I really wanna see where Playmates takes this. Definitely want them to emulate the ankle articulation of the MOTU Origins stuff and ditch the “orange peel” texture. Out of all the Mikey figs I have, I might like these chuks the most. I like the color, the chain, and the size/scale. The only thing that keeps me from using it with others is color matching. The orange is super vibrant, so it stands out too much with other figs.

Hatter, a quick thought I had regarding the skin texture while watching this video- I heard in an interview with the guy from Varner Studios (Steve Varner, I think?), which is the company that's been designing the Playmates TMNT line from the very beginning, that he suggested to the company they "sandblast" the figures in the 2012 line to give them texture. He said they either stopped doing this early on or that they never adopted it, can't remember exactly. I was just thinking that maybe they took that note from back then & applied it (or something similar) to these figures, or perhaps it was even suggested as a way to "enhance" these during the design phase. I'm not sure if he's still an active designer within the company, but I do know that Varner Studios still actively works on the Playmates TMNT stuff, as they even designed the Mutant Mayhem line. Idk, just something that popped into my head while you were discussing the texture.

Problem is playmates is not transparent enough with the fans for us to be wholly invested. If they could just speak about their plan and future goals for a line. If I knew they were invested in keeping the line going and accept consumer criticism then I would be wholly invested. But right now it’s just “we’ll see”

I’m watching closely because the Power Ranger line is dead under Hasbro right now. Playmates will be moving forward with the brand this year and I’m hoping we get some good stuff outside of MMPR. Yes, we’ll see plenty from the first season, but Hasbro didn’t give us massive characters like Quantum Ranger.

the texture reminds me of some sort of bad acne or some sort of fungus that makes me just wanna scratch it off with my fingernails. sends shivers down my spine. what were they thinking, people use cream to get rid of acne/fungus/scabs etc. But playmates brings it back onto a toy, so gross. i wont ever get this figure unless they fix that issue.

Everyone's opinion is valid. I'm not a fan of the TMNT Mutant Mayhem stuff but others do. It's okay. There's TMNT for everyone! Having said that, I do like these alot. The skin to me isn't an issue as I feel like it's similar to the ORIGINAL TMNT Playmates movie star line. The original release had a textured and made of a soft rubber. This felt sim. I agree tho about the ankles. The ankles are horrid and more or less pointless and need to be able to bend

I think they could have added/corrected the articulation & charged $20 instead of $15 & more people would have been satisfied with these. The skin texture turned me off in photos, but I honestly didn't mind it once I saw them up close. The bigger miss for me was them mixing up a couple of the faces, but I still bought them. I do love the idea of it all. With that said, anything over $20 & I think they start to tip the scales in the other direction of being too expensive. That Last Ronin they did in similar style initially released at $30, and while it had more paint apps, weapons & accessories included, I think they were trying to gouge the "adult collector" at that price. It being a Previews Exclusive & them throwing in a black & white chase variant points to that as well, but did it work? The basic version of that figure could be had for half the price after a time, and even the chase has come down by quite a bit. I'm not sure that Playmates really knows much about the adult collector market, but they do seem to know we often trade in nostalgia & FOMO, especially when it comes to the Toitles.

As an adult buying 'kids toys,' I rely on youtube creators such as yourself -for- your opinion. You have a lot of hands on experience with multiple lines of 'toys,' and each of us 'collectors' do it in certain ways. Some of them buy the figures to keep pristine, new in box, unopened, and well cared for to maximize their value as the years progress, others want just the figure and a key component or two for display purposes, even diorama purposes... Me, I like to make dioramas, as well as re-paint the figures, so, for me, it's more important that they have good articulation, nice details, and fun accessories. I also wont spend this kind of money on figures -without- a review from people just like you, so "Thanks!" for exactly what you do!! Bonus question answer: I would prefer a smooth skin and hinged ankle for diorama purposes. The original 90's toon did not portray textured skin, it was very basic animation, meant to sell the toys. So! Talk your shit, I'm here for a friends perspective, not a corporate sponsored endorsement!

Great critique, it was that nasty orange peel texture that kept me from buying these figures, the articulation is not that big of a deal to me, pretty much any articulation is an improvement over what they were. But that skin was the deal breaker for me. However, I absolutely loved your daughter’s review of the Storm Collectibles Zangief. She gave an honest review of the figure not worried at all what the comment section would have to say. Bring on more daughter of mad hatter reviews!!

Playmates had the perfect body mold with the Last Ronin figure they released. They just had to use that as the base and it would have been fantastic. Why did they take this route instead? They even articulated the first sketch turtles the right way! I don't get it.

For kids trying to collect- Good luck finding the damn things! This line is exclusive to one store, and despite my local Wal-Mart having plenty of TMNT stuff, I've never seen a single one in person. I was willing to overlook the pock-marked skin and crappy ankles, but they're never in stock, and I'm not paying ebay scalper prices. But I'm sure the 4-10 year olds will definitely have the patience for dealing with that.

These Playmates remastered toys are kids toys but aimed towards to collectors, same as the first sketch Turtles from Playmates. the Mutant Mayhem line is more aimed towards kids then anything else.

For me, i have tmnt fatigue with all the figures ibsee in store. Plus my market is just trash when it comes to stock variety.

Playmates really needs to just look at what Super7 did. Just keep the original style skin textures (for all characters), put that ankle rocker in there, and go beyond the main standard characters (Scratch, Monty, Wyrm, so many possibilities!). I think the main problem with Playmates though is the disconnect with property itself. Back in the day, alot of the Mirage writers & artists (Steve Lavinge, Ryan Brown, and others) all helped contribute to toy designs and card bios. Now that Mirage is no longer in existence, it seems that they have no idea except to recycle the same 10 characters. Just my two cents.

As someone who loved the original line as a kid, I can say these new remastered figs were a let down. I waited patiently and finally got all 4 of them on the Walmart app, and every single one of them has crooked noses, like they were glued on wrong. Plus, the articulation doesn’t mean a whole lot when it’s so limited that they end up being posed in the same pre-posed positions of the originals so they end up not looking much different at all (unlike the wonderful Origins figs). I loved Playmates’ Last Ronin figure, but by comparison, these were a let down and I’m out. I’ll stick with their classic re-releases.

another point that's important here: there are people like yourself (and me) that are happy to pay real money for higher end figures, but we're in the minority. There are a lot of people who would like to hit that nostalgia itch but definitely can't or won't invest $40+ for a figure. There are probably a lot of people like that and this is for them, mainly. But they could be better! It's ok to point out that they could be better. We now know that figures can be better because of Jada (and to a lesser extent whoever is making those sonic figures. Jakks?). So it's ok to ask that they be better!

I'm to far down the joy toy line to get these plus my Walmart sucks at stocking items. I think this line is going to go far since they are coming out with a last Ronin Raph and you know they have to do the other brothers. I'm not invested in these figures at all, but just from an outsider perspective, the MOTU Origins line was mostly just bringing those vintage toys into a more modern setting, vintage scaling with more modern articulation, but not really trying to reinvent the wheel, doesn't stray too far from the vintage figures. Where this TMNT Remastered line fails is the articulation isn't modernized enough, like yeah, basic swivel ankles just doesn't cut it for 2024/2025, and the addition of the skin texture makes it stray too far from the vintage figures. Like, it should have just been those vintage designs, with the Origins articulation setup, no weird textures, no major derivations from the vintage figures.

Playmates decided to not give them modern articulation, while improved articulation seemed like the whole point of the redo. The previous Last Ronin and upcoming Last Ronin Raph articulation is exactly what could’ve been. With all that in mind, I still bought them haha. They’re fun, but disappointing
