I was there at Blizzcon in 2017 (my first one live, came all the way from the UK!), I was sat about 15-20 feet from J.Allen Brack when he made the announcement. The hall erupted, whatever you heard on stream doesn't do it justice.

I wasn't there, and I'm definitely not the most passionate about vanilla WoW. But that announcement is right up there with Square Enix announcing the FF7 remake (FF7 being my all time favorite game). Something I had hoped would happen a few times over the years, but never actually expected to really happen. When this was announced... it was more emotional than I could understand why. I started playing at the end of TBC and release of WotLK, so this was a chance to experience a part of the game I had never experienced before. Still gives me major goosebumps to watch those announcements!

Raiding feels like you're being carried because most people are already geared because the server is 5 years old. The PvP server was an obvious flop when it was announced because most of the players aren't pvpers, the RP community left because the server got stale and is over on Epsilon. These videos are such a trip down memory lane, thank for making them. I played from Vanilla to WoTLK. With a brief return later. Honestly, I didn't like the Burning Crusade that much, the new gear with the new damage, made those vanilla players lose their lore somehow, it was so cool seeing someone walking around in full epics or even a full tier set. An inspiration to all the things you could do, even when reaching 60. Then the outland came and all of it was worthless pretty much. I do specifically remember being hyped about flying mounts in the Burning Crusade "WOW, I can fly ANYWHERE?" That was mind-breaking. But, after getting it and seeing how it influenced the world, did I realize that it was indeed one of those things I thought I wanted, but I didn't. It just killed the world. It felt empty. It was like a huge social aspect was removed when you didn't encounter other players walking around. Sure, no more ganking from hordes, but it started the arc of isolation in the game. I enjoyed some aspects of WoTLK, but the game wasn't the same. cross-realm Dungeon Grouping and PvP had just removed so much of the social aspect, and all these things stacked up. I quit. The community wasn't there, and only the most hardcore nerds were still playing. Still miss those days. Returning to vanilla much later just wasn't the same, the min-maxxing really sucked the joy out of the game for me, it just wasn't as magical when you knew what the best talents, races and builds were, where all the quests and secrets were located. Had some fun playing with old-schoolers but you could not mistake that every single aspect of the game had been organised and calculated, you didn't need to rely on others and if you were curious about someones playstyle or items, you'd just look it up. No point in trying out different builds as it all had been datamined and perfected through the years. Fucking nerds.

@The_Autistocrat5 ай бұрын
I used to post on the forums in NA and was one of the more vocal people even just defiantly namedropping Nostalrius and Elysium while I was berating the flaws of the then current (WoD-Legion) expansion. A game a lot of people really don't give credit to here is RuneScape and I'll tell you why. Jagex implemented something to the game called Bonds, players could buy these with real life money then sell them on the Grand Exchange for player gold, these could be used by players for subscription time. They were a massive hit for the game. Blizzard a couple years later announced the token doing the same thing. One difference though is that in RuneScape you as a free player can actually accrue the money to buy a bond and Jagex just enjoys the benefit. Blizzard actively nerfs gold farms to push the sales higher. However for those not in the know with RuneScape, they made a series of sweeping changes but the most divisive was in 2012 called the Evolution of Combat. They basically radically changed the way you did combat, including actual hotkeyed abilities... in fucking RUNESCAPE, THE CLICKER GAME. Needless to say this decision was just forced through despite player bitching, developers were very much convinced fans just needed to see it to understand it... If you want to know where this story ends, Old School RuneScape was subsequently released in a desperate bid and has supplanted RS3 (the original servers and game) in popularity. Jagex themselves and I believe specifically Mod Ash stated that OSRS is a long campaign of winning back player trust over EOC.

Memories from Brazil here, monthly subscription wasn't a affordable reality until Cataclysm, in my country. I used to play it on lan houses which used their own modified pirated version, we would play for hours doing the most unoptimized random shit, basically strolling around the game world asking each other what to do. I never felt the same joy after I started a subscription in Cataclysm. Even though I tried playing it with 2 friends after school, we always felt like something was telling us to do shit instead of having fun.

Awesome video! I remember getting a wow trial back in vanilla and enjoyed it a lot. I remember being slightly scared of the Wandering Protectors in Ashenvale and overall having a great time playing. I then decided to play some more and spent a lot of my time leveling up in Westfall with a subscription and from I don't know how long, I ended up swimming up and down the Stranglethorn Vale fishing for the iron and mithril-bound trunks. It was MY way of playing the game and MY way of earning my own pocket of gold. Fast forward I joined a guild, got slapped by a ghost in Karazhan that aggroed and killed the whole guild, then I joined another guild in the Lich King expansion, got the turtle mount, Arthas blade and that was all she wrote. LK was the peak for me and vanilla was the womb that gave birth to some fantastic experiences!

So much so, that I only managed to level just ONE toon, and simply levelled all my other high level toons to 85! So it was a VERY mixed bag! And even now it's been re-released as a Classic relaunch... I jumped in once, drooled at the VERY nice looking graphics... And then promptly jumped back into good ole Vanilla Hardcore! Mostly you couldn't even feel the lag, and when you did it was mostly like all the sudden the enemy was dead, or all the sudden you're fighting 2 mobs instead of 1 etc it was good enough for me and I fucking loved it. Beautiful story telling. Enjoyed from start to end. I could watch you saying I told you so over and over again and it makes me smile inside every time. Truth hurts.

This was a great and informative video on the events around Classic WoW. I was there when it first started, being young and not having disposable income or stable internet connection at home for the monthly subscription meant that I was going on private servers when visiting friends which probably ran the leaked alpha version at the time. I recall it being a buggy, laggy mess but damn did it have charm... And when I eventually started playing retail off and on again I also felt the decline in focus, charm and character with each expansion. It was a shame to see a once great game studio go down like this. As for the origin story, I think you could have spent a little more time on Warcraft 3 since it hardly got a mention, but the Warcraft 3 TFT expansion started off with the Rexxar campaign which many consider a prelude to what WoW would eventually become.

In vanilla, I had a guildie that talked about how he expected to play WoW for 10 years, I scoffed at that, saying i'd probably play for another year before I moved on. Well here we are almost 20 years later, and im playing classic again, with a full bis priest and two other 60's. I guess that guy was right more so than I was in our predictions😂

The fact that Blizzard was more focused on being more casual in 1999 with WoW than most hardcore MMOs (EQ, you die, you die) still proves to this day they want a Casual game. Solo Dungeons, Solo Content, Easy to pick up, etc. I'm a little drunky-drunk but like they wanted a casual game then, they have one now tbh. I like the Classic relaunches too. Game has been apart of my life since 2007. I remember seeing the Cata BlizzCon announcement vividly, one I will not forget -- up there with the Dragonflight announcement.

Seems like you may have missed a huge element of what brought back Vanilla WoW before the meeting at the Blizzard offices with former Nostalrius owners. One of the original WoW devs, Mark Kern hand delivered a petition to Mike Morhaime signed by 279,000 Vanilla players. You can see this in the video titled "Open Letter to Blizzard Entertainment from Mark Kern".

"What If" series. People would love it!!! Seriously, that would be an epic series, and I don't think anyone has done it in capacity yet.

I never liked MMO's was always an FPS player until one day I decided: "You know what? Let me try this WoW private server, it's free anyways". So I did... and I absolutely fell in love with this game. Even though I was never even a fantasy fan like LoTR or anything of the likes, but for some reason... this game just captured me like no other and I continue to only play Vanilla til this day. I really hope it sticks around forever. Truly a masterpiece.

It's kind of funny that the 2 most popular games of all time started out the same way.Dungeons and dragons Was also adapted from a game where you commanded large armies and then turned into commanding , just one person

I cant get enough of the story about the monotonous adonis who has forseen the future and up to this day can quote himself and telling the others that he told them so! I love it every single time it´s in your videos

RIP nostalrius what an amazing wow experience that server was. I was shocked when they announced classic at blizzcon and hilarious to think how few servers they had planned originally. I played on stalagg and it was crazy to experience that 2019 launch

I'm always chasing the feeling of wonder and immersion that I got from leveling my first toon during BC. 2019 vanilla is the closest I've gotten. I feel like I missed SoD, but will maybe catch the next one.

Even to this day when I hear the "...your favorite flavor is vanilla!" I get goosebumps. That classic announcement was so epic.
