That "Oh shit... I don't get to come back, do I?" moment is so powerful. The buildup to it that has been pretty much the whole game, and then the run to the vessel is one of the most emotionally intense experiences in a video game, ever.

If it's any consolation to your girlfriend: I'm a spaceships enthusiast, a Feldspar through and through, who landed on the Sun Station, unafraid of the anglerfish and would juke around them for fun. I also died on my first advanced core vessel run. I got too close to the sun, and while over-correcting, slammed hard into a planet and got flung into dark, cold space.

I was legit terrified, like, if we die once we remove the core we will never find out what the Eye is! And then...Oh wait a minute, it's a game and you probably can just restart from your last save. Really really intense build up to that point

I had this moment 'spoiled' for me because I watched some "(Spoiler Free!)" video that stole that single sound-byte. There were about three different times where I remembered that soundbyte, "I don't get to come back, do I?" and I thought to myself, "Is... is this it? Am I about to beat the game?" before I finally went "oh.... so, this is the one." 10/10, would spoil again, glad to find the source of the clip lol. BTW: I'm really impressed that she went the long way around (to fire her scout through the bramble seed inside of the bramble seed and then follow the signal that way) and actually made it with just enough fuel. People who go naked into the Dark Bramble even though they're afraid of it, probably scare me more than the Anglerfish.

Well, I've never played this game and all I've heard about it is that its a playable existential crisis, so I guess I'll do that before spoiling myself since you have such high praises of it in the first minute and a half. Even though I'm not watching through the video I'll still just take the time to tell you how great they all are, and that your production and entertainment value are higher than most large youtubers I know. Made my girlfriend play it. She's somewhat of a scatterbrain, especially when it comes to games (I don't think she developed her gamer intuition yet). She immediately flew to the warp core at full speed and pulled it out without a second thought. She didn't really know why she even pulled the warp core. I try to be very hands-off when she's playing, but I seriously had to just step in there to tell her that maybe she should think about what she's doing and then reconsider.

SPOILERS. After I failed to convince him for several months, a couple of my little brother's friends from school pressured him into playing, and for the fun of it they started watching him stream it over discord while I sipped a cider in the background. He was the most cracked player of all time. Died a couple of times in Dark Bramble and got spooked, then figured out that your speed on entry carries through, slapped on "push it to the limit" and then by pure luck managed to slingshot his way through the egg chamber to the vessel. It was a sight to behold. Seeing him have the realisation on the sun station was iconic, as was his reaction to the Vanilla ending. He also kicked us all out for the ending of Echoes of the Eye, and came out genuinely awestruck. One of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had, genuinely on par with my first playthrough.

It's funny, a week after I beat this game and the DLC, I frantically convinced a friend to play just so I could watch him and try to relive those feelings of discovery and curiosity through him. It's also amazing how such a lonely experience with very little writing and traditional "emotional movement tactics" is able to be so moving. Just hearing that music at the end of the video nearly has me in tears.

one of my favorite experiences with outer wilds is I was stuck on trying to get past the current on giants deep and when feldspar told me it was past his broken ship to the frozen jellyfish I thought you had to melt the ice and go inside the other root, I got stuck on that for like 3 or 4 loops and eventually I decided to look on giants deep since that had his campsite on it, and when rereading his audio log I realized that "Feldspar had already gotten to the core of giants deep by the time of making that campsite and no one had even been to dark bramble before him and since he got stuck there on his first trip it means that I was missing something unrelated to dark bramble" in other games devs would be afraid of situations like that happening since there would be no "feldspars campsite" and they would likely throw in a "I don't think theres anything left here"

Tunic is the exact same way. You never get to play it a second time because most of it is knowledge-based. It's very rewarding to play as a result and very rewarding to watch anyone play through it blind and watch them learn and grow and understand the world. I haven't played Outer Wilds myself, but I imagine the relationship to that one is more intimate, but even then I can't think of a knowledge-based, well-curated world experience ever not being one you remember and talk about forever.

Beat the base game a little while ago and figured I'd let my girlfriend have a go at it before I got into the dlc. She played less than 10 minutes. She talked to Slate once, declared that she hated the jump because you go down before you spring up, crashed the model ship immediately after taking off then letting it plumet back to the ground, jumped off a waterfall in the hearthian village and died, got the game over screen for it. Started over, complained about having to talk to people to find the observatory, complained about seeing Hal before Hornfells, after getting launch codes from Hornfells she saw the statue, talked to Hal about it, learned about Gabbro being on Giants Deep, got to her ship, looked at the log entry for Gabbro and Giants Deep, launched, saw Dark Bramble, actually sounded interested and went careening towards it at 1000+m/s, shot way past it, complained about not knowing the ship controls, I explained them to her, she was quite frantic as she sailed way past her intended target, told her to slow down and get a grip on her controls and situation and what the game was telling her. She took this as an instruction to slow the ship down, which it wasn't, and she proclaimed that she had no idea how to do that, before I explained about the Match Velocity feature of her ship and got her heading towards it again. She then sped right back up to 600ish m/s, crashed her ship against the planet, rebounded out into space in her suit, and wound up about 3km away before she got back under control. She then tried to fly her space suit back to dark bramble, complaining all the way about how slow it was, I commented once when asked if she could go faster that yes, she could, in her ship but that's ok. She did not like that answer. She got back up to 600m/s though, right as she got within 1km of the planet. She went headfirst into it and died, obviously. I did mention she might want to start slowing down by pulling back on the stick. She didn't. She got up and left as the nomai statue replayed her memories to her empty chair. She was out of the room saying the game wasn't for her before she'd even reset. Didn't have the heart to tell her to give it a second or two more, let alone a whole other try. The idea of explaining that she shot right past all the tutorials the game would give her if she just talked to people and looked around in the game about talking to people and looking around just kinda took it all outta me at the thought. Real bummer of an experience and not how I saw this wholesome and heartwarming game being taken at all. Kinda hurts, honestly. Was really looking forward to having conversations with her about it as she discovered it. She didn't even give it long enough to see 1 loop.

BUT... it somehow feels so much bigger than it is. And I think the music deserves some extra credit here too for helping to augment that ethereal, isolated, vastness of space. 10/10 from me and I can't wait for the sequel (should it ever come).

sometimes growing old is the best when you want to experience something once again. I just forget about it after 5 years and then wonder "Huh, this game actually existed... I don't remember, welp time to play it." but then again theres the popularity triat of a game where YOU CAN'T escape it no matter where you go like Minecraft

She has ALL my respect because she arrived to the eye without the ship, I ve never managed to do that, she s really smart, I had to search online to pass some puzzle, this isn't a very accessible game, maybe I m too used to openworld games that leads you hand to hand, Outer Wilds helped me to think with my head more than any other game.

When I realised I had to stop the loop to get to the eye, I was so terrified I stopped playing for a week, then I spent two weeks practicing the last voyage without actually taking the warp core. Without that, I would have ended like her.

My favorite easter egg in the game is what happens when you're next to the Ash Twin core at the end of a loop and you go back to the Ash Twin Project in the next loop. I won't spoil it here, but it's pretty entertaining

Made my then girlfriend play through Outer Wilds too while I watched back in Feb, in fact she finished just 1 day before this video came out. Sadly we broke up a few months ago and I just got around to finish the DLC. While the game constantly reminded me of her, I think the DLC story is also a good reminder that tells me to move on.

I think the reason the game is such a cathartic experience is because it teaches you that, when you loose your fear of death, live is much better. Thanks to the unique point of view of someone who can't die, we can start appreciating the beauty of things. For example, by accepting that the sun will always explode, and accepting that every 22 minutes we go back to the beginning, we can appreciate how absolutley beautiful the supernova is, even going outside to see it better, since we know we'll die anyway. That's a beauty you can't appreciate if you are scared and looking for cover. The end is the ultimate act of acceptance, jumping into the eye of the universe without knowing what lies beyond, because we have already accepted that we'll die, so might as well discover something new. You can die afraid, or you can die enjoying life to it's fullest. And once we die, just like the nomai worked only for the hearthians to discover the eye of the universe, there will be new life that will discover the wonders of the universe. And, just like the nomai, with some luck, we would have left an imprint, and we may live through their wonder and fascination. Despite this, the fucking fish still scare me :( Edit: as for echoes of the eye, honestly I don't know what message it wants to send. If anything, when i finished it, I ended feeling more dread. Do they represent what happens when you don't accept death, where you'll live only in part, corrupted by your fear, until you meet a surprising and painful end without having really achieved anything, because they were too focused on recreating their old home to try to discover something new? Or did mobius digital smoke the biggest blunt in the world? We shall never know

The only thing I dislike about OW is I could only play it once, because you only get that experience once. This is why I watch other people play it because even though it's not quite the same as playing it myself, it's a good way to get the excitement again from a second hand first play though.

OMG, I can't believe that she finished it! I kind of gave up in a couple of moments and checked online how to land on the moon and at the end, I tried to reach the ending 3 or 4 times but I died on the way or with the Anglerfish and I gave up and watched a video of the ending... I kind of regret it in a sense, because the game stuck with me after playing it and I feel a bit bad for not having the willpower to go through it... I loved how excited she was at the end

As an experienced player, it's easy to forget how _completely terrifying_ each other planet can be when you're first confronting it. I must've spent hours avoiding each death-world hell-scape, sticking to places I was more comfortable. The feeling of confidence from learning each of those worlds, and making it your friend and home, where you can jet with confidence exactly where you want to go? Irreplaceable.

Okay one thing ive gotta point out because its gotta be appreciated, everyone of course has a interesting memory of how they finished this game but you can you imagine how cinematic her experience must have been for her in that last attempt, she's fought hard to get there with a corrupted save file, then one failed attempt then she tries again, loses her ship with the crash, sneaks past the fish that has killed her so many times and not just in this section and is currently running low on oxygen before she makes it. Its great to watch because its such a great moment of her overcoming it. :)

the jellyfish and sneak on anglerfish part was very much run ender for a lot of people, some things were kinda too criptic, they even had to patch in some extra clues for the ash twin project.

Wtf, I thought you were the other dude who made his girlfriend play stuff?! It’s criminal how underrated this video is, just for how technically clean its script and editing are. And yet still, I adore your approach to her playthrough: completely hands off, to avoid even slight nudging or a minutiae of tampering with her experience. Part of the reason OW is so amazing, is because Alex Beachum and the whole team at Mobius Digital respect the player. They know we’re smart and capable enough to complete the game with as little hand holding as possible, the same approach you took! Yet, it has also become my biggest fear when introducing people to this game. Everyone I know (even the friend who introduced me to the damn thing!) has never completed OW. They end their foray early, call it “neat” and say “I can definitely see why you like it” as they leave the solar system behind. I’m then faced with the dilemma of spoiling the game slightly in an attempt to bait them into going on and I always opt not to, because I respect OW too much after the respect it’s shown us. Please make more stuff, so long as you two enjoy yourselves as much as you did here. Cheers and I pray that just like OW, this video finds its way to a wider audience!
