To explain what motivated the former president, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maggie Haberman chronicles Trump's life in her new book "Confidence Man." She joins Walter Isaacson to discuss Trump's rise and post-presidential life.

Good interview. Hope the book changes the minds of people unfamiliar with narcissism or who do not believe in such so-called "mumble-jumble". The man likely has narcissistic personality disorder and some experts have said it is worse since they believe him to be a "malignant" narcissist or even a sociopath. The behaviors mentioned here all jive with narcissistic personality disorder - egocentrism, habitual lying, relationships with other people being purely transactional as they are only there for his use, no loyalty to anyone and will throw anyone (incl his own kids) under the bus, parrots what others say since he lacks moral character or any "north star" to establish opinions of his own (unless for his own benefit). Sure, that means he is also a deeply insecure person, but he is also one sick and dangerous SOB. As his niece says, do not underestimate the depths to which he will sink for his own benefit. Or to save his hide.

Because of Trump I have come to learn what a narcissist is, their attributes, and what their behaviors are like and I was able to finally label someone I've known for decades as a narcissist. From my research on narcissism because of Trump I was able to determine that my friend is a covert narcissist whereas Trump is an overt narcissist (who is much easier to spot). At about 16:40 where Haberman had said that Trump was ultimately made it about himself is correct about the narcissist. My narcissist friend did that to me at one time when I said I wasn't feeling well and I wasn't going to be able to make it to the lunch that friends had invited us to and my friends response was "Hey come on, I told them you were coming". Wow, there was no empathy and it turn out to be about them! Yup, the expected response was something like "Ok, I'll tell them. Hope you feel better soon".

Amanpour has some of the most revealing guests ever, regarding political strategy, if you pretty much know what you're looking for. Despite our disagreement on Trump, I respect much the content of this show immensely. Todays strategy tidbit 15:40 where they will be reverting to attacking him for self focus after paying trolls and etc to help create that exact mindset.

One issue I have with her regardless on how she explains it away. . She had so much information that should have been reported in her paper in real time but she as others held on to the information for her book for only one reason $$$$ maybe a better investigative journalist but motivation but her with all those book writers with 1st hand knowledge were willing to see the breakdown of our democratic system for personal gain.

@@chuckkottke trump has a lot of folks in his corner still. Him running for office will be no different than doing what he's already doing. Holding Klan Rallies, Manifesting violence on his enemies via his cult, going on TV and re hashing 2020 and stating how he will spend his next 4 years on a revenge tour with zero policy. Sadly he still has a better than 50% chance of winning in 2024--we really are this stupid here!

They don't have a clear understanding of themselves. A _Punk Financial Times_ piece put it best, " If Donald Trump is the answer, what in hell is the question?". This was _before_ the 2016 election on KZbin and I've never heard an answer from Trump or his supporters, certainly none that made any sense. In 2016 I called into a radio talk show and complained about a lack ideological coherence from Trump and his supporters, also before the 2016 election.

@@Sandi-ke9mi Thank you. Political analysis on that level is beyond Trump supporters with their anti-intellctual clap-trap. It's a _key_ reason why Trump and his supporters kept shooting themselves in the foot. I saw it here on KZbin in 2016, I don't think it was a written report in the FT.

I've seen a number of interviews with Maggie Haberman since excerpts of her book started coming out and I'm super impressed by her professionalism. She's certainly not a sensationalist. She's very low key and speaks carefully. It's possible what I see is just her reserved manner, but I can't help thinking she comes across as profoundly saddened by this whole Trump mess. At some level I'm sure she relishes coming out with a best selling book. But I wouldn't be surprised if she would trade her book success (including the $$) for all this to never have happened. She's be phenomenally successful no matter what. She didn't need Trump to do that.
