Mae West is amazing!!!! Her birthdate is debatable though. She notoriously lied. And she DID save paramount. She saved the entire movie industry. She asked what the top exec was being paid before she agreed to contract. She said she needed to be paid more than the highest paid exec. The community loved her. She was arrested for her play Sex, but didn't spending of her sentence in jail because the jailers wife loved her and tbey would take her out every night. Life bests were nicknamed Mae Wests during WW2. And she discovered Cary Grant. He had just lost his contract with the film industry and she saw him walking through the studio on his way out, she pointed him out from her limo, said he's going to be my leading man, and the rest is history. There is so much about her that is amazing.

I had a quick look at Wiki to clarify my thoughts, but I did see that Mae West's liking for the Max Factor "make up" was well in line with other actresses. His products were initially meant only for professional theatre, film and TV, but they were just so darn good, actresses wanted to use the stuff for everyday wear as well. The company had no choice but to come up with a line of products for performers to wear in their everyday life, and then for all women who wished to emulate them. Max Factor did a lot of hands on work with the actresses, doing specialized facial charts for them to follow. Personal attention, and training in the correct way to artfully display their faces to best effect would have cemented the actresses devotion to the brand. No wonder Mae West kept using the PanStik and face powder. He would have taught her how to properly apply them AND how to use the eye shadows. I thik he would have told her what I had to learn myself; a light application, properly applied, is much more attractive and anti aging than than slathering on thick layers of gunk.

Mae actually was making her own stage makeup before Max Factor had started on actresses. He certainly was a genius! He had his shop on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard for decades. There was a room for Blondes, another for Brunettes, and a third for Redheads! He also was the one who decided Lucille Ball should be a redhead! She loved him too and was the makeup man for I Love Lucy in the beginning.

An interesting part about her life that not a lot of people know is that she was a Spiritualist. Many summers from the 1930s on, she made the long trip to the Spiritualist community of Lily Dale in Western NY State. She had regular readings from her favorite medium, Jack Kelly. Those two raised the funds to build the Healing Temple. In fact there's a photograph of the two of them near it. She was a very interesting woman.

On a few of my return trips to Los Angeles (after moving away) I stayed a few nights in Hollywood, and one day I walked over to the Max Factor Building and took a leisurely stroll through. I was astounded when, in his mint green room for redheads I wondered who the actress in one portrait on a countertop was -- and then it moved! It was my own reflection in a mirror! I have never looked that good EVER, and all I was doing was standing in his room intended to best showcase people with my hair color! So after that I would tell people: "If I ever need to be made up, Rimmel can do my lips, but Max Factor gets everything else." At least until Max Factor pulled out of the U.S. market. I grabbed a few last double-ended mascaras -- cocoa brown at one end and gold at the other -- at the "Mart of K" before it all disappeared. As for les parfums, I tried Joy briefly in the 1990s, and it smelled just awful on me. But that's just me. (ANYTHING by Yves Saint Laurent, however ... magic!}

Marjorie Margel you are so right girl! I read in a Cary Grant biography that he was struggling trying to make it and he gave total credit to Mae for paving his way to making it big. I read that when Mae passed away her apartment was frozen in time. All decor was 1920’s-1930’s and people assumed she died broke which was far from the truth. She was smart with investments and her money. She truly is in a class all her own!

Hello Laura! I was wondering if you could make a video on vintage drugstore perfumes. Things like Jontue by Revlon, Emeraude by Coty, White Shoulders and Cabochard by Gres are a few that come to mind that I would love to hear your thoughts on. I love this series that you are doing on the ladies. I would say maybe Jane Birkin next but I'm not sure she has revealed much of her beauty products though I know she launched a perfume with Miller Harris.

I love your videos! Mae West was a force! she has a funny bit that she would say on talk shows about what she did to get her diamonds, which West was known for. That little gal had impeccable taste in jewelry, I love your earrings you shared by way. If you haven't done one yet, I'd love to see one for Lucille Ball. I recently dyed my hair red. I read somewhere that some Sheik or Arabian Prince kept Ball in a lifetime supply of henna in a special secret color for the rest of her life, he adored the shade of her hair so much! 💕

I used to wear Max Factor pancake makeup as a child! Holy cow that stuff was thick! I’m not sure what I was covering up because I had no wrinkles like I do now😂

The Emerson Radio Corp. actually designed radios that looked like the costumes Mae West wore. Life Jackets were also known as a "Mae West" during World War II.

I have always been fascinated by the movie stars of the golden age of cinema. I love max factor products. Why? It was endorsed by the stars back then therefore good enough today. Thank you so much for this channel xx.

Jennifer Devlin Well, Max Factor was a real person you know way back in the early Twenties onward. The used to be his make up and beauty store on Hollywood Blvd. it’s gone now, was a museum for a time shut down in the late Eighties or early Nineties. Laura, you would have loved it! There were three private makeup suites, One for Blondes, Brunette and Redheads. He was the one that told Lucille Ball to go with Red Hair for her career. Changed her life! It was open to everyone back then, but the stars had private appts back then.

I know he was a real person. At least one of his descendants set up Smashbox Cosmetics. I am from the UK and have never been to the USA but I have an enthusiastic interest in history of a mixture of genres. Thanks for the information.
