Fortunately the movie did do well both commercially and criticly so no one had to point the finger at Madonna. She also won the Best Leading Female Golden Globe 1997 for it and it was pretty controversial that she was not nominated for the Oscar as many felt she deserved it. The soundtrack also was a huge success, i think it did 10 million worldwide or even more. Evita overall was a great success and she was perfect for the role.

As "Mother Madonna," her artistry is poised to become even more profound and captivating, especially after Evita. If you enjoy musicals, you absolutely must watch Evita. The entire story is sung from start to finish, even the conversations, making it a unique and immersive experience. It was a huge success and, in my opinion, her finest film performance. While she deservedly won a Golden Globe for the role, it felt unjust that she didn’t receive an Oscar. The new song written especially for her, “You Must Love Me,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, adds an emotional depth to the soundtrack. She even performed it beautifully at the Oscars.

I think you should watch the movie, it was a big deal in 1996/1997, she won awards, she performed at the Oscars and won one for Music. The soundtrack did very well Evita peaked at number two in the US Billboard 200 chart, and was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It topped the charts in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and has sold over seven million copies worldwide.

As for the film, it is her most critically and commercially accepted so I would say just watch it so you can say you've seen it. Madonna in 1997, when arrived was a lot of incredible changes of her life. Not only her daugther, she discovers yoga, the Kabbalah religion who she was religiously implicated and she made a lot of introspection of her life after the born of her daugther. Theses changes was reflect a lot when she starting to wrote her ''Ray of Light''. ''Don't Cry for Me Argentina'' and ''You Must Be Love'' was released in single, you have to skipped the music video of ''Don't Cry for Me Argentina since this was only the scene of this movie.

Yeah I definitely picked up the tone of the interviewer. I think Madonna was repeating back the questions because he was wording them in a way designed to catch her out. Brave of him to be questioning the choices of a new mother. She went nice on him.

@@EmpressReacts Yeah, there were a bunch of small interviews in 1996. The two most important interviews are a year apart. First, the Primetime Live Interview in December of 1995 (just before filming on "Evita" started). Madonna spent most of 1996 filming - and being pregnant/giving birth (October, 1996). The first Oprah interview was in December of 1996, when "Evita" had already been screened but not yet fully released. 🙂

Watch the movie and review IT, and not the soundtrack album. Its a beautiful film, and its hands-down her best on-screen film performance. Her next studio album is mind blowing...

Empress! Yay, we're back! You've watched previous movies, but this one you must watch. Not for any other reason than Madonna's VOCALS are forever changed from her training for Evita. The movie is fine or great, depending on if you like musicals. It's definitely one of Madonna's best movies and she still considers it a pinnacle in her career.You can skip every movie after Evita if that makes you feel better lol

Hey there. Just a little context , or Trivia, Madonna found out she was with child at the very beginning of filming the movie evita . In fact she took a break to film love don’t live here anymore music video ( that you reacted to) and she was in her first trimester during that shoot . She later confessed to Oprah that she was convinced she was hurting her baby because all of the grueling dancing required for the movie , she employed a female dr to give her daily reassurance. She was 37 , it was her first and at that age it’s considered an at risk pregnancy ( so her concerns were valid ) The interview you reacted to above she was 40 , can you believe it ? Already middle aged. She looked beautiful none the less . I would encourage you to watch the movie as it exceeded expectations and was a commercial and critical success. It garnered M her first golden globe and an Oscar for best song you must love me, which she sang graciously at the academy awards even tho she was snubbed. So if you don’t watch the movie do watch the you must love me music video ( where she was very pregnant) and the Oscar’s performance of the song. Thanks

Yes you must watch it. 2 years of her career are encapsulated into it. This is the Broadway, Andrew Lloyd Weber, award winning musical. Madonna barely speaks, it’s mostly a huge music video. The movie clocks in over 80 outfits for her, a Guinness record, and she does get nominated (win??) for awards. Plus this casting made her a few enemies in the biznez, Patti LuPone especially who played Eva on the stage and has a greater voice/range than Madonna but wasn’t as well known as Madonna so she might not have pulled the same $$ at the box office. She discovered her pregnancy halfway through filming.

And they definitely wouldn't have liked Eva Peron. Madonna was more sympathetic and nuanced in her version. Imo.

Hi Empress! I would say that Evita is Madonna's most important film. You should definitely watch it! Without giving away too much, prepare to think of it like an extra long Madonna video. 😜 Also I've mentioned this before, but I would not recommend listening to the whole soundtrack before watching Evita, maybe just the singles. It's basically the whole movie on an album - like literally the whole movie - and it will totally ruin it and kill all the "surprise." I think the majority of Madonna fans would agree with me on this. And you know I appreciate the way you watch and listen to everything, don't usually skip over things, so this is the only time I would say that. But we'll still love you no matter how you do it!

Pretty sure at this point Madonna had the Maverick record label. She was in charge of plenty but Matt couldn’t articulate the question properly, perhaps because he was star struck in this first interview with her. She was a true boss at this time

I'll be honest: I never bought the _Evita_ soundtrack and only know the songs from it that were released as singles... nor have I seen the movie in its entirety. I basically pressed pause following the _Something to Remember_ album. If you're planning to react to the _Evita_ album, it will be interesting to hear most of those songs for the first time through your perspective. I was glad that Madonna got to play that role, and I'm happy that the movie and album were successful. I also appreciated her more calm and serene demeanor during that middle 90s period, but musicals and show tunes were never my thing, so I let the whole 'Evita' era fly over my head.

I see your point but surely if the actor looks the part that’s all that matters no? She clearly looked Spanish in the movie and Argentina is full of pale skinned Spanish immigrants. Eva peron was pale skinned for a Spanish descendant woman. It was really difficult for her to get the part.

Is it a musical? Girl. It's ALL music, sung from start to finish, maybe 2 lines of spoken dialogue in the whole thing. The entire soundtrack was recorded and then the movie was filmed, so kind of like an epic music video, which our girl is more than equipped to handle. The Antonio Banderas role is like a narrator or observer of the story (again, all sung) and his part morphs along with the story. It may be helpful to look at a Wikipedia page about Eva Peron first, to help you easily follow her life. Definitely use the subtitles. A filmed reaction may be difficult with copyright stuff because of all the music. Idk. She learned she was pregnant smack in the middle of filming. So yes, you'll hear her discuss motherhood extensively in all future interviews. And every single time they'll ask about the no TV rule 🙄 Very excited to enter this part of the journey. Evita and the album she makes next are, IMHO, her finest work.

The question should ge could Eva Peron have dealt with all the detractors that Madonna has? Madonna made the ‘Take a bow’ video as her “audition” for ‘Evita’. And it got her the role. I was skeptical of the movie not having any real spoken dialogue but now years later I feel like it was perfect as it was made.

regarding the ethnicity topic, lets not forget that Latinamerican is NOT and ethnicity, its a geographical denomination, and just like north americans, latinamericans can be white, in fact Eva Peron was white, she was of European descent, just like Madonna, in fact both of Southern European descent to be more specific

I know I’ve said it before but 1994 - 1998 is what I call Madonna’s ballad purgatory and I’m so glad it’s downhill from here. This is era is such a snoozefest for me. At least Ray of Light has a lot to offer but it’s gonna be until at least 1998 before we get back to fun Madonna.
