What a fabulous collection of Liverpool highlights. There are so many wonderful buildings in Liverpool, such a diverse mix of architectural styles. The bombed-out church is a magnificent monument to those lost during World War II. The Liver Building is such an iconic feature of Liverpool. Hello Dara &Ian. Another great video. I’ve never had the chance to visit Liverpool, nearly went on a course for work on some new equipment but it clashed with some other training. In other parts of England are some great towns that were built with the factory worker in mind. One of the greatest is Bournville near Birmingham. The name may be familiar to you, think of dark chocolate. Yes Bournville is where the Cadbury chocolate is made. When the factory was built this was just country. Cadbury was a very philanthropic employer and he built the town of Bourneville to house his workers, again a very well kept and conserved town. Worth a visit even though it has “Cadbury World” visitor attraction near there. The other great town similar to Port Sunlight & Bourneville is Saltaire in West Yorkshire. Titus Salt was another great entrepreneur who philanthropic to his Mill employees and as it’s on the side of the Aire canal and river that took in and sent out his goods he gave the town it’s name of Saltaire. Another town fantastic architecture of benevolent companies.
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention it when I did the voiceover for the video... but when we were in Port Sunlight I definitely mentioned Bournville. That was the first "workers village" that I ever saw. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting there... though that was 20 years ago now. My chocoholic son and hubby really loved the Cadbury World exhibit and the chocolate tasting!! Ian's ancestors are from the Birmingham area. Thanks for recommending Saltaire. Shall remember when we are in West Yorkshire next ;-) Thanks for watching and commenting, Peter!
@ians3586 Жыл бұрын
Bournville does a good job illustrating how there really hasn't been any progress with housing for the working class. When I visited, it seemed like Bournville was this beautiful oasis in the midst of architectural mediocrity. It's amazing what beauty these few industrialists created, shame it's not being done today. Saltaire is on my bucket list.

It wasn't a bomb in the normal sense of the word , it was an incendery device (fire bomb) these where dropped in clusters and were about the size of a tube of bathroom sealent that you can buy for sealing around your bath. They were made of magnesium which is used in distress flares and they were designed to do the job just as it did on the church, burn through the roof and set fire to the inside of the building!

Yet another wonderful video. They make my day and set me up for the weekend. 🥰 My mother used to tell me stories about the blitz around there, (including sound effects of the German bombers engines). The Germans coming over dropping oil drums. She always said Germans in a Lord Haw Haw accent. She worked in the canteen of BICC, (British Insulated Callender's Cables). A very important target. She used to carry nine plates at a time. Can you do that? I'm a little surprised there's a statue of Wellington there. He may be best known for Waterloo, but in Lancashire he's more known for the Peterloo Massacre. Wellington opposed parliamentary reform. His successor, Earl Grey (of tea fame) was in favour of it. The people of Newcastle knew who the better man was, so erected a monument to Earl Grey instead of Wellington. 😁 You noticed the Beatles reference in 'All Together Now' of course. Someone once told me that it's impossible for lions to sit like that. I'm still upset that they demolished the Liverpool Overhead Railway. 😭😭😭 I note that there appear to be different time zones in Liverpool, going by the clocks on the Liver Building anyway. 😁 Your Scouser guide lives in a very small world if he thinks Liverpool is the best team in it. 😉Liverpool FC anthem is surprisingly not a Beatles song, but is instead by their great (and better) rivals, Gerry and the Pacemakers. The Onedin Line, that I keep going on about, is set in Victorian Liverpool. (Keeps shtum about the pronunciation of Cunard). 😁 I mention Doughnut spelling in my upcoming video. lol Shame the diner is a LT RM bus instead of a Liverpool City Transport Leyland Titan or the beautiful Crossley. Did you know that people collected double decker buses? (And they call us train buffs obsessive). 😂 Two of my great aunts emigrated to the USA. Probably from that very dock. No idea what became of them or why they went together. I'll bet Billy Fury Fans were 'Furious' at your identification error. 🤣 When yawning we were told we had a mouth like the Mersey Tunnel. I used to know quite a bit about the railways of Port Sunlight, but luckily for you, (if you're still reading to this point), I can't remember it. 😅 I think they were playing Crown Green Bowling, which is different from the regular kind. It has a hump in the middle, making it harder to control the bowls. We had the other great soap company, Procter & Gamble up here. Message ends. (Who said 'Finally thank goodness?')
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
I can barely carry ONE plate, let alone nine!!! Interesting to hear the dispute between Grey and Wellington. I do remember the Earl Grey monument in Newcastle, of course! I did wonder about the Beatles reference in the Christmas Truce sculpture! I did not look at the clocks! You are too detail oriented LOL Sorry I have been rubbish at watching your (and everyone else's!!!) videos. I'll try to be better. Hopefully no Billy Fury fan club members will watch my video ;-) I said Cunard 3 times while recording the voiceover... just couldn't get it right. So I gave up. Your great aunts left for the USA and disappeared?!?!?! That's alarming! Ah yes, P&G is another huge consumer brand company! Thanks for your message, friend!
@Poliss95 Жыл бұрын
@@MagentaOtterTravels Carrying nine plates can be very dangerous. My mother dropped a plate with scalding her gravy on her knee. A co-worker covered it with flour. The worst thing you can do. Left her with a very big scar. When your favourite show is about someone who travels through time in a police box, you tend to notice clocks. lol Don't worry about not watching my video from last year. I haven't finished editing it yet. 😁 I heard about my great aunts when I was little. Never thought to ask for more details. I wish I had asked more questions now. My Scottish grandmother's memories of Victorian times would have been fascinating. I wouldn't have dared asking my Lancashire grandparents anything. They were of the opinion that children should be seen and not heard. Preferably not seen either. The grim looks people gave on old photos wasn't because they had to sit still for a long time because of the slow shutter speeds. Their faces always looked like that. 😁

Well I'm sold on visiting Liverpool now! I have to admit, other than London (which I love) UK cities don't really appeal to me, so I haven't been to many major ones. I prefer the smaller towns and the countryside, the stereotypical pretty chocolate box view of Britain. Northern cities, especially Liverpool and Manchester just had this aura around them as being grim and depressing, so for Liverpool in particular it's great to see that it's nothing like I thought it was.

I had to stop after you mentioned Port Sunlight and say, that if you want fantastic views of the NorthWest. On a clear day you can see the Jodrell Bank radio telescope in Cheshire then turn around and see Blackpool Tower on the Lancashire coast. Then go up to Rivington Pike, just past Wigan. Lord Leverhulme who built Port Sunlight, had a holiday bungalow up there. He also had lots of gardens built with little pathways to explore and a small lake (edit: more of a pond than a lake really) next to the 'Pigeon Tower'. Very close to the old Beacon/tower and next to the Winter Hill TV transmitter. It's a nice day out if you like walking and exploring.

7:03 Cunard is still in business, and they still operate a route between the UK and USA. Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner left in service. Nice video btw

It is not often that you see a side saddle equestrienne statue.
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
I will never understand how those proper ladies in their long skirts managed to ride those horses side saddle. I can barely ride a horse at all! But yes, I thought it was a lovely statue of Queen Victoria!
@lizbignell7813 Жыл бұрын
Side saddle is actually safer, as long as the horse doesn’t fall, because you have two pommels so you just clamp your legs together to stay on. I have only done it once, in a massive field on an ex national hunt horse but l lived to tell the tail!
@lizbignell7813 Жыл бұрын
PS, l saw Queen Victoria’s saddle at Kensington Palace and it was ENORMOUS but when you saw the size of her underwear, well….!

Port Sunlight very similar to Bournville in Birmingham built by Cadburys for the workers. Every house has its own architectural feature and is therefore slightly different to the next. No pubs in the area even to this day as the Cadbury were Quakers. Has Port Sunlight any pubs ?
@ruthmuirhead61 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the Bridge Inn. Lord Leverhulme was teetotal but he asked the villagers what they wanted, they said a pub, so he built them a pub. Good man.
@MagentaOtterTravels Жыл бұрын
We did see a pub in Port Sunlight. Bournville is the first workers community that I ever saw. I would opt for a chocolate shop over a pub myself 😂

Thanks for this compilation of your favourite spots in Liverpool. This is a great idea when preparing for a trip and you don't have much time to spend somewhere, so you can concentrate on what is worth visiting! 👍

Thank you so much, Patz! My opinion is that everybody is interested in different things. So I have tried to do videos on different topics, like architecture or the Beatles... so that if someone's planning a trip they can focus on what is most enjoyable for them 😉

@@MagentaOtterTravels If you manage to get back over to the Wirral, Birkenhead Priory is worth a quick visit. The nine hundred year old remains of a Benedictine monastery, right slap bang next to Cammell Lairds dry dock. Really strange juxtaposition.
