A small place I used to go to, had something friends called Vitamin Soup. It was made for frequent customers and had Lotus root, amongst other vegetables and things I didn't recognize. Very flavorful, but light..... not sure if you know what I'm talking about? The other thing I love there was salt and pepper pork.

I can't even explain how much I love this channel. I lost my grandmother recently and as an international student in the UK, these videos give me a feeling of home... It feels like a parent teaching me how to cook. I especially like the sit-down mealtimes and I put it on in the background and it just transports me back home listening to the adults chatting 🥺 Thank you for this channel...

Your poor son, I'm sure he wishes he can eat all the delicious food that his Yeh Yeh cooks for everyone! On another note, I found this channel on Subtle Canto Traits, and as a 1st gen ABC trying to learn more about my culture and cook my favorite foods growing up, this channel truly is amazing. It makes me a little emotional just watching these videos and seeing how you are preserving these family traditions for your son hits home for me as I envision how I want to pass on the same traditions to my future children with my fiance. I also really appreciate the subtitles! It helps me to keep up with the little Cantonese that I know and hopefully I can get better at it the more I watch these videos. Thanks for all your hard work!

I made this for CNY 2023. It was so delicious even the kids who didn’t like turnip ate it. The instructions was super simple. The tough part was mixing the flour in. Good arm workout though. I also made the CNY cake, 年糕. It was more popular for the older folks and red bean lovers. 年糕 was a first time for me to make. It was the easiest cake batter ever. I will treasure these 2 recipes forever. Thank you Mr. Lau!

For me, they represent my whole upbringing. We only spoke Cantonese in the house and knew other Cantonese families, but that past is gradually going away for me, as I'm more Americanized but still wish to retain my Canto-side. These videos are like a record of that culture I grew up in, and a way for me to reconnect.

My ex-wife, who is from Guongzhou, made this, but she used Chinese white radishes instead of turnips. It was delicious. Now I know how she did it. Edit: I got to the end of the video and maybe what she used was daikon radish.

It's originally used using Chinese turnip though. They're similar in shape and texture, albeit Chinese turnip grows better in different climates than daikon.

I just made a dim sum meal for my family and friends: My son is adopted from Korea & he HATES turkey, even though he arrived here at 4 mos old. Soooo I make different international meals for him. Last Christmas was a Mexican feast with tamales, his Arrival Day this year was Hawaiian food, and for the dim sum meal, I used Daddy Lau’s Lo Mai Gai (which my son loves and which was both our favorite dish), turnip cake and Singapore noodle recipes. We also had guodze, chilled shrimp, miso marinated cod, and several different kinds of homemade pickles. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful family recipes with us and keep them coming for more non-turkey feasts!

I’ve made this twice now and it is truly the most delicious turnip cake I’ve ever had - so much better than any I’ve had in restaurants! The recipe is perfect. The The hardest thing is the wait until cool enough to cut. It is a really comforting dish and the amount in this recipe is enough to freeze some portions. I froze slices separated by non-stick paper so I can take out as many slices as I want which will be fried. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t had turnip cake to try this. It’s so more-ish.

Hello, I'm a viewer from Japan. I've tried making wontons and siu mai from your channel's recipes in the past, and they turned out really delicious. Recently, I attempted to make turnip cake but it was a failure. The turnip cake I made was very watery and couldn't hold its shape at all. Initially, I thought I didn't steam it long enough, so I steamed it for 2 hours. Later, I even tried using a pressure cooker but to no avail. I looked up other recipes, but the turnip cakes I made were still very runny, almost like a paste. That was until I found a formula for turnip cake. The formula is: 4 times the flour equals the weight of the turnip plus the weight of the water. (Since the density of water is 1, 100g of water equals 100ml.) The best ratio is water being 1.5 to 2 times the flour, which you can adjust according to personal preference. With this formula, I finally made a satisfying turnip cake. I think it's because I used daikon, which is juicier than turnips, so it was necessary to recalculate the proportions using the formula. I hope this can help viewers who have the same problem as I did.

One might be able to use chayote / christophene / xuxu / choko as a substitute. It also has a mild and quite neutral taste like Chinese turnip. Here in Malaysia, we sometimes see this vegetable julienned and stir-fried with dried shrimps and that makes a great veggie dish.

Just made it yesterday: soooo successful as I am having the fried gao for breakfast now. The local Asian market ran out of rice flour so I didn’t have enough and mixed with corn starch (80 g) + rice flour (100 g) and same amount of water as the recipe. I didn’t put the whole flour mixture in because my lo bak mixture didn’t absorb as much liquid. I really like how your dad provided the details describing the mixture so I adjusted mine accordingly. Happy 🐯 CNY to your family. This video is fun to watch with the sleeping baby “overnight”. 👍

If you can't get chinese daikon turnip, you can use japanese daikon BUT be sure to cook it with chinese brown sugar slices to balance the bitterness. Same goes with the korean daikon which is short but plump and greenish

YASSSSS!!! This is one of my favourite dishes of all time! I hope using a Korean lo bak is going to be okay as that's all I can get living in Korea...! Korean turnips look closer to the Chinese turnips (fatter in the middle) and they don't taste bitter.
