We partnered with @vrbo to share a classic recipe for #AAPIHeritageMonth!
Steamed Fish - I have so many memories eating this with my family. It’s usually one of the centerpieces of my dad’s famous 12-course feasts, especially during big holidays like Lunar New Year.
As far as centerpiece dishes go, Steamed Fish is much, much easier to prepare than something like roasted turkey or chicken. It only takes 30 minutes, which also makes it a great option for cooking dinner on vacation!

This reminds me of my Popo making dinner for the whole family on Sundays when I was little! It was always my favourite and I’ve struggled to find a recipe that is so similar to hers. I wish I had asked for her recipes before it was too late, so watching your dad and learning his recipes is amazing and feels so familiar. Thank you for sharing all these Cantonese gems!

Pro tip my fishmonger taught me, if you’re cooking for yourself or it’s a night where presentation doesn’t matter, steam the fish in a foil packet. This works for whole fish as well as fillets. Make sure to leave air pocket for fish to steam thoroughly. Best thing is you can just serve it in the foil, fold the the edges back at the table and then when you’re finished you can bin the whole thing without needing to scrub the plate. Sometimes steaming fish can leave the fish skin stuck to the bottom and is a hassle to wash. Oh and stuffing the herbs inside the fish cavity as well as top and bottom can give it even more flavour.

@@LlednarHugh Yes, if done right the fish is perfectly soft, but still has a little bit of bite to it, the sauce is just addictive, and you can still taste the subtle flavors in the fish. For me you know it's good when you can use spoons to cut and lift the flesh off perfectly and the bone as well without anything clinging on, but it's also not falling apart.

My late grandmother recipe is you put gingers lemon onion and lemongrass inside of the fish stomach. And then put sliced chilli inside the pot along with fish. For the sauce we use oyster sauce lemon juice sesame oil and fish sauce and pour some warm water to it. To enhance the flavour you can put fermented(i think i spell this right) soy bean around the pot. And then steam it for 30 minutes or until it fully cooked.
