I remember when this song came out. Madonna had disappeared for a while and everyone thought she was washed up. Then this came out and she was back with a vengeance.

Yes after the Evita Soundtrack in 1996, she kinda vanished. I thought that she's done everything, there's nothing left to do? Madonna has peaked. Was I wrong about it. She was just getting started. Nobody, really nobody expected Madonna to return with Frozen and Ray Of Light.

I don't follow Madonna to a large degree, but my impression of Frozen back in 1998 was that it was everywhere for a couple months, and then the song Ray of Light overshadowed it... really feel that Frozen is the stronger song, but became almost forgotten when ROL hit.
@sashabertold3731
@sashabertold3731 3 жыл бұрын
@@condemned1982 Yes agree, Frozen is the stronger song. There are also other strong songs on Ray Of Light that she should've released like Skin, Sky Fits Heaven, Swim, To Have Not To Hold, Little Star, and I belive Mer Girl would've also been cool. She really should've released all of the above as singles because it was just something in '98 and '99. One last thing, Madonna should've included Arioso on Ray Of Light or released as a soundtrack single, a finely crafted but wasted song all forgotten!

I suggest "Crave" one of the most beautiful songs from her most recent album "Madame X" released in 2019. She's still active, but american radios don't play her songs because she's "old", she's fighting now against "ageism" and she will win the battle, you'll see. After almost 4 decades of unmatched career, she's still on top. Long live the one and only Queen of Pop, Her Madgesty!!

I am sorry, but the Ray of Light album would not have existed without Madonna's songwriting. If it wasn't for songs that Madonna wrote, no one today would even care to mention the name "William Orbit". It is as clear as the sunlight who is the principal creator There’s a reason why Orbit, Leonard, Mirwais etc. never had much acclaim or success outside of their collaborations with Madonna, she is the common denominator here.
@athmaid
@athmaid 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrystalCoffin bro what. She specifically wanted Orbit's style on this, e.g. the electronic elements and "ethnic" drum sounds. He had done remixes of her songs before that. The unusual elements he brought in were probably crucial to set this album apart from the rest of her work and that of her contemporaries. I think her wish to work with him specifically makes it pretty clear that he was more important to the sound and success of the album than you give him credit for.

She was musically relevant for decades in pop music and helped push the music video to knew heights. This song was a departure, and one of my favorites. She was controversial because she was in your face about religion and sexual freedom from a woman’s perspective. Basically, she is "controversial" because she's always spoken her mind, because she doesn't give a sh*t in expressing herself and saying what she wants. In fact, She's the best selling female recording artist in music history, worldwide, the Queen of Pop.

Boycotted? Nah but she definitely had the press saying she was "over" as soon as Erotica and the sex book hit the shelves. The album still sold and the press just gave up criticizing her. They just reported all the wacky stages she went through (Lesbian baiting, Dennis Rodman, family drama with the brother, beefing with Lady Gaga, using the N word, awful acting in every movie, kissing Britney and Christina on stage....) and the world was better for it. Press good or bad can keep your name out there.

She was the Queen of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. You watched her Like A PRayer video, that was one of her most controversial. American Life Uncensored from 2003 was another one. This song is from 1998, the album sold over 16 million worldwide and won 4 Grammys and 8 Video Music Awards that year.

The production on this track was/is insane. Not a Madonna fan but, when this song first came out, I instantly went out and bought this single. William Orbit is an absolutely amazing producer. The pairing of orchestral instrumentation with industrial drums and percussion resulted in one of the best songs of Madonna's career.

This was from 1998. She was really experimenting with sound more than ever, and she partnered with William Orbit, a brilliant electronic artist in his own right for the whole Ray of Light album. She was definitely going with a Bjork vibe on this track. (Check out the BRILLIANT video for "Bachelorette" by Bjork from the previous year). I would definitely check out all the singles ("Nothing Really Matters", "Ray of Light", "Drowned World", "The Power of Goodbye") from Madonna's Ray of Light album if I were you, though. And if you were gonna own one Madonna album (besides a singles compilation of Greatest Hits) Ray of Light is inarguably the one. Every track is brilliant and a sonic treat for the ears. She also had a hit with "Beautiful Stranger" produced by William Orbit for the Austin Powers 2 soundtrack. Her follow-up LP, 2000's Music was almost as good (the title track is easily one of her best singles), and moved her even further toward experimental electronic textures and pumping dancefloor anthems while throwing in a little bit of Country Music influence (the monster hit, "Don't Tell Me") to fuck with our heads, LOL. Brilliant. She was as good during this period as she was during her 1982-90 peak if you ask me. The first part of the 90s had a lot of solid moments ("Deeper and Deeper", "This Used to Be My Playground"), but she seemed more interested in fame and controversy than art during that era.

This Used To Be My Playground kills me to this day. I can’t separate it from the movie, and the old ladies playing baseball, with spaces for the lost friends.

This album Ray of Light is one of her albums I like best. The best album for me is, though, American Life, which many people don't care for. I could be an acquired taste. My favourite songs on there are "American Life", "X-Static Process", "Nothing Fails", "Intervention", "Die Another Day" (was in a Bond movie) and "Easy Ride".

This was from the Ray of Light album and that whole production was something entirely different from the pop music she was known for. This album is in thanks to motherhood and giving birth to Lourdes. She got into yoga and Kabbalah and just spiritual soul searching. It was a breath of fresh air. I remember it being released 20 something years ago. One of my all time favorite albums from her.

Your disbelief at how this is Madonna echoes what happened in our household when we viewed this video for the first time back in '98. It literally silenced the room. Ray Of Light is an incredible era.

Frozen is from the the late nineties. Confessions on the Dance Floor is her album from 2005. I consider it one of her best. Talk about well-produced. I also think you would love her album Hard Candy, a few years later. It harkens back to the great R&B of the eighties.

Madonna had seen how successful William Orbit had been with his Grammy and Ivor Novello Award winning electronic music and brought him in for this album. The electronic sound had a lot to do with his work on the album.
