It’s so weird seeing someone do the quests in this fashion, where they go around the world and try to start every quest they encounter. Normally in OSRS, people will very intentional with questing, where they pick one, specific quest to tackle at a time for a particular reason - a reward, a pre-requisite to another quest, etc. This feels more like how you’d play a solo RPG like The Witcher or the Elder Scrolls, where there’s a notice board or you just talk to every NPC in the town.

As a dumb kid, I thought the quest marker not only meant new quests but also the general area for other quests. So I ended up starting a bunch of quests trying to complete some other quests. Eventually I went to Gnome Stronghold, ended up starting Grand Tree, got put onto the glider to Karamja, panicked when I was attacked by Jogres, ran around like a headless chicken, ended in central Karamja, attacked by Tribesmen, poisoned, died and lost part of my addy and a bunch of other things. Really wanted to quit right there and then.

I did this in WoW. No matter how long or grindy the quest, even if the quest was grey and gave worthless reward. Because there is a story, a journey, other players and random things along the way. Optimising the fun out of an MMORPG is the saddest thing about becoming a veteran player.

Please please please please PLEASE!!!! Friend who is reading this for MadSeason: Tell him it's okay to use the Wiki for quests and clues and all. Or at the very least to click on the Quest tag in game! It's naturally in the game and does EXACTLY what he's asking for (requirements listed for quests). I cannot underpin how underdeveloped and misled the idea of playing this game with "No guides" is. I respect artificial limits, but there are many aspects of this game that require a guide. Not only is he making things infinitely worse for himself - but a lot of it just isn't good content. It's not good content to see he can't do clues because he doesn't have NPC name knowledge to uncode anagrams. It's not good content to watch him struggle to do a quest that should take 5 minutes. The increased views are from the OSRS community being happy a large WoW creater is giving the game a shot - it's not because of the artificial challenge set in place. There's plenty challenge in RuneScape to begin with. This is not a well-set limit and he needs to reevaluate. I cannot imagine he ran this by anyone who plays OSRS who didn't immediately tell him it'd be entertaining to a degree but ultimately not a good idea. Love the content - just it could and should be so much better. The hook isn't "Guy struggles through RuneScape" - it's "WoW guy plays RuneScape". Doesn't mean you have to do everything by the guides - just use the Wiki. Research into all the intricacies of the game is part of the fun and it IS mandatory. Edit: To add, before the days of the Wiki, back in the early-late 2000s - we used guides. Zybez and RuneHQ were prominent guide websites that were in heavy use. The game has never NOT had a prominent guide scene. It is now developed with guides in mind. It makes sense for a WoW player to not use WoWHead, but it does not make sense for a RuneScape player to not use some form of guide...
@jabba2582 күн бұрын
I heavily disagree. The reason he's not completing Goblin Village in 5 mins is the exact reason I'm watching. I'm down to have his friend help him get unstuck before he considers quitting or whenever he gets so frustrated with something that he gets close to burning out of the series. but he should not refer to the wiki himself and only get as little help as he can
@JohnD452 күн бұрын
@ Its cute for a quest like Goblin Village. Will it be cute for Underground Pass? ME Part 2? Will it be cute that he'll have to drop every clue cus he can't figure out the anagrams? I get what you're saying but it's just never the way the game was intended to be played - and he's not playing the game for the challenge - he's trying to play it blind, like people would back in the day. But people back in the day used quest guides. They used leveling guides. Very, VERY few players play like he is now. It's not the authentic experience - it's what he THINKS is the authentic experience, and he knows too little about the culture to know better. If he wants to do the challenge above giving the game a fair shake, that's fine, but it irked me the first video and it irks me this video that he's passing criticism about the game as if the devs screwed up when it's really just his lack of knowledge. That's not charming to me and if the series continues like this I think it'll have a niche audience but not a sizeable one. I don't want him looking up everything but there are some carveouts that need to happen, otherwise Underground Pass, One Big Favor, etc are all going to be 30 minute episodes. Hell - dude won't even know about 1/2 the content in the game. How's he going to find out about DKs? How's he going to find out about the Chaos Altar? Varlamore bone shards? And I'll have to sit here and listen to "well it just feels like prayer is a really underbaked skill in this game, impossible to train". That's no bueno.
@jabba258Күн бұрын
@@JohnD45 it will certainly be unique and interesting. And as I already stated: if ever he gets completely roadblocked he can always start taking help then. Doing it now would just be plain boring and giving up. Plus I‘m certain that Underground Passis absolutely doable for him! (havent seen MEP2 in a while, but isnt it just the Puzzle? That‘s doable..) It‘ll take some grit and nerves, but absolutely doable with a Limpwurt sort of determination (which is rare and I do accept that not everybody can do that). I do however see an absolute deadend once we get to the modern Endgame-Quests. There‘s no way SOTE and DS2 are doable for him. Also, just to clarify the Clues: For the one he‘s stuck on now he could get easy help from the Quest-NPC. Later clues of that kind might be harder, but they are no absolute requirement. He wont try to grind ranger boots as he doesnt know they exist anyways.. so no need for clues.
@jabba258Күн бұрын
I do see the point of giving it an Oldschool „authentic“ vibe, wherein using guides was normal back then. I do somewhat agree on that, but you forget how many kids spent hundreds of hrs just running around absolutely clueless (if you knew how proud I was when I managed to buy and wear a full heraldic BLACK armour kit..😂). You dont get that experience with any sort of guides. also the meta has changed so hard since then that you just cant compare the guides that existed back then with the wiki today. Safespots were well less known, prayer flicking did not exist, progression over all was so much slower (looking at wintertod-meta) etc.
@JohnD45Күн бұрын
@@jabba258 Not many did. Because they hit a quest they couldn't figure out and had to learn about Zybez or RuneHQ. I was one of those kids. The only thing we bumbled through was skills, but we certainly weren't getting through harder quests unguided. But in any case, you should ask yourself "who is that for?" when looking at this. The OSRS crowd is intrigued that he's a WoW player trying to game, not that he's doing a unique challenge. We want him to enjoy the game for what it is, because ironman is eye-opening alone. Are some around for the challenge? Sure. But it's more frustrating and naïeve a challenge than it is entertaining. So who is this for? The WoW crowd who hasn't tried it just like him? Those who watch him but don't play either? I don't think those are sustainable crowds. I'm happy to be proven wrong but we're already seeing plateauing viewership numbers. A bit too soon to call that, but I see writing on the wall. So that's my whole point. This serves a niche audience. I'd much rather see him experience the game for the gem it is and use some guides than to misrepresent the game at the most crucial moments for his series and turn people off because the entertainment is in ignorance of the content - not the content itself. But we'll see

I've been doing some OSRS questing last few days, did about 20... even some of the ones classified "Novice", I don't know how you'd figure them out without a guide. The things you need to figure out sometimes are just so random, it'd take you months if not years.

his experience with goblin diplomacy was my first experience with Fremminik trials. that quest took me 5 hours to beat as a kid.

Honestly appreciate this series. Honestly want to see his verdict when he gets quest cape and to see if he will continue into end game.

If you’re looking for a game that logs objectives as the character writing down things and doesn’t hold your hand I recommend Outer Wilds!

Only time I ever played Runescape was from the school computers when I should have been doing my work... I only played RS because I couldn't log into WoW, but it was fun, no regrets. 😂👍

the coincidence of mentioning lithuanians right after showing dovy is immaculate

I know you probably won’t read this but the rewards for Demon Slayer are 3 quest points, Silverlight and Demon Slayer is a prerequisite for a few other great quests!

This was by far the best runescape video I have ever seen! Especially that part around 1:50. Who knew!

It’s crazy to me that I played WoW and RuneScape in the same few years. RuneScape at school, WoW at home

The vampire and demon slaying quest I felt like were much harder when I was a noob playing the starter gear they give you is a bit OP

The knight's name, Sir Prysin, is pronounced Surprising. Many (not sure what %, probably most of them) of the names that start with the title Sir will be puns, so keep an eye out for them.

Slayer tasks are great for training combat and you unlock slayer monsters that have special drops

You might want to deposit your armor when running around a bunch. It's heavy, and it -does- weigh you down.

Played Runescape a year after it releases (Runescape 2 released in 2004), then kind of switched back and forth between WoW/Runescape when TBC launched. I played OSRS when it came out just to see how the game felt as an adult and not some kid merching in Varrock bank. Imo, no mmo comes close to Runescape and none ever will. I quit not because I hated the game, but because I liked it.
