I felt pity for my father and this line cemented it in my mind as a child. As a mother, I can't forgive any longer. I can't excuse the abuse. I suffered too, I was hurt but I changed the tide. I won't do that my child. Never will I make her hurt like I did. I'd rather cut out my tongue

I suffered sexual abuse for many years, from my childhood until my teenage years. I met Madonna when I was 13, and this was one of the first songs I heard from her through the album "Something to Remember". This song saved me, healed me, showed a light that didn't come from anywhere else. The chorus of this song became my feat of war to chase away the demon that abused my body and hurt my soul. Today I'm 36 years old, and sometimes that wound still hurts, so I come back here, and this song heals me again. Thank you, Madonna. You saved countless lives with your art, mine included.

My mum died last month. She abused me to the point of breaking bones. Much worse than that, her verbal abuse broke my spirit. My father treated me like a princess. When he died, I was devastated. When my mother died, I was relieved. Now, I just feel numb. I realise that her father treated her the same way, which is why this song reaonates with me. Maybe one day, I'll learn to forgive her. Here is where the survivor is born.

Yeah, it's a great scene. The whole video is just so amazing. People thought this was biographical, and in some ways it is. I think Madonna's mother dying really, really messed Madonna up. She was jealous of the housekeepers that tried to run the house, and I can't imagine how she felt when Tony married Joan. I'm sure he loves her very much, and I think he was upset when this video came out. I don't think he ever abused her, but I think she couldn't understand that he still had to live his life, and he moved on. I think Madonna has too, in some ways, but in some ways not.

This was the first Madonna video I'd had exposure to, as a young teen. Oh, I'd heard her songs on the radio before but I didn't watch a lot of TV until 1989/90. Basically it's the song that got me "into" Madonna. For that reason this song has always struck a very nostalgic chord with me. Definitely her most emotional song, and at the same time so very different than anything else she'd recorded up to that point aside from Live To Tell. It's almost like it came from a different artist, it was so different. But I agree, it should have been a much bigger hit, I was shocked when I started doing chart research it basically broker her top 10 streak. But that may be nostalgia speaking, and still speaking 30 years (ugh!) later.

Madonna's most beautiful, soulful and heart-wrenching song. The video belongs to Madonna's "Icon" phase when she lifted the music video from a form of promotion to an art form deserving of the highest praise. I played this for my father when I was a teenager but he was too distracted by work to know what the lyrics were or how deliberate I was being. If you listen to the entire Like A Prayer album, you'll notice that vocally, Madonna sounds like she's on the verge of tears on nearly every song- including "Oh, Father". Even on the happier songs like "Dear Jessie" and "Cherish", there's this bittersweet tinge of sadness to her vocals; it sounds like her voice is breaking and she's trying so hard to sound hopeful.
@ozzert6 жыл бұрын
That is actually a trait that her voice always has had (to me at least, I also noticed it clearly on the True Blue album, but even in earlier songs like 'Love don't live here anymore', 'Crazy for you', etc.) It's the very reason she has gotten away with being not the most technically gifted singer, but what she lacked (though she got much better over the years) technically, was more than outweighed by her ability to convey an emotion; it's why I like her voice so much :)

I'm sure she was emotional during the recordings of a certain songs, but it's her voice at the time. she has that same tone of voice on the erotica album. and later it began to change as she was grown and took lessons for the evita picture, so that has changed the way she used to use her voice. I always prefer her early vocals with much less technical things, but much more heart & soul she used to put on it.

@mriyefa2196 Totally agree with you. It's a criminally underrated song. If this song was given its due upon release it would have gone to number 1 immediately. But it didn't do as well as all the other singles from Like. A Prayer, maybe the subject matter was deemed too heavy at the time. That being said, the song is amazing regardless of its commercial appeal. You can just gage by reading these comments how much this song means to countless people.

This is her masterpiece in my view. It's here that we glimpse the real woman and her feelings. It's such a powerful song, perhaps too much so, which is why it didn't do well on release. The Madonna we see today is a million miles away from this, sadly.

One of the best music videos of all time. This music video packs more story and emotion than some 2 hour films. There is so much to unpack here: death of a parent, grief, parental neglect, child abuse, alcoholism, abusive relationships, forgiveness, resilience, and in a metaphorical sense, conflicting emotions about God and religion. This video and the song that inspired it are masterpieces.

I grew up as a gay little boy with a very abusive dad. He'd hit me with a belt, throw my mother down the stairs, punch us, I was terrified of setting him off. I would get in trouble at school because I couldn't do my homework, and I'd be way to scares to ask my dad for help. And God bless my mother, she was amazing, but she isn't the cleverest. I started to rebel around age 14, I stopped going to school, got into drugs etc. I remember the first ever time I hit my dad back. He battered me for it, but it felt good. I might have been skinnier, but i was taller than u now dad. At 16 the legal age we leave school in the UK, my dad put me out. Now he wasn't obligated by the law to make sure I attend school etc, I could leave. I had nowhere to go. I'd walk the street all night aimlessly. I'd sit in parks, light the bin on fire. I started to sell myself, I'd go to the gay bars in town and would throw myself at any guy who was half decent. I had no respect for myself, I'd always been put down, called stupid, I'd never amount to anything etc. I'd sell myself for anything at first, a bed for the night, some cigs and drinks. I got older and started doing 'well' for myself, I became a good earner within the sex trade. But it never fulfilled me, I was always sad really, no matter how good I looked or how in shape I was. I was obsessed with my image, as I felt because I'm stupid and haven't gotten much to offer if I look good, and people wanna sleep with me, I'll feel better, i never did. So after about ten years, my mum had gotten ill with cancer and passed away. I as devastated. I tried to reconnect with my dad but I just couldn't forgive him. Another few years pass, I end up in jail for 18 months. My boyfriend at the time was dealing, and the police busted our flat. I was sentenced for possession of heroin. I didn't know who to call, I was very ill, I rang my sister and my she got in touch with my dad. He came and visited me. He seemed sad, said my mum would be devastated as she always wanted the best for me. She wanted me to have everything she didn't. As he was going to leave, my dad turned and said to me, I'm sorry boy. As he left the visiting I burst into tears. I didn't see him again til I came out. I went to visit him and he opened the door and again I began to cry. He said I'm sorry Alex. I said daddy I'm sorry too. He went on to tell me how his dad had beat him black and blue, I knew his dad was an alcoholic but he would never talk about him. He told me that an adult male close to my grandmother had sexually abused him as a kid. He told me he never felt like he knew how to show me he loved me. And the fact I was an effiminate little boy made it harder for him. Man I fell off the chair, I couldn't believe what he was saying. He cried, apologised over n over. He told me he'd always been so angry, and it had caused him to loose sight of what really matters etc. I looked at my dad, and I said daddy I'm sorry for letting u down. I'm sorry for embarrassing u, I felt like that little boy again. And then I told him, dad I forgive u. I didn't realise all these years that ur anger had come from a place of deep hurt. U hurt me, coz someone had hurt u too. I cried and balled when I got home. I don't know why my dad mellowed out as he got older, but I'm so glad he did. I was released from prison in 2012 and have rebuilt my life. I'm a hairstylist now. And have a loving amazing boyfriend. And yes, me and my dad are ok. We don't talk all the time, but we're good. He told me he loved me and I don't know why, even as a grown man, I felt so good. I needed to hear it. My mum had always said he loved us, he provides for us etc, but doesn't know how to show it. And I think now that yeah, she was right. Sorry this is so long, I've never ever unburdened myself like this before. Sending love from the UK x

This song is incredibly healing for me. As someone who suffered abandonment from my biological father this hits home. He left when I was still a toddler. But became involved in my life when I was 17 years old. Unfortunately he was a narcissistc alcoholic. The "relationship" we had was the type of relationship you have with a party friend. And emotionally abusive to say the least. But I took my power back. I told him I deserved healthy relationships in my life and ended the abuse he subjected me to. Decades later, we still have no contact. But I can truly say I've forgiven him. He was a product of his own upbringing. He didn't love himself, and therefore could not love others. I'm so glad I went through therapy and now see him in a different way. I finally feel free from the bondage I allowed to consume me for decades. I'm sure this song was incredibly healing for Madonna 💜

@kizzume8 жыл бұрын
James Raymond You can count it in 12; though, now that I think about it, it might be 12/4. The 4 or 8 has to do with comparing it to a 1/4 note or an 1/8 note, so if you can count it quickly, it's more likely to have a /8 at the and, and if it counts out slowly, it's more likely to have a /4 at the end. So in this case, since it can be counted in 12, and it's not that fast of a count, it's most likely 12/4.

"'Oh Father' is like the second half of 'Live to Tell', in a way. It was a combo package-it was about my father and my husband. I was dealing with male authority figures once again. That is a great source of inspiration in my writing. - Madonna

There's something very hauntingly beautiful about this ballad. A Masterpiece for sure, the lyrics, the video, the tone of her voice. Everything about this song is beautiful.

@paulwilliams1732I identify so strongly with live to tell. My first marriage was terrible I barely got out of it alive. Then I got married a second time worst mistake of my life he darn near killed me. Because of the trauma both of them subjected me to I now have PTSD. I'm in counseling and it's helping me to deal with the trauma and helping me to heal emotionally. This song really speaks to me. Madonna was one of my all time favorites that I listened to as a teen and a young woman. Her music helped me in so many ways. Music has the power to help us emotionally heal.

Pop music simply doesn't get any better than this. This was Madonna at her musical and visual peak. Stunning to behold.

Beautiful, emotional ballad. It's funny how Madonna a primarily Dance/Pop artist can make such rich ballads such as Oh father, Live to tell, Take a Bow, The power of goodbye etc. etc.

Sadly people overlook this talent she has. A true chameleon. One moment she’s provocative, the next she’s emotional and vulnerable. True beauty.

There are few artist that give me chills but she is defiantly one of them. Her voice is magnetic. It's draws you in a way only few other artist can. She has an energy no other female performer has. She is a legend. I'm so glad I got grow up with Madonna.

Holy shit I've never heard this song and now I am absolutely mad over it I just went and bought Like a Prayer I played this like over a hundred times . Why was this song Never on any of her greatest hit albums
@teralmiles4 жыл бұрын
Deron Bennett Because sadly it was never a hit! The UK chose to release it in the mid 90’s to promote the Something to Remember album, and it was then already 6yrs old, hence why it only reached number 16 in the charts. Huge cock up.. It should’ve been release in the UK in1989 instead of Dear Jessie! At least it was released in America during the Like a Prayer album period.

@@teralmiles l think it was the sewn lips too. I was a kid when this was released out on TV. I remember the contraversy about the kid looking into the coffin and seeing that... So much of this abuse was going on in the 80's, in my house too. The lyrics were relatable, such a shame it didn't get much coverage.
@morganjanelle42824 жыл бұрын
@@irishcountrygirl78 I agree that the lips sewn shut were a factor back then as to why it didn't get played much on MTV. They (the censors or whoever, lol) *knew* that her moms' lips being sewn shut was symbolic of the fact that her mom knew about the abuse but was afraid to say anything about it. Compared to the crap MTV shows nowadays (and not even music videos), seeing some lips sewn shut wasn't going to traumatize anyone, ya know? The MTV censors did the same thing with the video for Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." In the *real* video, at the end, Jeremy walked into his classroom, threw an apple to his teacher, stood up in front of the blackboard (chalkboard), pulled a gun, and committed suicide in front of his class...all the kids who had bullied him. Then the camera pans onto all of the students who have blood splattered all over them and they're in shock. It was Jeremy's blood on them, but MTV censors felt that showing Jeremy putting the gun in his mouth would be too graphic, so they eliminated that 2-second scene, 🙄 and by eliminating that scene, it gave the impression that Jeremy had turned the gun on all of his classmates and that he had shot up/killed his classmates. It wasn't until years and years later when KZbin became a thing (lol) that everybody found out that Jeremy had actually killed _himself_ and that it was _his_ blood on all the classmates...not _theirs._ Personally, in my opinion they may as well have left the gun/mouth scene *in* because by removing that scene made it look like a school shooting. You've probably seen it, but here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4ScYp6kqt-ihaM "Jeremy" is actually a true story.

Morgan Janelle yes he was from Texas. Regarding Madonna’s mother’s mouth sewed shut is not about her keeping her mouth shut about abuse. Madonna said it’s the one moment she remembered about her mother’s funeral.
