I think what impressed me most about this scene, was the fact that Sayaka was sympathetic of Homura, rather than hostile. It shows how much she matured, she doesn’t have the black and white mentality that she once had. One of the very things that held Sayaka back, was her mentality, her way of thinking. So we really see Sayaka at her best in this movie.

Yall I LOVE Sayaka so much in this scene. She's playful, knowledgeable and FIERCERLY confident. And this unnerves Homura SO DAMN MUCH!! She never took Sayaka for a worthy opponent. In the original series Homura could agitate Sayaka by just existing while Homura herself just stayed aloof and above her. But here Sayaka teases her, saying that "if she stopped to think for a second she'd have figured that out", makes a very daring move by stopping her attempt use her shield, and challenges her every thought. Sayaka's her equal, or is even above her. She radiates power and confidence in the way she carries herself. And the worst thing of all maybe, is that Sayaka doesn't hate her. She's actually sympathetic, mockingly playful, but never, ever malicious. And all of these combined throw Homura for a loop completely.

I often see Sayaka get a lot of backlash because of this scene because she knew the whole time that Homura was a witch and she should have just told her, but what they don't understand is that just telling her outright would best case scenario have Homura just deny it and brush it off as Trademark Sayaka assholery, or worst case scenario, Homura transforms into a witch instantaneously at this realization and the stress of such a sudden upset in the delicate balance of her labyrinth would cause the entire labyrinth to straight up collapse. what she's actually doing is trying to clue Homura into the fact that she's a witch by sympathizing in hopes of weakening Homuras witch based hatred, and trying to walk her through each possible witch, which is interrupted by Homura's first attempt to stop time right as she's about to bring up the possibility of Homura being the witch. If Homura hadn't pulled out her shield to stop time when she did at 1:28, sayaka would have pointed out how the unorthodox nature of the labyrinth being made to maintain a status quo rather than lure victims lined up accurately to how everything about Homura revolves around Madoka's safety and the maintenance of a specific dynamic between Homura and Madoka and the rest of the group.

Sayaka’s always been interesting to me. She’s presented as this typical “genki-girl”, but she’s probably one of the most intelligent and contemplative members of the groups. There are little hints early in the series that she’s really good at reading people and thinks pretty deeply about the situation she’s in, and then, when she _does_ do something stupid, she has the maturity to quickly realize almost entirely on her own that everything that happened to her was a consequence of her own actions, that her inability to confess to Kyousuke is why they’re not together, not because she was screwed over by Hitomi, or even Kyuubey. A light push from Kyoko and some contemplation on her part was all she needed to realize that her totally selfless worldview simply wasn’t sustainable. It’s so interesting to me how much depth Sayaka had when most girls of her archetype are usually the most bland, generic, and most paper-thin of their respective casts.

I do think she’s very intelligent and introspective, but her righteous nature blinds her perception at times. For instance, she just assumes that Homura let Mami die because she only stopped Charlotte after her death, even though Homura was restrained by Mami’s ribbons and couldn’t help. Granted, Madoka is partially to blame since she was there when Homura was restrained and could’ve explained in more depth to Sayaka than just “that’s not it,” but I still blame Sayaka for jumping to conclusions without having the full picture. She also misunderstood Kyoko but she became more understanding after she let Kyoko explain her reasoning.

I just absolutely adore Sayaka in the movie because she matches what Kyubey said about witches: that they're the mature form of magical girls. Sayaka in the movie has matured a lot, from letting go of Kyosuke to what she tells Homura here. she's also grown stronger. and she reminds me of the doppels from Magia Record a bit. Sayaka is no longer just a girl here, she's becoming a woman.

I feel almost like if there was a way to somehow “stop someone from becoming a witch” permanently it would be them maturing in some way or facing their problems. It could also be proven by how Kyubey choose teenage and pre teen girls mostly because at that age kids go through a lot of change and emotional development. Basically Persona 4 is what would happen if Madoka Magica had a good ending. If u over come ur problems u don’t die :D

What I get from this scene -and Rebellion in general- is that Homura is not all that powerful when the other girls know what her power is. During the OAV series, Homura was a mystery the whole time up until the end, and I remember thinking to myself she was clearly the most powerful of the bunch (save for Madoka). But Rebellion shook it up a bit. We see Mami able to fight Homura's time-stop by holding her with a ribbon. We also see a Sayaka (who is more versed in her own powers) stop Homura from using her ability with her sword, then has a nice little quip.. I LOVED that part. Sayaka definitely deserved some redemption after what happened to her in the series.

The problem is that Homura always worked alone, not trusting anybody, fighting exactly the same enemies over and over again. This means that she could only grow in her abilities to a certain point, and after that she plateaued. The other girls have been trying to live and grow, but Homura is stuck on a single thing that she cannot change, and it holds her back drastically. The arguments that Homura did what she did to help Madoka give me pause, because it's not what Madoka wants. Homura is taking away her friend's freedom to protect her, and that sounds like an abusive relationship to me. Not that this makes Homura a terrible person, because her heart is in the right place, but good people often do terrible things with the best of intentions out of despair or fear. It also doesn't help that having everybody disbelieve you when you know you're right can easily lead you into believing that those people are stupid (like discussing politics, am I right? XP). This movie makes me wonder how hard Homura actually tried to get the other girls on her side in the repeating timeline. Don't get me wrong--she's my favorite character because she's the most complex and I relate to her the most (I think Rebellion is an excellent showcase of the effects depression has on somebody's mind)--but she's proud, analytical, and an introvert. Sometimes that combination can make you give up on others helping you when there's still a way to clear up the misunderstanding. And I'm speaking from experience here.

Nice that she got positive character development in this after the series broke her (Sayaka: happy heroine who wants to do the right thing -> depressed psycho -> matures and is Madoka's loyal friend. Because of all these different sides to her character, Sayaka just might be my favourite!!!!! :D

Something to notice about Sayaka people seem to not realize is that she refers to Charlotte as a “she.” Throughout the original series, they referred to Witches as an “it,” as if they were never human. Here, you can see she acknowledges that the Witches are people in a way, another self of themselves, rather than just another monster to put down.
@Hattakiri8 жыл бұрын
Sayaka became more clever and more courageous. She experienced death itself, but, and this is the critical aspect, Madoka showed her what happened in the former timelines, showed her what Kyoko did for her for instance. Therefore: Sayaka became THANKFUL!! Now she wanna be strong envough to protect Kyoko (we know that quote, don't we!) - like Bebe/Charlotte, who too wanna help Mami now! And all of the former witches met (with) each other in Madokami's "Hereafter" Thus: Most necessarily Sayaka gets veery pissed when Homura still attemps to kill witches.... BUT: Madoka did this in order to get as many help as possible, for she knew: A fully evolved Homura would be too much even for her!! (Which she of course forgot as soon as she was literally under the seal) AND HOMURA STARTS REALIZING THIS RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW!! Sayaka (alledgedly) seems to be very fine with "witchery" - which makes Homura think that someone, maybe even MADOKA HERSELF, BRAINWASHED THEM!! Of course Homura will regret those thoughts and feels abominably after the flower field scene, that will most literally set the ball rolling... Therefore: As soon as QB's seal is erased and both Homura's abilities and knowledge are fully evolved........well, y'know the result. So THIS is the true reason why this scene is so incredibly mighty. Of course: The art style, the stage setting, the voice acting, the music - all enormous, all epochal. But at the end of the day; only when a story is well done, it will make history, like Maddy Magic did from the first f** day on air.

For some reason, Sayaka sounds really different in this scene, she seems more composed and mature than she did any other time in the anime. I like it. sorakairi1993 Sorry for the late reply but it's an allusion to the original tale of the little mermaid by hans christian andersen. Sayaka's final witch form is a mermaid which can be summoned by water, as seen here and in other places by blood which has water (stabbing herself). Also, in the little mermaid, after she does not earn her love's heart she turns into sea form and joins the daughters of the air/goes to heaven. Sayaka draws close parallels to this when she dies before becoming a witch, which means she has to disappear and then joins the law of cycles ^^ The original little mermaid (which inspired the disney one- which I'm not really a fan of because it doesn't do it proper justice) is a beautiful tale worth looking into. There are a lot of hidden allusions in puella magi which I can't name. Hope that clears it up!
@zinzolin149 жыл бұрын
Rachel Mongie Thanks for the reply! I already knew of Sayaka's story and struggle having relations with the story of the original Little Mermaid. I still think Sayaka still kinda got the short end of the stick in the end, but still better than becoming a witch. What I was referring to the shapes the ripples were forming, not exactly the water itself. I wasn't sure if they're suppose to create an image, but if what you stated was the connection, then I guess I'm just over thinking it :p

I agree with what everyone said about how mature sayaka is that she's homura's equal or even more mentally, how someone pointed out the sky changed since she's using Madoka's power to call Oktavia. But I also liked her expression when homura kicked her, just like Bebe mentioned, 2 of them were sent besides Madoka since they we're prepared that 1 of them would get hurt or even worse die, but even if they expect the unexpected Sayaka was still surprised how physically strong homura was just like her fight with Mami, when Homura quickly kicked her gun that made her topple backward, maybe because it isn't her real body and she is already a witch, so there's most likely a magical and physical boost

Sarah Williams fucking slays this, you really need to be able to act to pull Sayaka off and hooo boi can she act. I applaud her, she captured the feeling of the scene perfectly, you can pretty much hear the things going through Sayaka's mind in this, yet she still remains mysterious and as badass as Rebellion Sayaka should be. Heck, it's almost as good as KitaEri's original lines (and that's saying a lot, considering Eri happens to be my fave VA of all time lol). Christina Vee did a good job continuing the dialogue exchange to but dayum that expression in Sayaka. Of the complex relationships between the individual members of the Holy Quintet, the relationship between Sayaka and Homura has always been the least harmonious. They have that energy of respect-because-of-mutual-friends thing, but genuinely Sayaka always seemed to view Homura as aloof, unfeeling, and untrustworthy, and Homura in turn views Sayaka as a naive and brash individual who's always first to fall. That this relationship has evolved here, particularly on Sayaka's side, is really interesting to see. Now that Sayaka knows more, and Homura's troubled soul is all the more obvious to her, she becomes much kinder, retaining an obvious disapproval of certain aspects of Homura's personality, but always tackling it in a constructive way. What utterly brilliant character development, in as much as it still sticks to her roots. Among this is Sayaka subtly reminding a veteran self-loather to be kind to herself, urging her to see the good of the one who formed the labyrinth before Homura realizes its her, reflected later in the movie when she reminds the others that, no matter how horrible Homulilly looks, she's the one who's suffering. And though Homura, less in the know, isn't quite as keen to put aside old grudges, she does acknowledge Sayaka has more depth than perhaps she first realizes, and is seeing for the first time why Madoka, Mami, and Kyoko all respect her the way they do. This continues at the end of the movie too, when Homura consents to confront her about what she did, defend her actions, and the worst she does to Sayaka is erase her memories (a very light fate considering what she's implied to have done to Kyubey) and even tells her that she gets the chance to live a normal life again, being able to say good morning to Hitomi and Kyouske, in an ordinary context without a hint of resentment. For as self-assurred as she is in her actions, Homura has still retained a small amount of understanding towards others. FUCK ME, THIS SERIES IS SO FUCKING GOOD...

I know she meant to help Homura... but there's a reason why Homura didn't want to be saved. Granted, the new world is an opportunity for the girls to actually solve their problems. But I know what she did was still possessive. And the reason she followed that route was because she received validation from Sayaka and heard Madoka's true feelings.

Homura is flawed, and Sayaka sure did the right thing in this scene. But neither of them is perfect. Homura never took Sayaka for a worthy opponent, not because of her power, but because of her immaturity and naiveness, and dichotomous thinking. In the original series, she claimed all other magical girls are competing for grief seeds, and only Mami and she were fighting for justice, which was completely mistaken and showed Sayaka's immaturity and naiveness. You can see originally Homura had wanted to work within the team, but it didn't work well between Sayaka and her. She was always dragging down the team without consciousness, the whole witch thing, and the 'are you turning us against each other' thing. People naturally hate people who are against them, which is true for both of the two characters. and was always against anything Homura said or did even if Homura did save her twice (fetching her soul gem thrown away by Madoka and stopping the fight with Kyoko) for whatever reason. Remember in episode 10 how Sayaka questioned Homura when she was revealing the truth and said she wouldn't take her as a teammate? That hurts, especially for someone introverted like Homura. Even in the first episode of Magia Record season 2, she is always criticizing her (which of course is SHAFT's design). If it was me, I wouldn't be nice to someone who is hostile to me, either. Not to mention Homura went through it a whole lot of times. We are not saints anyway. Neither is Sayaka.
