Mage Knight Solo: Arythea Doubles Up! (City Levels 5-5)

In this episode of Solo Playthroughs, Greg presents a playthrough of Mage Knight with his first ever game of Solo Conquest Blitz using two Core City Tiles! While normally playing the Blitz scenario with only one city (Megapo-blitz, anyone?), it turns out there are two ways to play Solo Conquest Blitz. And the second one has the player finding and conquering two cities in 4 Rounds. Our mage for today is Arythea, who's wound-using skills and mana manipulation abilities give her a formidable arsenal of weapons at her disposal as she marches across the countryside, growing her reputation (or her infamy!) and gaining fame. Watch to see if the mighty Arythea can take on two Level 5 cities and emerge victorious!

52:54 slight efficiency advice, you can use the freshly acquired wounds to grant you red mana already for use with rage. this helps your cycling.

Good call on both accounts! Between Invocation and Power of Pain, it's amazing what Arythea can do to cycle wounds and get mana. :)

I got excited by the initial tile setup plus hand, with a bunch of move cards and a forest with split crystals next to a mage tower. Then I saw the lackluster spell offer and felt kind of thwarted. THEN you moved to the monastery and I realized I have a bias toward spells and preserving my reputation in the early game, because I'm pretty sure the monastery would have been the better move even if the spells were solid. Hey, do you think this would still be the right move in a full, six-round solo game?

Hey ragnar! I'm usually fine with the -3 to reputation early, giving me time to hunt down some rampaging enemies before the core tiles get out. But it always depends with this game and what my other options are. IMO, the ability to choose an artifact from two random ones pulled from the deck (plus the fame infusion from defeating the enemy) is a good tradeoff for that -3! :)

Maybe I missed it but it doesn't look like you pick up a gold mana token at any time you start your turn on a magical glade.

Yeah - once you know how to keep the pace up, the Blitz scenarios become a lot easier to manage, and that generally takes a lot of experience with the game. :)

@@SoloPlaythroughs blitz is... a bit more feeble, a lot can go very right or very wrong much more easy than the full 6-round conquest. now, this of course does not mean that we cannot find ways to lose any scenario in a spectacular fashion, does it? XD

Of course not! Crazy thing is how many things worked against me in this one between iffy offers, a terrible Source, and a fast-paced dummy player. But Arythea's skills are that strong. Not sure I would have been able to beat this if they same things happened against a Megapo-blitz!

So after watching this, I was wondering - can I get a 5+8 blitz conquest to work. And, apparently, I can! Was veeeery tight, though, my score would have been trash XD

@@SoloPlaythroughs you did not indeed. would have probably made some of the mid-game a bit easier + likely changed your thoughts on needing to find extra enemies for the 6-card handsize. but alas, it did not matter for once. :)

Not sure! I have an older version and those cards took an absolute beating well before I finally felt the need to sleeve everything. But I wouldn’t be surprised if WizKids went with cheaper cards with later printings. I played UE with a friend’s copy and he sleeved his cards already. 🙂

@@KevinSpecialK Yeah - it would make sense. Mage Knight is one of the few games of which I would strongly consider buying a true deluxe edition if one ever became available! But the sad reality is that I would be unlikely to trust one produced by WizKids.

@Solo Playthroughs yeah, I never had it come up yet, and as you mentioned on your episode about her card, it got me thinking. Thanks, you probably saved me hours of research. Hehehe. I wish they would come out with a second edition with better minis. My new ultimate edition has a ton of discoloration; they are replacing the bad tokens, but it is rather unfortunate to wait 3 month for it and not get a perfect copy.. Am I asking too much.. 😤

Any time! And the UE is great in the sense that it opened up Mage Knight to a lot more players. But what a disappointment that WizKids didn’t do anything to improve on the minis and other parts of the production that could have used some “deluxe” treatment. My friend owns the UE and the paint job on his minis is pretty bad, too. I was originally interested in getting a nicer version of Mage Knight for myself but then realized that the UE was little more than a lateral move quality wise…just in a (ridiculously oversized) nice box.
