They're funding model is different from corporate run media outlets. Instead of the owners, who are often billionaires and millionaires themselves, or the world's largest corporations funding them through advertising or direct funding, Independent Media outlets get their money through subscriptions, sales of stuff, or donations. It's a different funding model.
