I saw this on the opening night in London, 25th September 1993. The stomping down the runway between Erotica and Fever is too gorgeous. I never grow tired of watching it. My ticket cost £25. Fast forward 30 yrs and I’ve just paid £400 for this summers show. Love seeing you get emotional watching her too.

She actually performed 7 of Erotica's 13 songs, which is quite a lot. It's a shame she left off Bad Girl though, I think it was because it's a difficult song to sing every night with all those high notes. There's also Justify my Love, which was a new song that hadn't been performed live before. This is my favorite tour along with 2001's Drowned World Tour. The amount of artistry put into the show is insane, her vocals are flawless and her energy is infectious. And you can tell how much fun she's having here. Fun fact: Bye Bye Baby was released as a single in Australia, and the live music video was taken from the show.

My favourite Madonna tour ❤ I was too young to go and see it 😢 But I remember watching this on repeat when it came out. Her tours are always so seamless due to the crazy amount of rehearsal time she puts in. She was majorly into running around this tour and would do a long run and then head to rehearsals… the woman is a machine!! I’m gutted we have never had “Bad Girl” but if her instagram post has any truth in it, we may be getting it on the Greatest Hits tour ❤ As much as I love her, I’m not sure how vocally she will sound singing it as it’s such a hard song to sing… but I’m certain she will pull it out of the bag! Happy Birthday Ryan 🎉

Why is it a hard song? It isn’t like she’s covering someone else’s song, it’s her song, in her key. Ok she might be a lot older but even so I’m sure it might be modernised so she doesn’t have to sing it much. A lot of her songs are mixed differently for her shows.

Love Girlie Show Tour. Madonna's vocals were so much stronger and she smiled so much thoroughly enjoying herself. It took a month to finalize all of the choreography for Vogue. The number was so intricate and complex that they struggled with finding an ending. Christopher would work on it then take a break to choreograph other songs until finally it was complete.

I saw this show in Paris. I was 17, and it was my first Madonna concert. The atmosphere at Bercy was insane. There was no designated seating, only sections, and so we lined up for hours with floor tickets and when the gates opened, we ran in a frenzy and got amazingly close to the stage! The show was a slow burn. Madonna was spectacular, and was in fine form vocally. The Pierrot clown represents the disenfranchised, and has been a part of visual artistry for centuries. Unfortunately, classicism of any kind has been forgotten in this nightmarish age of disregard for history and knowledge, and so these references are lost upon the vast majority of younger people. Paying homage to Marlene Dietrich, Carmen Miranda, Josephine Baker…these should be immediately recognizable references, but somehow everything has become so now-centric. That’s why it’s so riveting to see someone like yourself with a curious mind discover Madonna’s intelligence. This show hit particularly hard as a young gay person at the time as queer culture seemed so gloomy and death-related due to AIDS and a heightened narrative around homophobia. Madonna’s Holiday spiel at her Paris shows was all about gays in the military. She was always so ahead of the curve.

I always get sad when people bash the "new generations" for not knowing things and complain about a "demise of culture". Like damn, give us some slack. Modern people are confronted with a flood of information that is barely to handle.
@universalsoulhealing
@universalsoulhealing Жыл бұрын
@@kklmfk6440 Well then think about the fact that we are also constantly adapting to the new while carrying the mark of culture from generations past. I thought I was relatively conscientious in making my comment so as not to trigger a generational reflex. I grew up immersed in all genres of music of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as classical music. I continue to always be inspired by and driven to discover new music. Some of my favorites like Beach House, Lana Del Rey, and Cigarettes After Sex are relatively contemporary. When I was a teenager I discovered Joni Mitchell and spent subsequent decades reveling in her artistry that existed long before I was born. I’m also from Hong Kong, grew up in France and of British and Irish parents, and eventually settled in the US, and so I learned from a multitude of cultural perspectives. I understand that this seems privileged, but it was also extremely difficult and trying at times. You shouldn’t get sad! Feel inspired to learn more! I’m still very much alive and a “modern person” in my 40s and so I don’t consider myself to be outside of this generation, and so check your ageism too.

I also hope that she performs Rain on the Celebration Tour. I'm not sure if she will though. It's only appeared twice, this and then as a mash up on the Sticky and Sweet Tour with the Eurythmics, Here comes the rain as a interlude. For years she has wanted to take a water feature on tour with her, but has been told that it's a nightmare feature. Maybe this time, I get a feeling that she is going to really go for it on this tour and do everything she has ever wanted to do. I think that this will be a really big epic production that will be off the scale. If you think that this tour is going to run into 2024. Then fall/Xmas 2024 she releases a new album, this could well be her last big arena/stadium tour. Then she will want to know that she did everything possible when she the chance. ❤️❤️👑👑

👑 I was at one of the Melbourne shows in this tour! 🙌 Even with the crappy seats I could afford then, it was unforgettable to be there with a crowd who needed that joy and needed to be SEEN like that after all the pain, hatred and death our community had faced, and still had to face in the future. The Why’s It So Hard and In This Life section always moves me to tears. Just consider how many people in any of these audiences had lost loved ones, already had HIV themselves, and in some cases would get very ill and die within the next few years. This is still before the better HIV drugs had an impact on people’s life expectancy, and even at best they took their own toll on people’s health, even up until the modern meds were introduced in 2007. Now of course, in the developed world, most people with HIV can live full and safe lives with a daily pill, but back then it was an indescribable horror that added a mortal dark heaviness to anything fun. The tone of this concert tour, as it shifts from slow song to up tempo, from escapist joy to deep sadness and resolute defiance, was very much a reflection of the way we all felt about life in this era. Your interpretations, even without all the references, are very astute. You’re absolutely right about the clown, it’s a Pierrot, a commedia dell’arte character who represents joy turned to sadness, loss and longing. The clowns role as witness throughout represents both death and the sadness of those left behind. The fact that Madonna is revealed as the clown too (and that the other dancers of all genders share the role throughout) symbolises empathy between all people in the struggles of the time, and Madonna’s heartfelt allyship in the battle with us. Two sections you had a loose interpretation of, but whose references are clear when you know them, are: The Weimar era (pronounced Vy-mar) section where Madonna sings Like a Wirgin (lol) in the guise and voice of iconic German actress and gay icon Marlene Dietrich. The Weimar era (1918-1933) was a time in German history when there were unprecedented freedoms for women and queer people, and a great outpouring of art and culture, before Hitler was appointed Chancellor and the party was decidedly over. The Second World War followed and along with Jewish people, queer people, disabled people, and other perceived misfits to the new regime, were rounded up and either imprisoned in concentration camps or murdered. Madonna is using the symbolism of this era to reflect on the brutal conservative campaigns against gay and queer people, and all people with HIV, in the 80s and 90s. Occupying Dietrich’s androgynous masculine posturing also eschews and parodies the gender binary and heteronormative conservative regime that was oppressing us during the decades surrounding this concert tour. The other reference, less serious, is the My Fair Lady art direction (all costumes for this concert were designed by Dolce and Gabbana) for Justify My Love. The section recreates the famous Ascot horse race scene, where Eliza Doolittle debuts her newly refined upper class persona in society. This idea of adopting the drag of wealth and refinement, while at heart being grounded in a more working class to middle class origin story is very Madonna. Not that she grew up poor, but she was from a very large single income Italian family, where money was tight, and when she struck out on her own she did it the hard way. The genius twist of her costume in this section is that she’s embodying both the Fair Lady AND Mr Higgins, so she’s both the transforming Pygmalion muse and the masterful visionary who manages the transformation. So you can see just how much these semiotics fit the arc of Madonna’s own reinventions. Also, THANK YOU for mentioning how much Miley Cyrus has obviously been inspired by this Madonna era. I like Miley and I think if she was asked she’d freely admit this was formative for her, but people so often thrill to the modern interpretation without knowing the source material. It’s all layers of references in the PoMo pop culture pantheon, but it’s crucial to remember that the great artists reference deeply and widely, and from a vast array of media (Madonna and Bowie bring to their own art reference as disparate as film, painting, world politics and ancient philosophies), while the lesser artists simply harvest ideas from other past pop stars. Another great reaction. Well done!

I was 12, when this first aired on HBO. My mom's elder son was getting married that night and I faked being sick so I could watch it and it changed my life. I was exposed to two men dancing sexually with each other and I finally understood why I was different. The Japan edit is better. The Australian edit cuts out a lot of what is going on around her and you miss some of the amazing show. For me the first act is exploring the different roles sex has in our life. Erotica is sex as power, fever is sex as lust, vogue with her ode to Shiva as the Lord of the Dance is sex as creation and Rain is sex as love. Act two She comes out in Express Yourself, goes to her first gay club and orgy in Deeper and Deeper, she then joins the fight for LGBT equality in Why Is It So Hard as Donna, Niki, Paul Peasco and the dancers walk into a white light or die from AIDS. Then she does In This Life which is dedicated to her best friend and soul mate Martin Bourgogne and first dance teacher, mentor and second father Christopher Flynn who died from AIDS. The Beast Within she's comparing the life of gay men to Jesus. Act three She is dressed as Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich The harlequin represents innocence. Like A Virgin is representing her nativity while working on SEX, Bye Bye Baby is how the world reacted to her, I'm Going Bananas represents her doubts and feelings following the backlash. La Isla Bonita is her thinking of giving it all up and running away and Holiday is her deciding to getting back to performing and reminding everyone why she is the greatest . Every night the middle of Holiday was different most nights she would call out dancers, band members and crews for doing something stupid and make them do pushups Encore one Justify My Love influence is The Ascot scene in the movie of My Fair Lady. The Royal Ascot Horse Racing Meeting is a weeklong horse race meet held the second week of June near Windsor Castle that was started by Queen Anne in 1704 and to this day run by The British Monarchy. It's famous and loved for its strict dress codes. And she's saying we're all afraid of what others think of our sexual fantasies Encore two Reminding us to believe in our self. During this tour she went to Israel and Turkey for the first time and The Taliban and Anatyola Khananie issued fatwas against her. Several Orthodox Jewish orgs protested her in Israel. She only did 3 cites in the mainland USA. NYC her adopted hometown, Detroit her hometown and Philadelphia the birthplace of the American Revolution. At this time in the US she was really hated. She went to South America and Australia for the first time on this tour. Jai Winding who had toured with her since the Virgin Tour was her Musical Director and arranger and it was the same band from all the previous tours but the drummer Omar replaced Jonathan Moffett. Costumes by Dolce & Gabanna, Alex Magno, Keith Young, and Michelle Johnston choreographed. Only Carlton the tall black guy returned from Blond Ambition, Jeffery Hornady staged and directed the show with Madonna and Madonna and Christopher Ciccone designed and created it. Where Blond Ambition changed how pop shows were done this is the show she actually prefected that style. This is where she made it clear she performs the show she wants and doesn't do what you want her to perform. It's her art and she'll do it as she pleases. And you will enjoy it. For changing into the white shirt that wouldn't work. She's the only blonde onstage and her costumes are always standouts so people in nosebleeds have no problem identifying her on stage. Madonna during rehearsals sees the show from every possible vantage point to ensure everyone sees what she wants them to see. One of the reasons her shows are so much better. She had commissioned Gene Kelly to choreograph the rain interlude but she hated it so had it changed and didn't tell him but left him in the credits

She did wear a white vest during Everybody so that she, Niki and Donna were all dressed identically to all the dancers. This was certainly the case during the first few shows. I'm not sure when she started wearing local football tops? ❤️❤️ I agree with you that it helps her stand out on stage. Fun fact: M originally intended on having her hair identical to the Rain video but because she cut all the dancers hair short and coloured dark she just blended into the crowd so she had no choice but to go blonde again. ❤️❤️ I am wondering if she will keep her current hair colour for the Celebration Tour shows this year?!? ❤️❤️

Happy Birthday Ryan.... How old are you dear? I am at the Sydney concert and it was a long long, long wait for her to perform in Australia (there were rumours and whispers at that time on her many visits to Australia in secret for recreational purposes before the tour 1993 for holidays way back in the late 80s and without the public nor media knowledge as it was documented afterwards, wether it was true or not I can't be certain but I heard it from many friends of mine at the time - the days before social media and instant photo lab/mobile or cell phone was extraordinary if you think how the biggest star on earth could come and go secretly - today impossible - true not sure). We were a little disappointed that she didn't sing the songs we all grew up with and adored - front row and gaging - my friends and I did all agree, so you are right to come to that conclusion as well. The scene when she is wearing a tux is her take on Marlene Dietrich performance playing a bisexual woman in the movie 'Morocco' (1930) and the Girlie show had a bohemian feel of Germany (mainly Berlin) in the 1920s - 30s - Bauhaus/ Metropolis feel to it. Great concert and we loved it - even though we would have liked a few of the earlier songs her performance made the show fabulous and exceeded our expectation.

I love what she did with a Express Yourself/Deeper and Deeper being a 70s disco turned orgy, and then transition to the 80s with Why’s It So Hard and In the Life with the social injustice and AIDS crisis. It’s almost like cause and effect, life vs death, joy vs pain. It’s such a universal theme that she cleverly touches on in several of her tours.

At the time people were annoyed because she did so few old hits and did so many songs from Erotica (seven I think, which was a lot). I know some fans prefer the Girlie Show, but Blond Ambition will always been my favorite because it was so groundbreaking and nothing will ever top that religious segment. I do agree that this show is "tighter" and more polished. But Blond Ambition walked so The Girlie Show (and every other pop concert that followed) could run. Be sure to watch the Girlie Talk interview - she goes into detail about her inspiration for "Like a Virgin" and "Holiday," etc.

Def one of my favorite tours. Unfortunately didn't get to see it live as she only visited 3 cities in the US. Of course, I blamed that wholly on America and the way they had responded to Erotica and SEX. So stylish and artistic, as always, drawing references from around the world and pop culture history....from disco to Dietrich to My Fair Lady. Amazing costumes by Dolce & Gabbana! Absolutely influenced my club wardrobe at the time....velvet bell bottoms and feather boas, baby! And I still love a mariner stripe top or a military style coat. Also, by the time of her next tour, the huge video backdrops had been introduced. And while they undoubtedly add so much dimension to a show, it's nice to see what could be achieved on a stage in what now seems to be an old skool format.

I think it’s important to recognize this show in context with the album and book the year before. Everything was very Queer, subversive, and a complete resistance to the hyper conservative family values mainstream happening at the time. It’s amazing that someone would take all of that success and fame and put it on the line for the sake of speaking her mind and standing up for what she believed. I was a teenager then - I remember the hate she endured. Truly courageous.

Nice reaction! I attended the show at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It was my first time seeing Madonna, but I had terrible seats. If I remember correctly, my seats were somewhat behind the stage. I don't even know if the venue continues to sell such awful seats for their concerts. Since this tour I've seen Madonna another eleven times I don't have tickets as of yet for the new tour, but I plan on attending. Anyway, keep up the good work!

You will be glad to hear that there is not another full tour until 13 years later. The Drowned World tour. I'm not sure if you will enjoy it at all. It very Avant Garde, dark and violent and contains only two songs from the 80's. Personally it's one of my favourite tours as there were so many shockingly violent images, of course she comes out on top! Anyway you have almost a decade of music videos, interviews to enjoy. You will see her transfer into Veronica Electronica. ❌❌❌👑👑💯 💯💛💚💙💜💗♥️♥️. You must try and check out M and An Anotothy Kieds they dusted on The lady is a tramp. Best part is because M was being a tramp in the Newspapers, so they wore identical outfits. Split in skirt to show suspenders and Anotothy wearing her lip stick. 💗♥️

The only European show (Virgin tour was America only) I haven't seen live. I was on a road trip through France and thought about going to see it in Paris, but I didn't. Which I still regret until this day. My favorite together with 'Confessions tour'.

30:15 The yellow/gold coloured top Madonna is wearing is in ode of Australia's national colours. Here in Los Angeles where I live the radio station was giving away two tickets to see this concert in Australia and you had to be caller 102. And I called in and the guy picked up the phone and said “dude you are caller 101.” And he hung up on me. And of course I cried ! Lol!

My story with The Girlie Show is like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was the poor kid who wouldn’t watch her when she came to Brazil in 1993. And then there was a brewery that was sponsoring the concert in Brazil. The brand my stepfather used to drink. And the ticket came in a pack of six cans.

Not only did this tour influence future pop performances, it also influenced her contemporaries at the time, a few pop divas of that time sneered and put Madonna down for being what she always was, sexual and letting that sexuality be the basis of he tour performance, but masterfully poking fun of or gender bending way ahead of it's time to make a statement. It wasn't a matter of time that the chirpy gospel style songstress Mariah Carey, the goody two-shoes Janet Jackson rapidly sexed up their images because they knew Madonna, who owned it first, struck gold with it.

Mariahs new image had a lot to do with rebeling and releasing herself from her abusive husband/manager Tommy Mottola who didnt allow her to show any skin on any of her tour of music video outfits!! Madonna of course is the blueprint and im happy Mariah liberated herself

The clown is Pierrot, a 17th century Itallian character in pantomine, portraying the sad clown. I think The Girlie Show is Madonna’s Cabaret show of real life, with sad and happy times. Pierrot represents that theme. But that’s just me maybe😊

youre kinda complainey reacting to this stunning show. considering many fans, including myself, think its her best, your constant picking at every little thing got irritating. you just witnessed a perfect combination of a concert & cabaret. and maybe instead of expecting her to live up to YOUR expectations... you should get with what SHE has decided to present to you. "this is not my favorite...". we get it. negative vibes from you this time around. and get used to Madonna not presenting Greatest Hits tours... youll NEVER see one so if thats what you want, stop watching them now! Madonna doesnt do greatest hits tours. well, until now.

I said it was her at her best. I said it was my favourite concert of her. I said while songs weren’t my favourite that didn’t matter and that they were still incredible to watch. I commented that I didn’t hear certain songs, like anyone would if they didn’t hear their favourites. I have said many times, she blows my expectations everytime. Maybe you should stop watching my video, because I will never not speak my mind. And FYI, it’s your opinion that it wad a perfect combination, doesn’t make it a fact.
