome Jack from the game Borderlands 2 or Joker from The Dark Knight. They themselves are as good or even more complex than our heroes.

ahhh, yep... yep this episode. Still gets me everytime. Everything about this show just...weighs on me emotionally. And that's a great thing. Especially loved some of the small talk about the Abyssal Faith and the breathing space given at the end while watching the balloon rise/equipment preparation. Makes the world feel more alive.

Oh no they are traumatized now… and yeah this show is something else Also I dunno if you have noticed, but at the ending scene when Nanachi turns to look at their house one last time, you can see that the house looks like mitty, and nanachi has a reaction to that. Such a wonderful detail

ya know, this episode hits hard af for obvious reasons but personally, i've cried just as hard as like nanachi after seeing mitty get blown tf away at a point in my life. it was not a good time. When i saw this episode for the first time a few months after that, it took me all the way back to that point in my life on top of what happened in the show. i just kinda rolled up in a ball that night and felt a very powerful loneliness. Anytime i see this episode, all the trauma comes back and floods every bit of me, reminding me of what a sad and miserable time all of it bring me back to. And I love every single bit of it. the sadness and the shock coming back, it fills me with a dark warmth that vueko talks about in S2. It was traumatizing but damn, do i love every single bit of it.

Man, even watching a snipped up version through a reaction video and having it play at 2x speed I still can't avoid crying at Mitty's death.

I know this episode has multiple crying points, and everybody always talks about Mitty's death as a big one, which I agree with, but another big crying point for me is the very end when Nat finds the balloon, and you just see the little guy walking off with with what must be something very precious for him. Even with how much buildup and pacing gets lost in a reaction vid like this, I still had tears rolling down my face.

I find that this work has a terrific balance of human emotions up and down. We also realize that good and evil cannot be simply divided. Note that at the ending the town was unpopular and full of flower petals used for the funeral. Something is happening on earth. I hope you don't hate this work in this episode and continue to react. From Japan.

What an episode. Some of the most heart-wrenching, beautiful, and somehow hopeful (at the end) episodes in all of anime. Nanachi and Mitty's sad revelation. And then that ending sequence that calls back to everything they've been through. The different layers, creatures, and characters. And that track (titled "Tomorrow" if you're curious) is too good.

This was the wondrous point when I realized the extent to which you can shake a person's soul with the power of of a story is truly limitless. Well done making it this far, but there's still a long way to go til the bottom of the netherworld.

Seeing this episode again reminds me that my first journey through the Abyss was wild. Watch through episode 10 and then stop for years. Finally, my buddy starts me back up, and we finish it ALl in one sitting, starting with episode 11 on. I now personally HIGHLY advise against watching this episode, the movie, and season 2 all together. It was too much for me. I legit felt broken that morning we finished. Regardless, this anime is incredible. I may have been broken by the show, but I got addicted, too. I immediately read all of the manga that eas available at the time, and IT IS NOT ENOUGH!!! I physically hurt, not knowing what cones next. At least I can watch other folks hurt, erh, i mean enjoy the show. I'm glad ya'll get so into it.

You said something along the lines of... Nobody could handle the moment after Nanachi says their farewell to mitty, then stopping Reg and rushing to do it again, and then asking Reg to do it again. I think the first goodbye was one more mechanical, they've done it probably once every time they tried to keal mitty on their own, ready to unalive themself after. But after realizing not only that it was going to be the last time, and that they wouldn't follow her, Nanachi needed that second, more sincere farewell. Note: Nanachi's gender hasn't been revealed nor talked about, that's why I use they/them

Nanachi only doesn't like hugs because of how she was conditioned when she was a regular human - she was poor and smelly and nobody liked being around her so that's all she thinks of whenever anyone gets close to her. I know how that feels. You get too self-conscious and it's hard to get over what you knew for most of your life to let anyone else get closer in later life.
