We never performed this while I was under clausen’s direction, but I LOVE this video. It captures his nudges. His flicks. His winks. All the non-verbal yet not at all “official choir directing techniques” ways he communicated with us. He is a fish in water. He has taught us to understand his moves. He’s is DANCING, and his joy is palpable. It’s a reciprocal loop of MAKING music. He would nudge and we’d remember the dozens of times he reminded us of something (likely with a multi-layered effect, so we could know where we were in the piece AND the intonation AND pronunciation AND emotional landmarks. He was a master of music, and my first regret of leaving the BM.M.ed program was that I never got to take a course where he could teach me his ways. I don’t think I could be more proud of having sung under him if anyone paid me.😂

We are going to sing this in a TTBB arrangement, maybe I am biased but after listening to about 10 different performances, the two that stuck with me are from Choral chameleon and from Cantus. This performance is great choral singing but I miss the feeling found in the other performances mentioned. As a singer myself, I would be proud to sing with Cantus and put in all the feeling that his song NEEDS. Still like the sound - but ...

This is more similar to Sweet Honey in the Rock’s version. I personally prefer Keali’i’s version though. When it comes to a song with such powerful lyrics, you don’t need 50 moving parts. It should have simple, a cappella harmonies and focus on the lyrics. The other parts (like the “sha-ka”) is distracting.
