Why Do People Have Accents? Fix Your Pronunciation Problems!

In this English lesson, I explain why people have accents. Every language has rules. Sometimes those rules interfere with each other. For example, in English we can have consonant clusters, but in some Asian languages, consonant clusters are not allowed! They need a vowel after every consonant. In this lesson I give you a good example of this interference happening between Japanese and English. Accents are not a bad thing, but when accents are too strong, it can hinder communication. In this series on pronunciation, I'm going to try to help you improve your English accent. But you have to decide which accent you want! I have a Canadian accent. If you want a British accent, maybe you should learn from a British teacher instead! 😅

I'm from Mexico so my mother tongue is Spanish. In Spanish, the R sound is totally different than the American R. Also, we don't have the TH sound, the Z sound or the Ng sound, and many others :)

We're an ex-British colony. The older generations were taught British English during the colonial days and passed it on to next generations. American English, on the other hand, is the variety we are more exposed to now through cinema, TV, the internet, popular songs and so on. Not many of Malaysian could really speak like the native speakers even though they were partly educated in Britain or America. Most of us will have a Malaysian accent with a trace of British or American flavour in it.

The big problem for me is linking, English has linking, so words are blended, new sounds are created or silent something like that, but it doesn't exist in my mother tongue which is Chinese, we say it word by word, we don't connect the sound of words. Thanks Mark :)

In Mandarin, we don't have the nasal sound in 'chunk', or the 'th' sound, or the dark /L/. But in northern China, we naturally have the end /r/ sound like in 'radar', so natural that if I wanna learn British accent I even can't get rid of this end /r/ sound.

The th sound in thick is like an /f/ or /s/ with your tongue in between your teeth, and the th in that is like a /v/ or /z/ with your tongue in between your teeth

the TH sound you'll have to practice your muscle memory just by speaking a bunch of words until you put the right tongue pressure on your teeth. The /t/ and /d/sounds of the past tenses it's very simple. When a word ends in a voice sound it has a /d/ sounded past tense, like "Paved". When the word ends in a vowel or diphthong it also sound like /d/ like Employed that's because english has this kind of rhythm. If a word is ends in an unvoiced sound like "Pick", it's pronounced with the /t/ sound when in past tense. "PickT". The same rule applies for /z/ and /s/ sound when a word is in its plural form, for example, the word "is" is pronounced 'Iz", "sees" is pronounced "Seez"

I am learning North America English and My boyfriend is British. Some of the languages in India doesn't use "v", so one of the reasons why some words sound different with an Indian accent is because some letters does not exist at all! it is very interesting.. I practiced pronouncing "vulnerable" for 2 days to get it right..

Hindi first consonant word is "Ka" and second is "kha". We speak the first word slightly and stress on the second word. In English, you don't have the second word. You stress on the first word "ka". Generally, I don't see anything in our language that doesn't fit in English language.. Tagalog words were read and pronounced the way it is written. Maybe the problem I would say is the numbers of dialects and different accents we have.. There is a strong , hard , soft and loving accents here depending on what places in the Philippines you are. I love the loving accent cuz even when they were shouting and fighting , they sounded calm and loving. Filipinos can adapt to different International accents too. They can speak with Australian, British, Indian, American or Korean accents or anywhere with ease depending where he is . Would you like to learn tagalog in the future Mark? in Shona, Zimbabwean language, we don't have L, Q and X . I find when L is at the end of a word I tend to omit it altogether. For instance, the word shovel, would sound like I'm saying shovow. Also the language is spoken at a very fast rate, if you try to speak slowly like English it loses its meaning. one word can be a complete sentence eg Wakandishungurudza (they made me frustrated ). For me it is impossible to pronounce a phrase " are you ready to order" (I'm a native Russian) all these R and O. I've been studying english for years, can understand everything, can hear and guess dialects, but when it comes to actual speaking can say nothing... Sad. Russian has clusters as well, but DR and TR sounds are tough. and somehow A and E sounds (like PEN/PAN. BAD/BED) same for bus and boss. The sound TH does't exist at russian. We always pronounse thought sound like Z. When you hear: "Zis is good!" - This is russians :)

There are different sounds of TH . Example : THIS, THAT is like D as Dear and in thought is Z . I am not a teacher , I am a student. I know russians than speak Spanish so I know they can do it .
