Selling the photos for money that he either gave a portion of to Jen or supplied her drugs as a trade off. I think the “guilt” we see in Jen’s face is because when this happened to Maddie she knew she was somewhat to blame for the murder so Jen and Steph came up with a cover and the only reason Steph caught more charges was because he had photo evidence. I think Jen knew before pick up and possibly even before drop off that Maddie was gone. Otherwise why did she need to sleep in take a nap and go to bed early the night before ? Ans why did she take Maddie’s phone with her to pick Maddie up? They were coming home together so why did she need it? To call Maddie’s friends pretending to look for her is my guess .. I have an unpopular opinion about SS parents. I think as long as they cooperate and don’t do anything to impede the investigation, they shouldn’t get so much hate. If my child did something horrific, I think I would also have a phase of denial. They have obviously accepted the fact that he was a “loser”, but to think of him as a monster, they may not be able to ever face that. They may end up compartmentalizing to cope. I actually feel sorry for them because I’m sure they will be constantly thinking about what they could have done differently. I also feel for Maddie’s family since they seemed so heartbroken. I cry for Maddie and I’m just a random observer…I can’t imagine their heartbreak. As for JS, I feel anger. I am not sure if she knew about the SA, but at minimum I think she was an absent mother who preferred being hopped up on her meds sleeping then caring for her precious child.

Stephan’s mom did crafts with Maddie & was teaching her how to knit or crochet. She also wouldn’t let Jen & Stephan make Maddie sleep in the floor of Stephan’s room & let Maddie sleep in her king size bed so I bet Maddie thought if she told her about her leg going over Stephan’s leg was kind of a clue about the SA & that she would put a stop to it. I also think Maddie told the school counselor that Stephan was weird, she did t like him around, & he ate all the food because she wanted the school counselor to ask her more questions so she could tell about the SA & claim she was made to tell on him. Even when they tell or escape, victims are often still worried about getting in trouble with the abusers do they do say they were forced to tell. It just kills me that no one stood up for Maddie. If the mom suspected that, she could easily get the dad to stop paying rent with the excuse of he’s gotta move home & get a new job rather than telling her husband that their son is hurting Maddie because the dad is just a straight shooter about what a loser the son is while the mom wants to blame Jen’s influence, which I hate it when parents do that.
