Madness Video Locations

We went to London and filmed a few locations from Madness music videos made in the late 70's and 80's so you can compare then and now and we have managed to get some really good footage ENJOY!

Excellent video. The actual Escapades used in the House Of Fun video was on Camden High St just gobbling distance from the start of Embarrassment but it was closed down before it moved up to Chalk Farm. It's now a mobile phone shop. I did write to Camden Council asking them to make sure a chemist was put in its place so that the immortal line "this is a chemist not a joke shop" could still stand! They never got back to me tho! The swines!!!

Wings of a dove was filmed at an airfield near Camberley. Uncle Sam street scene was in Isleworth. Sun & the rain was south Moulton street. Our house was Stephenson street in Willesden. I know plenty more as well.

The beginning of 'Baggy Trousers' looks like Parliament Hill. I thought the beginning of 'House of Fun' was filmed on an estate near Liverpool Rd and Highbury Corner but there are plenty of similar looking estates. Where exactly is it?

Promises promises is alright but definitely not a single. I would have gone for Day on the town or Mrs Hutchinson over Shut up, Tomorrow’s Dream is a stand out track, but not single material.

I agree. Tomorrow's Dream and Opium Eaters. Madness could have got away with Tomorrow's Dream at that time. No one took them seriously as lyricists. And if they can release Los Palmas 7, they can definitely release Opium Eaters. Promises Promises! There is no accounting for taste, I agree

Hi Jeremy, nice work with the Madness locations, though I wonder if you know where the Shut Up policeman chase happened? It's the building with the tyres in front that I am interested in, because I believe it was also used by The Kinks in a robber chase scene in their 1965 promo video for Dead End Street. Part of that video was filmed in Little Green Street near where House of Fun started. Go right to the end of the Kinks video to see the building I mean. Neil

Acha Red Bed & breakfast man was filmed in the Clarendon pub on Hammersmith broadway. It was demolished in 1988.

Could you double check your location for the Grey Day shop window? I think the spot was really at (or near) what is now a McDonalds and not BK - you can see Bedford House and the Nationwide directly across the road in the video and the Nationwide is still there. From the looks of it, they were in a previous, old Bowman's building on the site where there is now a more modern replacement...hence the room they stood in is no more. Any locals can put me right. Found your video very interesting. Thanks

According to the boys themselves, it was in what was (recently) the Waterstones, which was a few doors down from the Burger King, in the same overall building. That's all currently boarded up.

@@MarcusJayMusic I watched that clip and heard them say Waterstones - I know they were there !! but I think they're wrong - it's definitely filmed further down the road at a site level with what is now a McDonalds. I suspect the original room they filmed in has been knocked down but not sure about that.

@@Kemnaygeography Yeah I acknowledge they could be mistaken. I believe the overall building is pretty old, the shop fronts are definitely modern. I'll have a proper look at the site of the mcdonalds next week. Thanks!

@@MarcusJayMusic looking at the brickwork in the upper storeys of that block of buildings now, it looks post 1981 - my guess is that there was an older building there at the time of the video, much like the Bowmans one next to it. That current block looks 90s to me. Not sure - good luck

@@Kemnaygeography ah yes, I see now. The Burger King/Poundland/Waterstones (latter two now gone) is the original building. The one that houses the McDonalds is definitely all new. I wonder if the creator of the video could weigh in on where they got the information that it was the Burger King?
