@OjStudios4 жыл бұрын
Fair Play on the remake sucks in Classic mode. Car was easier to drive than in original game but in the remake the whole thing was so scripted.. Five tries and I got it, but it needs to be driven fully to make the last car in front of you to crash on the last turn. So stupid. I also hate how melee is a different button. At least in the classic mode it should be like in the original, holding bat, click to hit, select molotov, click to throw etc.
@jeanesseintes34514 жыл бұрын
@@autonomy.9463 I guess I will find out, I figured you must have played the version patched not long after the game came out which added the option for difficulty select ,negate damage to your vehicle and to skip the race, as it is a long race that basically a single crash will end any attempt if you play the unpatched version or set it up as it was initially designed to play, and I can't imagine this game daring to come anywhere near close to that.

There are actually side missions for Lucas, If you go to his Garage in certain parts of the game or the end of the story, various postcards unlock. You go to certain locations and you can find some new vehicles to keep and there are also some side missions if you find a bell near a payphone. PS: There's also a UFO mission ;) EDIT: I've posted this comment before going out and doing any of this (So I only watched this stuff happen) so I want to clarify a few things. 1. The side missions other than the postcards are actually activated by reading and finding notes around Salieri's Bar and then you need to go to the location mentioned in the note and find a ringing payphone and answer it, these missions can range from defending a truck to having car chase. 2. Lucas missions (postcards and secret vehicles) are activated at his garage of course and when you find the secret cars they are added to your collection. 3. You get rewards for doing the payphone note missions like golden weapons, cars, and also outfits.

The main problems I've had with the game are: 1: The way that they've made enemies very bullet sponge-y. Seriously, it's really immersion breaking to shoot a guy four times in the chest with a .45 and have them not even stumble back. Pistols are basically useless for anything but headshots. 2: The turret chase at the end of A Trip to the Country is really poorly optimised on classic difficulty. Your truck loses health faster than you can shoot at the turret, and it basically means that you have to keep redoing the same section over and over until you get lucky. I'm not even sure what I did differently to win, it just seems like random chance. Apart from that, it's a great game.

For those struggling with racing mission on classic difficulty, here's how I managed it: pressing ram button somehow gives you more control on tight turns. Just enough to make a turn at 40-50mph and quickly regain speed after. I discovered it accidently after a dozen tries, reassigned it to right click, and after a couple more tries managed to get into first position on first lap and stay there for the rest of the race. The worst corner is the first one one your 2nd and 3rd lap: there is a long straight stretch before it, so it's tempting to go pedal to the metal for it's entirety, but you need to slow down as you pass under a bridge right after start/finish line.

As a big fan of the original - i kind of hate how new models look and the cartoonish voices they gave to half of the cast. Why is Paulie, a suave gentleman in the original, now a fucking cartoon who you expect to say "this is a stick up, see?"? why is the average looking main character now chiseled like he's Clark Kent? Man, i wish GTA 5 would have had a "skip driving" option... I swear, between the "drive to mission start marker, drive to actual mission start where you pick up a character, drive to where mission actually happens, and then driving the character back home - about 80% of the game's runtime was the pre/post mission commute...

I think this is the first review you've done where I can't agree with any of your points. I feel like the remaster was fun, but it's far from what I had hoped for. The butchering of character's personalities (and oh god, the voice acting), gameplay elements, and storytelling feels like this is some kind of Netflix reboot. I guess I'm a purist, as you said. I played Mafia when I was 12 or 13, and found the story so engaging and full of depth. The difficulty of the gameplay due to the dated mechanics in 2002 were frustrating, but now show a certain charm that is far from present in shooters like this. This remaster holds your hand like a child lost in a grocery store the entire time, regardless if you're playing on "Classic" difficulty. They made it stupid easy. The "Normal" driving is nothing like the driving in Mafia, neither is "Simulation". Both feel like you're playing a sit-in arcade racing booth, but at least simulation allows you to oversteer and throw the car sideways. There's nothing more fun and comical than drifting a car made in the 30's with ease like you're Ken Block. What made Mafia so amazing in 2002 was how different, visceral, and difficult it was, and while this remaster was a blast, it fell flat on its face trying to appeal to the masses instead of staying true to the original. Things like having Ralphie showing you how to break into specific cars, not being able to see cops on the radar, having to abide by basic laws, interaction with NPC's, a lack of GPS (it's in the 1930's FFS!)... all of that is gone, making this just another GTA clone. Love your content as always, but I think your take on this is a little too mainstream, which is exactly what the publishers wanted. And btw - if you can't handle the race mission in the original or the remaster, I dunno what to say other than spend some time playing F1, GRID, or DIRT Rally, because it's seriously a cakewalk if you have any sense of how braking, under/oversteer and throttle control work.

@Mr Buzzkill I’d say the remake does the best it can do considering the original wasn’t a well refined video game and even the OG devs would admit it in passing. Video games should be difficult by merit not by dated/unrefined mechanics. The only way this remake would have been “casual” was if it added any unnecessary open world fluff similar to Mafia 3. Instead, it focuses on the narrative and expands upon the elements that might have been undercooked in the original.

1:45 Are you fuckin' high or what? Mafia 1 is objectively one of the greatest 3rd person shooting and driving games of all time that still holds well to this day, how can anyone think otherwise is beyond me. Not to mention it has a lot of strong and unique mechanics that makes games today look primitive in comparison such as: 1.Shell casings on the floor that make a different sound depending on the surface. 2.Reloading a weapon means losing any bullets left in the current clip. 3.Having an inventory system and being able to drop your weapons. 4.Enemies have limited ammo and react accordingly when getting shot. 5.Cops will chase you when speeding, crashing, passing through red lights, carrying a weapon. 6.Cool car features such as: turn signals, honking, gasoline, clutch, manual transmission, shoot out of the window.

I love when games give you this level of difficulty and feature customization. A lot of time I play games on the highest difficulty, but sometimes there's some aspect of that difficulty that's either BS or outright ruins the fun of the game. Fallout 4's survival mode for example. Most of what it adds is pretty good, but only being able to save on sleeping is balls, and absolutely no fast travel is kinda lame. So I downloaded a mod that adds auto save on area transition, allows you to manually save while you're in your own settlements, and allows you to fast travel between your settlements if you have a trade caravan set up between them. EYE Divine Cybermancy is another game that has solid difficulty customization.

I`ve considered myself a Mafia fan since the day when the original game was released and I still play it once in a year or so. It was a part of my childhood and we still quote some lines and jokes from the game with my best friends, that`s how big of an impact the game and it`s universe left on us. I was very excited and overwhelmed when I heard about the remake and after beating it 2 or 3 times on classic difficulty, here are my thoughts about it: First of all, I don`t like how Tommy was presented. In the remake he is way more cold blooded, scripted up Rambo style of a character, too much of a typical badass tough guy. In the original game he was way more "down to earth" and likable, but I think that`s the impact from the voice actor. I love new Salieri though, he seems right on spot, very well portrayed. Sam is also likable character, but Paulie is too much of a clown in a remake, I loved the old Paulie much better, there was that feeling like he`s unpredictable and a bit sick in the head, like Joe Pesci in GoodFellas. I understand why to a lot of people driving in old Mafia game was a pain in the arse and it really is in some ways crappy. Hardcore Mafia fans praise it because we just are so used to it and we are good at it. I love how heavy and slow vehicles feel in the original game, that adds a ton of realism, but hitting a fire hydrant and flying into an orbit afterwards is just a shitty game mechanic, though a hilariously funny one. The driving in the remake is polished up, maybe not so realistic, but way more enjoyable and suits up the game, while still packing some bits of "realism". The racing mission in the remake is great, we together with friends struggled to beat it on a classic difficulty for hours, so it still packs a lot of challenge. That was a lovely walk down a memory lane. Unfortunately, I can`t say anything good about the combat in the remake. It`s plain, new fashioned bullshit. The cover mechanic is basically cheating and makes the game way too easy. I`ve beaten the remake game without using cover mechanic, just basically hiding behind things to make it feel a bit more as an original game. The guns are a piece of arse. All of them. Especially Thompson and pump action. These are litarally super soakers (water guns - for my Eastern European homies :) ) and do zero damage. Good old 1911 is the only reasonably balanced weapon in the game. In the original game guns were 10x more enjoyable and realistic. I still remember tremendous kickback from the Thompson and how it was used only in single fire or "short, controlled bursts". :) Also, remember that Tommy is not an ex military, but a cabdriver, so his Stormtrooper level aim is a completely normal thing. The Lost Heaven itself - I love it in the original and I love it in the remake. In both games city feels alive, enjoyable and beautiful place to be. If we consider when the original game came out, the visuals of the world of Lost Heaven were 10x more beautiful and enjoyable than ones in the GTA3. It also shines in the remake and I love every single bit and detail of it. Overall, as a hardcore Mafia fan I can say that I`ve enjoyed the remake a lot. It doesn`t screw up our beloved storyline, it treats us with visuals that makes us smile in nostalgy, it adds up little goodies as great music, lovely cars, our beloved characters and it sums up as a really good game. As we with friends agreed, the remake felt like the original game when it came out in our childhood. Truly recommended.

Unfortunately, I disagree. Except for graphical fidelity, I feel like the definitive edition is a step back in almost every way. I hate the cover system, the way enemies get shot in the chest and don't even notice, and how you can only carry a single handgun and somehow never run out of ammo because...I guess random ammunition chests & enemies always having your type of ammo? It was interesting to have to juggle guns in the original when you run out of ammo. Also the map. Original had the best map system I've ever seen in any game. In the remake, it's practically useless since you have to pause the game for it. IMO the fact that enemies wait for their turn to punch you is not a good thing. Sure, the game is easier, but it's just ridiculous to me, dudes standing around watching me beat their friend to death. Also, why can't I run or crouch in a bunch of places or situations? why can't I jump unless theres a crate or something to jump onto? Why can't I take out my gun anywhere I want? game forces me to do what's best for the story, whether I want to at the moment or not. No free ride, fewer missions...At least give me the content that was in the original if you're not gonna give me more. If the original was a 10/10, this would be a 6/10. It's okay, better in graphics and storytelling, worse in every other possible way. I do recommend people to try the original, it's definitely more challenging, but if you're okay with that then it's a good experience.

@podrouzk4 жыл бұрын
You know why driving those cars was hard in the first Mafia? Because they were hard to drive. This game never was like the GTA series where you can literally fly with cars. The same thing with the combat. In the first Mafia you had to actually move constantly and punching the enemy one punch at the time. With this dumbed down american friendly combat you have to literally push a button six times and the enemy is down, no challenge at all. On the other hand the shooting is ridiculously hard even with the stupid cover system because the AI moves in the lightning fast speeds like a teleporter or something and sometimes literally jumps from place to place.

Just waiting for someone to do a remake of The Getaway 1 and 2 from the early PS2 years. The only real new inclusion would need to be newer vehicles and environments, after all it is 2020. The health system in that game is unique, as to regain health you lean on a wall and you slowly heal. However, if remade I don't think this mechanic should be as slow as it used to be and instead be used as a way of regaining a certain percentage of your health, rather than all of it. To regain full health, first aid kits would be a better option. This keeps difficulty extremely similar to the original getaway game. Yes I Know its a review for Mafia, but the getaway is about the same age as this particular game, its underrated in my opinion.
@mattmattmatt1313134 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That really is a unique game and one you don't often hear talked about much anymore. It did have some (for its time) excellent design elements, like the no HUD, the health regen, the cover system and the animations for all of it were pretty damn amazing. The animations and the accurate recreation of London alone are deserving of a proper modern remake. But the actual gameplay (unlike Mafia) was pretty bad. The driving was bad and the shooting was very clunky. That would require some serious work. But yeah if the game focused on smooth animations, fluid gameplay, and a detailed accurate depiction of London, it would be one of the greatest games in the modern era. (Personally I would still prefer it set in the early 00s, the car chases just give me that Ronin/gangster movie feeling, that I'm afraid would be lost in 2020 London.)
@fogfullofsilhouettes58424 жыл бұрын
@@mattmattmatt131313 thats a great point to be perfectly honest, being set in the early 2000's gives it a unique style that is not exactly featured in many games these days, so I'm all for it. The Thompson, like any other firearm, was about as accurate as it's operator. The recoil was even less than some 9mm submachine guns despite it being a 45 acp due to it's 10 pound weight and also if it was equipped with the very effective Cutts Compensator on the muzzle (which is on the in-game version of the gun). The early models such as the Colt manufactured 1921 model and the West Hurley 1928s had adjustable sights and in skilled hands could hit a man at 200 yards. I waited until the game released, immediately installed it and beat it in one sitting, on Classic Mode, Fair Play probably took me 3 or more hours, it's so much harder than it was in the original, the main reason it's harder though is because of the AI, they suck you into their wheels and spin you out, or gain impossible speeds in a second if you start coming first. I loved everything else in this game. The only reason I stopped playing after beating the game was because I fell asleep. I'm just about to 100% the game. I first thought the Remake was an 8.5 because of the minor but very strange bugs I encountered, side quests being removed and the Fair Play mission being impossibly hard now. I think it's maybe even a 9 now. This game doesn't get boring to me, it's so amazing. The only thing I really don't like is the DRM, Denuvo, it suprisingly hasn't killed my FPS, it's still a smooth 60 FPS, but there were times where it went down to the 50s, sometimes even 40s. I also didn't like some of the voice changes, Salieri especially, in the original he sounded like a tough guy you wouldn't mess with, a don, but the new guy, where I grew on to him, it's just not as good as the original guy.
