I started sewing 9 years ago, and your simple skirt was one of the first things i made. It gave me the encouragement to keep learning. I ended up having to stop sewing a few years ago because of health issues. Im finally ready to get into sewing again, and this video popped up. Im so excited to have this be my first project after not sewing for so long 🤗💚

Thank you Dana, just loved this video. My first piece of clothing, pretty nice...I was so excited about the pockets. I didn't have thick elastic, so I used thin elastic and three lines, really just fine. Just when I'm going to freak out, you always say the saving thing. Like I had overlap on the waist and started to panic, but you said it's fine and it was. Thanks oodles, Alexis

Light weight quilting cotton or a cotton type works also. I made mine with quilting cotton and it came out pretty nice (still learning). I enjoyed this tutorial, it was very thorough and upbeat.

What is a waist?
@rockinrobin1007Ай бұрын
Me too. I was 36-28-36 at age 25, and was a perfect size 8. I was very into aerobics. 3x a week religiously. And I lifted weights. I worked hard for that figure lol I applied for a fitting model job in NYC and would have gotten it but I lived in south Jersey and it only paid $5.50 an hour (1990) 😂 It wouldn’t have worked. My daughter is 23 and is 34-28-38 (her butt is a little bigger than mine was lol) but she is a size 4. (She buys size 6 pants at Target. They fit her the best.) That’s crazy that sizes then are not the same as sizes now. I think this skirt would be an easy first project for her.

I have some really beautiful (and expensive 😖) woolen fabric I bought last year to make a Victorian walking skirt. I never got around to making it because I was intimidated by the advanced sewing level. I think this might be a great alternative. I can have a nice shirt that's close enough to the look I was going for. I'm going to make six panels instead of two, and increase the tapered-ness of the sides so the bottom will be wider... I hope that works 🤔

This skirt will be a great 1st project for my daughter. She has not seen yet but wants to. Finding time (and space) is the issue. She is good at art (much better than me, I’m a multi-crafter). She is working while in college. She got her AAS in veterinary nursing to pay for the rest of her schooling. This is her last semester!! She will have a BS in biology, minors in chem and premed. She’s got straight As so far. She’s headed to vet school next September. She loves animals and funky clothes so she will be making some wild skirts. (I saw some cool fabric on clearance that was blue and green tie dye with white outlined dinosaurs stamped on (kinda like if you bleached the dinosaur stamp and pressed it on the fabric). She would look so cute in a calf length skirt in that fabric!

15:42 I find it helpful to sew from the waist down when attaching side seams. I don’t remember where I heard it from, but it stuck with me. It was something about how if you unintentionally pull your fabric as you sew, you will warp it more toward the hem than the waist. It is easier to even up the hem than the waist.

Love this skirt! Thank you. How would you recommend finishing the raw seams?
@MADEEveryday3 ай бұрын
You can leave raw seams as is (they might fray a bit, but it's manageable), or you can trim the edge of the seam with pinking shears (those zigzag scissors), or you can serge the seam with a serger (overlock machine). Hope that helps! - Dana

What if I just wanted to do the elastic on the back of the skirt? I can’t figure out how to do that
@chickad58206 ай бұрын
Leaving your selvage on in any project, you risk it not laying properly once washed. All selvages shrink differently than the main fabric because the wrap and weave are sewn at the factory much tighter. This causes more shrinkage then the rest of the fabric. Batiks you might get away with this because the selvage is less tight. Hope this helps... Thanks for the inspiration to get back to sewing clothes again.

I tried this, but it didn't work. I think i was missing the seam allowance for my waist measurement after i took away for the slanted edge. It was back to my true waist.
