This is probably the most deep existential review of any Madonna video reaction here. You guys are really good huh. You brought in fresh perspective to an old classic that us fans sometimes neglect to look further into. Good job guys 👍

I felt the same way. I've listened to this song forever but for some reason, I never thought of it being her inner dialogue etc. But she is known for writing songs so they can be read on many different levels.
@ManuelLopez-vo5qp3 жыл бұрын
Regularly they’re always talking about the crows and the dog, and about her flying or another banality

You guys were right with the "mmm" part. During this time Madonna gave birth to her first child Lourdes Leon and this changed her life and her philosophy of how to live it, so she got into Kabbalah and Hinduism for many years (I think she stills practices some of this). And all of these things made her write the Ray of light album which is a masterpiece in music. Amazing reaction

Good interpretation. Madonna is a Legend. From the catchy hooks, bops, her use of symbolism, vivid imagery, sound experimentation, fashion, longevity and envelope pushing subject matter....she is leagues ahead of all other pop stars. she is still an Icon today.

she is definitely a Legend. not a fan of her current music, but her discography speaks for itself. Well done Madonna, queen of pop.

Madonna Bad Girl official MV. Her most cinematic video. Directed by David Fincher. Amazing cinematography.
@curls4theculture8623 жыл бұрын
Wow I haven’t seen this video in a LONG time. I think she won an award for the cinematography I think she’s represented in three to represent the three aspects of a woman: the maiden, the mother and the crone. Like the moon it symbolizes birth, fullness , then death/rebirth

Another verbally rich song and visually deep is “paradise not for me” from the drowned world tour. The words are very deep and can take on different meanings for people. The confessions tour is sung beautifully too.

Such an song, but the drowned world tour video’s audio quality doesn’t do justice to it.

I was 26yo old when this came out, and of course I bought the CD straight away. I was always a fan but I'd never bought a CD or LP of hers before this one. But Ray Of Light... wow. It was a huge moment for Madonna. A monumental album that is super rich (in depth) and powerful. I have consistently listened to the album since it came out. Hearing Frozen for the first time was like a religious experience. It's haunting but beautiful at the same time and has a way of tapping into you like a shamanic ritual. The melody in the chorus is truly special. And I've always found her vocals to be very angelic. The album has never really been out of my life. I listen to it when I need to get through something or feel something. In saying that, by 1998, Hinduism, Buddhism, any non-western philosophy had become pretty generic. There was a mini revival of sorts compared to the 60s influence of eastern philosophy. But, put any ideas in the hands of Madonna, and she transforms it. She, as an artist, knows how to create something very meaningful, even if it had become somewhat basic. You know, like those Buddha statues people in the west buy to feel enlightened. True enlightenment comes from love. And that's another thing. In India and other Buddhist countries, the meaning of Buddhism is lost to a great degree. The same goes with any religion. You take it for granted. But Madonna was trying to say that love is the centre of all noble actions and all that inspires real greatness. I'd say the Hinduism she utilises is purely symbolic. A way for westerners to connect based on the "fashion" of eastern religion. But if there are any misgivings there, the song overcomes it. It's that good. This is definitely amongst the best reaction videos out there. The way you really allowed yourself to enter the world that was created, and consider some other important factors about the song and musician was very genuine and philosophical. Good work. Well done. EDIT: Oh, I just wanted to add that this video was groundbreaking for the time. She used some serious technology to create such fluid transitions and other effects. Michael Jackson also used tech in the same way. We were mesmerised because back then, movies from the western world hadn't fully realised the potential of technology (you needed Tarkovsky, Bergman, Goddard, Antonioni, Fellini, Varda, etc., to see any cinematic strides-although there were certainly some here and there in America-like Gus van Sant or Stanley Kubrick; we can't forget Kubrick!). Music videos are really an artform, made that way by people like Madonna. The directors I named above inspired her. Madonna knows about the history of art. These days, special effects (done so fantastically) are everywhere. For us at the time, this was something rare and amazing.

Good insight on this masterful song. I love how Madonna’s music can mean many things to different listeners. I had never thought that she might be talking to herself, either in terms of her personal life or her spiritual life... I just assumed she was singing about a lover who is closed off. Her music will absolutely live on, particularly with younger people discovering her like this. Thank you and please continue on a Madonna journey!

I also took the song this way my whole life, however this new take on speaking to herself & finding self-love makes this song even more special to me.

I originally interpreted the song's message to be directed at the general public not limited to one particular person who is a lover.

Madonna is all about reinvention, you are right. She pushed boundaries, she shocked, she looked different all the time, she experimented. When she released a new single or album it was a huge deal. I loved her from about the age of 10 when I first heard Into the Groove and Like a Virgin. I think she is the bees knees.

Really good review and just found it today. She's wearing Mehndi on her hands, painted with henna. The symbol it's Om, the choreography I guess she was inspired by traditional dances in Thailand, that uses hand gestures, and she's also depicting goddess Hecate - both on the video and lyrics. Some people say this video is satanic. I think it's an homage to the sacred feminine. And humming has roots in ancient east as a type of meditation, "as we hum we are generating our own energy to heal and center ourselves. Humming brings us straight down from the head and into the body, keeping us alert yet relaxed. It has a soothing, calming effect as the vibration of the sounds resonates throughout the body/mind" (found this on google, but's quite interesting though).

If someone hasn't commented this yet. TRIVIA: most of the singing parts were edited in reverse to achieve the effect "out of this worldly" movement of her clothes. She had to memorize the song backwards to synch her lips to the lyrics during the shoot.

G'day it's Steven from Down Under This is my first time watching I discovered Madonna when I was a boy back in 1983 and it's been a wild ride ever since, she is a brilliant and provocative artist, she's fierce and real, hence the title Queen of Pop. Y'all are a beautiful and articulate couple, it's great to see younger generations enjoy Madonna too. This is one of my favourite Madonna songs, there are so many more brilliant songs in her catalogue. Why not react to the following Madonna songs, I can guarantee y'all will enjoy the ride and appreciate Madonna more. You'll see I'll remember Take a bow Love don't live here anymore Dress you up The Power of goodbye Rain Erotica God Control Rescue Me Live to Tell Papa Don't Preach Open your Heart Ray of Light Girl gone Wild Living for Love American Life Nothing really Matters This use to be my Playground Oh Father Music Hung Up Four Minutes Miles Away Spotlight La Isla Bonita Vogue Ghost Town **2012 Super Bowl halftime show Sooner or Later ( live 1991 Oscars )

Madonna was the biggest female recording artist from 1985 to 1991! From 1992 to 1997 tho still selling millions of albums was being outsold by Mariah and celine. Then from 1998-2001 became the biggest female recording artist the came back again in 2005-2006 again became a huge star with confessions. Every album Madonna has always managed to change her image and music style. She is the female counterpart to David Bowie

Love this reaction and you are so tight with the symbolism.. This album that this song is from was a spiritual awakening/journey album it is incredible as a whole.. as well as, some great individual songs. Madonna is every bit the visual performance artist and as, she gained more creative control in her work this, really flourished both in her videography and live theatrical tours which have so many themes messages, storyline, and her attention to detail and the cultural references, symbols and cyphers she uses will give you a lot of fun decoding or indeed interpreting.. I'm willing u both to go on a Madonna journey.. I loved this.. I think you'd get a lot out of it.. Try Bedtime Story, Like A Prayer or Oh Father next xxx
