Hey Alessa! Sorry I haven't watched any videos of yours lately... I've not been watching much of anything the last few weeks! But as we spent 10 day running all over Kent and Sussex at hyper speed visiting castles and manors and gardens like crazy, I thought of you and Brett! I was wondering if you had done videos of the castles I visited: Leeds, Hever, Bodiam, Penshurst Place, Herstmonceux etc. Have y'all hiked Glastonbury Tor? It was a fun visit, between the Tor, the town and the abbey. So glad we went! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers XX Dara

I thought you were vlogging and driving at the same time until I realised you are not in the driving seat! We went to Glastonbury quite a long time ago, it was an unforgettable experience! I like the fact that it is open to hikers and that there are no facilities. Fountains Abbey used to be like that but then the NT built a big visitors centre and started to charge a large entry fee. At Glastonbury, the tower, the view, the flowers, the legends, everything, the experience is stunning. Fantastic drone shots, they really add something.

Haha, yes... PSA: Don't vlog and drive! I actually don't drive in Britain, so it's convenient that I'm the one that does all the filming ;-) Yes, I agree that it's great when these historic monuments aren't overly commercialised.... just look at what has happened with Stonehenge. It might be nice to have toilets, but when you have a huge "visitors centre" and a gift shop and merch and then a big pricetag... no thanks! But thanks to YOU for watching our little adventure in Glastonbury! I hope you and your family are well. Cheers! Dara

Hello Dara & Ian. Again a great video. It’s been a long time since I went to the top of the Tor. It was spring 1967 on a geography school trip. It’s a spooky place. The traditions and unproven “facts” about the Tor are immense. I heard about Joseph of Arimathea and Jesus being there and the hymn that includes the line “And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England’s mountain green”. This used to be one of my late Mum’s favourite hymns, this is also the anthem of the UK’s Women’s Institute (WI), often nicknamed Jam & Jerusalem. There is a great movie called Calendar Girls which has great references to the WI, We have a national anthem for the UK, God Save the King, but there are proposals to use Jerusalem as England’s anthem. God Save the King would remain as the UK anthem but for England only events, such as soccer & rugby, would use Jerusalem. We in Wales & Scotland have our own anthems for our nations events. Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers) and Flower of Scotland. The sound of our Welsh Anthem at a Wales v England rugby match is incredible The Principality (or Millennium) Stadium has a capacity of 74,000, the sound is incredible. Said to worth a couple of points!
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing all that great information! I know about the women's institute, but have never heard of the "jam and Jerusalem" nickname. That's awesome! I would love to hear a crowd sing any of the national anthems! And would love to be at the proms sometime to hear Jerusalem sung.
@petersymonds4975 Жыл бұрын
@@MagentaOtterTravels Dara. The Proms starts today, the opening concert is being shown on BBC tonight, my late mum used to love Jerusalem, it was one of her favourite hymns. She was a member of the local WI, Women's Institute. Their anthem is Jerusalem, the WI has a reputation for making excellent Victoria Sponges to an explicit recipe and this got them the nickname of Jam and Jerusalem. A great film Calendar Girls is based on the WI ethos. There is talk of Jerusalem being made the English anthem. The UK anthem of God Save The King would remain as the UK’s anthem but Jerusalem could be used for football and rugby matches. Here is a You Tube film of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Hadau being sung at one of Wales finest rugby players for his final Wales game. Shane is the shorter man showing great emotion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHPTgqSHbZx9hck (or search “Shane Williams j last match anthem”).

Your American accent caught me out at the start. I thought you were saying a 'tour tour'. 😁 That climb looks STEEP. I don't think you'd see this hiker with my abilities on the trail. Stunning views from the top. I know all about relics brining in money from watching Cadfael. Talking about the rain. Which would you prefer. Rain at Glastonbury or the 116.6F that Kuwait is having? The Acropolis in Greece is closed due to heat too. You need to find a woman that used to work in the Lancashire cotton mills. They can read lips. 👄 Those fairies in that shop are magnificent. Were the wings you had on in the Natural Earthing your own, or did you buy them there? You should have ised them to fly up the tor. 💸😁 Imagine Yoda as Shakesepeare. To be or not to be. Question is that? That ploughman's looks good, except for the beetroot. It was beetroot? Fruit cake YUM. 🍰😁Fancy passing on the Eccles cakes. What's the difference between a cherry Danish and a Greggs Belgian Bun? I just got up to Trish. (To be continued after dinner). 😁

@@MagentaOtterTravels What's 400 years give or take? Getting the date wrong will be good for bringing in views anyway. There's nothing like a mistake for increasing the comment counts. Between 1914 and 1925 the English composer Rutland Boughton held the "first" series of Glastonbury Festivals, modelled on Wagner's Bayreuth Festivals. Boughton wrote a series of operas to be performed there, the most famous of which is 'The Immortal Hour'. The Festival foundered when the communist-leaning composer upset the opera-going public with his support for the 1926 General Strike. You might also be interested to check out English author John Cowper Powys's 1932 novel 'A Glastonbury Romance' which he wrote and published in the US, while on a lecture tour in up-state New York. In it, he explores the effect the old Grail legends have on various inhabitants in 1930s Glastonbury. When it was published in the UK the next year he was sued by the then real owner of Wookey Hole Caves who resented how his fictional counterpart had been unflatteringly depicted.

Dara visits Glasters Now we're in a jam Wish we could go faster This was not the plan Funny signs, happy times, this is far more grand. Magenta flowers, who'd have thought, Dara's eye, this has caught. Head for the Tor, happily we blog, picturing Ian, posing for a catalogue! The view from the top, totally marvelous, Druids, hippies, daytrippers now getting far from us. The history is solid, formed from the rock, Ancient terraces, untrained eyes are shocked. Age old stories, Long worn histories, Far too many conspiracy theories. Earthquakes, madness, how does it stand? Untouchable monument over this land. Now it is haggard, worn rust and ruin, Just like Dara's mike but that wont stop us pursuing *A lovely day out with flowers and stuff* *Maybe ducklings, needs more ducklings* Sorry, my "poetry" ran out of steam.

Every video needs more ducklings! haha THAT WAS THE BEST POEM EVER!!! Thank you so very much. I thoroughly enjoyed that very entertaining and creative recap of our adventures in Glasto! We just returned home late last night from a 10 day trip to Kent and Sussex. We saw lots of ducklings. I took loads of video... we shall see how many vlogs result. My fave video clip is of the ducklings eating seeds out of the palm of Ian's hand! So adorable! I learnt a lesson after Blenheim... if I get anywhere near ducks, I offer them food and watch my fingers! haha Have a great weekend! Cheers! Dara

The name of the bakery might be a nod to the story about King Alfred the Great, where it is said that he burnt the cakes, while sheltering in a peasant's house.

I'll be ok at the abbey. I don't do sunbathing, topless or otherwise. 😎 I don't swim either. I don't trust anything that can't support my weight. 🏊♂😁 Is there anywhere in Britain that doesn't lay claim to King Arthur's court? Wait. Where's the photo of the Devils door? Didn't you find any?
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
Ha ha, I'm glad that someone read that sign! I thought the topless sunbathing thing was pretty funny. But, Glastonbury! Yes, claiming King Arthur stuff is almost as common as claiming religious relics back in medieval times! No, for once I did not look for a Devils door. We were trying to make a quick stop at the church so we could get to the Abby! I didn't walk around the back and sides of the church at all, which is where we usually see them 😉... but I did get some good photos of tiny doors in Sussex and Kent! Thankfully we are back home now after a really hellish drive on the M25 on a rainy Friday evening!
