Hi Jack. It's good to see another of your videos again. Even though I have difficulties with many sounds in English, one of the most difficult to me is, as you explain here, the difference between "van & ban" you know that as a Spanish speaker these sounds turn to be hard to do for us because we find them quite similar. I hope it makes sense what I am saying. I am 100 % sure that most Spanish speakers have also the same issue.

the thing is that there is no Standart pronunciation in English speaking countries, for example people on the east coast speak differently than those on the West coast of the United States. I m sure likewise in the UK too. in advanced teaching courses, we are not dwelling on pronunciation as much as before though. 😁

I am sure that the learner needs to develop an inteligible pronunciation due to the varieties of English there are around the world. That is why, I think that the most important thing is focused on the production of an accurate pronunciation to be understood by the interlocutor. To do this, it is important to prectise every day in order to achieve this goal which is very determinat when English is the language meta.

One more thing. In my language for example there is no "th" sound, so when you say listen to the difference, I can't even hear any difference at all. In English there are some sound that don't exist in other languages so for someone who is not native it is hard to differentiate those sounds even when listening. So you are right, you should explain to people where to put tongue and stuff. But even that is hard to understand and reproduce, you have to be patient with foreigners. Because again, I can't even hear myself when I am making a mistake, it all sound exactly the same for me. Same in German. Many people who even live in Germany swear there are no difference in any of the sounds the Germans make. But there MANY. We just can even hear these differences. But the Germans do hear them! Overall that advice with doing a comparison on your self... I don't think this can work, honestly. I need a native person to help me.
