Again, another good example of making jigs & tools to make life easier & to produce a quicker & better outcome. I made my own winder too as it certainly makes it easier than twisting the bow to wind the wire on (as I've seen others do). I have found the masking tape to go rather tacky over time when I've taken it off other bows (from known current bow makers 'downunder') so I prefer to cut plain paper & glue it on with white glue instead. I usually just use white glue for the leather too but have tried the starting edge with superglue out of frustration with the leather not staying put in its starting position (it works OK when gluing onto plain paper). I usually use a 15mm Swiss steel knife to chamfer the leather but that razorblade idea looks quite effective. If I'm doing my own bow I have been known to continue the wire the full length under the leather, but silver wire costs, so I wouldn't do that normally for others (& if being particular about balancing the bow).

Hello Wouter. The silver and leather part are there to protect the wood of the bow. As you know the leather part is where your thumb goes and the silver is for the rest of the finger (approximately!).

Say this was a new bow that had never been wound before, or you didn't have wire of equal denisty to the one on the bow originally, how would you work out the amount of winding needed to balance the bow? I imagine you could also change the balance significantly by continuing the winding all the way under the leather or use a different density or thickness of wire? I always find this tricky, especially trying to predict the final weight of the bow when the hair is missing. That's one reason why I rarely dare to touch a bow mysself...
@maestrokimon
@maestrokimon 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Tobias. The weight of the wire is a very small portion of the weight of the bow. Threading one centimetre more or less won't change the balance significantly especially because it is weight added to the side where you keep the bow with your hand. Adding weight to the tip has a much bigger effect. The thickness of the wire varies between 0,2mm and 0,3mm, that 0,1mm more is also not significant enough in my opinion.

Why do we need silver winding? Wouldn't a plastic material be more protective and give better grip?
@maestrokimon
@maestrokimon 3 жыл бұрын
There is also plastic winding but it is more of an aesthetic mater that protection or grip.
@Deluge4000
@Deluge4000 3 жыл бұрын
Thick (2mm) plasitic windings exist as 'imitation whalebone'. Vinyl is common on cheaper thumb grips, but does not last as long as leather. Some silver windings come with a protective layer of clear tape to slow the speed at which the silver tarnishes. Silver is much heavier than plastic, so plays a role in the weight, balance and 'feel' of the bow.

For example, there are plastic and wooden violins. Also an Original KFC and a faked product. Why not choose a plastic violin which is more durable And cheap fake KFC when a real violin is very sensitive And real KFC is tastier and more expensive? We're talking about authenticity, Quality, Beauty, and what is desired. Not just functions, cheap cost, and copies. VSO is not permitted here

You should clean the silver wire with steel wool before it wraps around the bow stick. It'll look cleaner. Sure you cleaned it up but it still looks kinda dirty. Also, you didn't go into taking into account weight and balance of the bow when deciding the length of the winding. Probably because it's too complicated for youtube. Gonna teach a whole bunch of Grandpa Guarneris how to mess up their bows 😬

In my opinion, the end of leather is too close to the frog. 6 mm distance should be better. So that the thumb will never touch the leather.
@maestrokimon
@maestrokimon 11 ай бұрын
The thumb should always toch the leather! The leather is there to protect the wood! Otherwise, the wood gets used and damaged.
@lgyqchen5074
@lgyqchen5074 11 ай бұрын
@@maestrokimon Actually when the bow is tightened, there will be a space between the end of leather and the frog. So, the thumb will always touch the wood stick, rather than only touch the leather. I believe the point finger should rest on the leather, rather than on the metal threads. Therefore, there should be enough space between the leather and the frog.
@maestrokimon
@maestrokimon 11 ай бұрын
It definitely is for the thumb as well. I have seen bows with a used leather where the nail had caused significant damage to the wood of the bow. And once there is a groove at that point, you can't repair it anymore, and the bow loses its value.
