Today, I am checking out Fort Amsterdam in Ambon. It's been on my list of places that I really wanted to check out in Ambon. The difficult part has just been finding a way to get out there because it's pretty far from the center of town where I'm staying. Luckily, I was able to meet the right people in my hotel, a group from the Maluku Tourist Office, and they were able to meet me and give me an incredible tour of the fort. Fort Amsterdam is one of the first forts built in the Maluku Islands, it's been renovated over the years though. It was such a great experience. Especially because I got to meet the fort keeper who has been on the job for 38 years! He has so much knowledge of the fort and I was lucky enough to have him there and pick his brain. Before heading to the fort though, I met up with the group for lunch at a Padang restaurant.
I want to give a special thanks to the Maluku Tourist Office for meeting me and giving me this opportunity. It was such a pleasure meeting all of you. And another special thanks to Ai for translating everything for me!
There will be a part 2 of this video where they take me to the oldest mosque and church ever built in Indonesia, so stay tuned for that....

The fort is usually a building to protect the locals. It has a symbolic meaning of safety. I didn't expect it to be a warehouse! Great to hear the old story of Fort Amsterdam, really thanks to the king who decided to help the Portuguese! Thanks also to the Maluku Tourist Office, Ali, the fort keeper for helping, and of course Nick for sharing! 👍😃🙌

You're welcome, thanks for watching right, I'm sure it looks completely different from when it was originally built in the 1500s though. I think the fort was later built by the Dutch in the 1600s

In 1984, IDR 15,000 were equivalent to USD 15, I believe that was still underpaid back then, but maybe just enough if you were super tight with budget, single man with free housing, and partially sourcing food from the nature. Thanks God, he is now officially a civil servant, so he deserves monthly pension when he retire.

In 1986, 1 US dollar = 1,664 Rupiah. If his salary was 15,000 Rupiah per month in 1986, that would be about 9 US dollars at that time. But Ambon in 1986, 100 rupiahs could buy meatballs and 50 rupiahs could buy yellow rice.

Thanks Ambon Tourism office and pleasant vlog Nick, prolly after these "blip years", most tourism board in every touristy province in Indonesia would like to help you better, rather than sitting at their office on their day job. The building cannot speaks for itself, however having a guide will helps us build the imaginative time travelling experience...

By percuma anda muroh muntuk menjelaskan. Percayalah biarkan mereka melihat dan memeriksanya itu Damai untuk kedua belah pihak Menangis bukan berarti bersedih Tertawa bukan berarti bahagia

The different between "nasi padang" and " Nasi campur" is : "Nasi campur" is the way you mixed all the food, actually its an Indonesian way, in Java its often called "nasi rames" but in many place they dont have named on it that just usual way of Indonesian eat meal, mixed it all up "nasi Padang is originated from Padang in west Sumatra known as their unique flavour, you mixed the rice or not it still called nasi Padang anyway.

Very good content, Maluku government should open more and give the students and people or some office or organization to travel/visit around their own province and historical places or tourist spots to boost the economy of people around there. All the best Maluku. Oh ya Nick from there you can go to NTT ; Timor island and around ,not Timor Leste because it's already separate from Indonesia but you still can visit it if you want. You go to Kupang there's Benteng/fortress from colonial times which is now Army base or you go to cave in TTU or TTS or go to Halelulik or just visit but it's long journey there's some history but it's to far for you. Maybe you go to Kupang and then go to Sumba ,Rote,Alor, Sumbawa oh man that's a lot huh 😅. Well wait for your next video
