It's April 5th, 2024.... 22 years ago today , Layne Staley left this world. He knew he was at the end of his life, and believed there was no turning back. He didn't want to die. He certainly didn't want to die alone, even begged the last person who saw him alive not to leave him alone. Layne's body wasn't discovered until 2 weeks after he succumbed to a speedball overdose, and it was his own mother who found him. May he have finally found the peace he couldn't find while alive. [..... your voice still echoes, Layne 🎶]

Layne is really the best singer ever. This tender, gentle voice here is so warm and full. In contrast to his beast mode stuff, which is equally amazing. And the lyrics. Calming. Heavy heart. What an incredible human. Rest in power, dude. Wow.

Miss him so much and never met him. Seeing him here, he is not beyond the point of recovery. It’s the turning point just before he cannot be helped. In only a year, he was almost gone. He warms my heart with his voice, brings tears to my eyes, makes me miss my childhood and the simpler life we had. I love this song. It’s my favorite song in the world.

Layne is very present in this video - his eyes are open, he is looking around and not hanging onto the microphone stand for dear life. Love it! In a lot of other videos his eyes are closed for the whole song, he is clutching the microphone stand for support and his voice lacks strength - he looks so sick. Hoping that this gentle guy has found peace and solace.

You're probably right. The idea behind getting Layne into the band was to give him the opportunity to play in a sober environment. Mike McCready spoke about it with Barrett Martin. They also gave other musicians the same opportunity. John Baker Saunders also played with them at the same time as Layne - he also passed away. @@withmygoodeyeclosed

His weight looks a little better and his hair is up - I know that sounds like a tiny thing but once he started using again he started to inject on his forehead because he was so hard pressed for good veins, and after this he almost always had his hair down to cover it, kind of like how he always wore fingerless black gloves from this time period onward to cover up the marks on his knuckles. There's such a huge difference between how he looks here and how he'd look in the videos from the self-titled album, let alone how he looked on Unplugged. This was probably the last chance for him to get clean and make it out healthy - once he started using again this time, the bottom fell out for his body very, very fast.

@@jimday8426 Thank you for asking! Hopefully you're ready for a longish reply because oh boy, have I got a story for you. Believe it or not, I completely forgot that I wrote this comment. Things have changed so much since then. Nine months ago I went through one of the darkest periods of my life, I was contemplating, as Stephen Fry nicely put it, a futureless future. Unemployed, mental health issues, living in a country that chases away its young people, and on top of that the relationship that was my only hope started to fall apart due to some real difficulties that became insurmountable. I was grieving a life that never existed, a could have been life. Now, are you ready for this? It gets really tense. Somewhere around the time I realized that my relationship had no future I get a message from a person I haven't heard from in ages, but who I've known for a decade & who was at one point very close & dear to me. For some reason we lost touch, probably because we were both young & didn't really know what we wanted. So we started talking again, he's always the one who initiates these conversations. Then he says, We should rent something together, meaning that I have to move from one city to another, leave my family & friends and move to a completely unfamiliar place. He was persistent, but not pushy. Eventually, I said yes. It's been almost three months since we've moved in together & I can honestly say that I often think to myself, I'm glad I didn't kill myself when I wanted to. To anyone who is going through this: You are not alone & please stick around for a bit.

95 was right around the time I "got turned on to" grunge music. Kurt had passed, but I bought a shirt with his face on it. I was a sophomore. It kind of changed my friend group... from the "hicks" and cowboys and many years of mostly country music and popular radio. Grunge won my heart ❤

I still have a vintage shirt from Alice in Chains... probably from the Spencer's in our mall. It's the dark blue one with the noosed teddybear. It even survived a house fire in 2013 ❤

I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!

Dudes voice is just incredibly a 1 of a kind! Then how his lyrics were so dark in a real-life knowingly aware of his decisions into darkness are unique as well. One of the saddest stories in that era and genre of music.

Layne looked a little intense when he was sober. Despite all his work with AIC, I believe Mad Season is where Layne really expressed how he was feeling with tracks like this, above, I don't know anything, alone, etc. Thanks for all the good music. Best voice in all of rock!

U know.. it hurts me too. There are a lot of musicians who have died young, but they did not seem to suffer like Layne did. That's why it hurts so bad i think. He suffered for 10 years. The others just had a great time then just plopped over. I think that's why so many people say that his death was so different and hurt so bad. I'm a tough guy. But whenever i hear this song, i have to make sure no one is around and i go to my bedroom and listen to it in private because it hurts too bad..

@@bigsky3072 yeh ur right. Way he suffered and way he died was so terrible and really breaks my heart. I still tear up whenever I watch his videos and interviews. Wish things could have been different for him. But addiction is hard to beat
