This song is a CLASSIC. Madness is loved all over the world. There are a lot more songs to dive into!
@robotronrichardКүн бұрын
Thanks Flint for requesting this classic! An AMAZING tune! And L33, now like me you will have to fight the urge to say "in the middle of our street" anytime someone uses the phrase "Our House" in a sentence and then have the song stuck in you head for days afterwards. It's absolute MADNESS! ☮❤🎶

It Must Be A Love is a nice track they did. It’s a cover, so it might be interesting to do a comparison to the original by Labi Siffre.

Madness were a great band with multiple hits over several years. It's only looking back that you realise how much of a fixture they were in the charts at the time - and for good reason. I'd say this is one of their best. PS: Keep telling you, Lee, it's Eye-vor Novello not Ee-vor. Don't make me come round to your house!

3:44 the guy's wearing a gray, collarless Beatle suit from '63 and a Beatle wig. The same suit the Beatles are wearing in the cut-away callback in the Hello Goodbye video. Oh wait. That's his real hair.

Two pop culture references...A Verizon Christmas commercial from 2010 mashed-up Our House with Jingle Bells. And the Queen's Diamond Jubilee of 2012 had Madness perform on top of Buckingham Palace with a light show projection. They're both here. Check it out.

L33, you absolutely have to listen to Driving in my car, The Prince, Night Boat to Cairo, Embarrassed among other great songs (even if in your own time). You will not regret doing it. As for Our House, it was a staple in Portuguese radio stations. Even the shops played this non stop in 1982 in downtown Lisbon.

Check out House of Fun. Night Boat to Cairo and Baggy Trousers. More brilliant music and videos. Madness are from Camden Town in North West London. I think a lot of their videos were shot in and around that area.

You've probably heard it because it was a big hit (Top 10) in the US (their only one).
@andyyoung946311 сағат бұрын
A lot will ask you to do Baggy Trousers, House of Fun and It Must Be Love and they are all good songs. I'd suggest, however, that you start with their earlier stuff and work through to see how they changed. You already pointed out how different this is to One Step Beyond. I'd say go for The Prince and Night Boat To Cairo next. Also, do check out The Specials...Too Much Too Young for more of that UK 2 Tone ska sound.

I've really liked Madness ever since I found out about them on a trip abroad in the 80's, since they were all but unheard of here in the states back then unless you were a devotee of Brit pop and rock, and got a bunch of my friends to like them too. Used to blast their hits in my dorm room all the time. But, I've never really cared much for Our House, and think that of all their hits, it's easily their weakest one, too safe and conventional to be very interesting. I much prefer songs like One Step Beyond, Baggy Trousers and Night Boat to Cairo (love that foghorn!). Not sure why they didn't get as much airplay in the US as Our House. It's sort of as if the only Beatles song that succeeded in the US was Tell Me Why or Yellow Submarine. You should react to one of their better hits. They were an important part of the British Ska and Reggae revival of the late 70's to mid-80's, along with the Police, UB40 and the Specials.

Another great example of how the 80s music absolutely ruined rock ‘n’ roll
@spongo22 сағат бұрын
Not really sure how a well constructed pop song with a catchy chorus "ruined rock 'n' roll". Isn't that pretty much how the music industry always was since the advent of rock 'n' roll in the 50's? Yes, the 80's were horribly commercial and the music was overproduced. But rock 'n' roll is strong enough to survive. More likely the elimination of music programs in schools in favor of teaching to the test and the rise of producer-driven pop and hip hop helped hasten an end to rock 'n' roll's domination.
