They talked about this in an interview. Kirstie's dress was so stiff she had to take tiny steps. Avi headed out on stage too soon and Kirstie started to follow, Jlo was waving at her to stop but Kirstie thought she was just waving 'Hi" and waved back. Someone stopped Kirstie but Avi was out there by himself for a minute.

You realize that Mitch has been in Pentatonix since he was 19. They have stayed really busy (the reason Avi left) that training in Opera would be something he hasn't had time for. I think he would be amazing at Opera.

If you see this - your question on Avi and singing opera he recently said in April/May was that there were very few good arias for basses in opera. His favorite was the one in the Marriage of Figaro. He double majored in college for choral and opera.

Maggie there are several live performances of them doing Aha with Christus Factus Est. The Hookywood Bowl is good but Singapore at The Star Vista (sound quality fair mainly because of Avi's lows and Kevin beatboxing) you will not see Kevin but you hear him. Mitch is quite the performer in this one

If you want to hear them sing classically, you could listen to them do Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The lows of Avi with a extreme high note from Mitch. Not sure what the octave difference is but it could easily be 6 octaves. A song without voices sung by a band without instruments. It was their second Grammy.

From Avi's staff bio on the website for Acapella Academy (an acapella summer camp he co-founded and is a director of): "He majored in opera and choral studies at Mt. San Antonio College, a school known for its strong choral and a cappella tradition". So, yes, actual opera training, for realsies, though his personal and professional focus is on the "choral" side of that major. Also, I would DIE to see Mitch sing Nerone, omfg. Poppea is one of my favorites! I mean, it's beautiful, and the way the libretto APPEARS to glorify greed and evil is an incredible social commentary, even today, and the dissonance in Pur Ti Miro is a perfect example of the way the music repeatedly points out the lie of the plot, omfg, like, all that dissonance woven through a big climactic lover's duet, especially knowing how the real Nero and Poppea's lives horrifically ended, not THAT long past the "happy" moment the curtain closes on? YES PLS.

Yes Avi sounded so great, for those who have followed PTX from the beginning we've already seen bits and pieces of this side of his huge talent 😊 About Mitch... Lets say I agree with you, his voice is just gorgeous, he's done wonders with his voice many times, but I cherish this too short performance because it SHOWS his potential (it's the purest high note I've ever heard him sing), and at the same time I wish he had gone further in training his wonderful voice...

If you want to hear Kirstie sing opera, I suggest listening to their cover of “When You Wish Upon A Star”! While it’s not an opera song and Kirstie doesn’t sing completely operatically, she sings in a much more legit style and it’s gorgeous! Sadly there is no video for it but it’s so good. I mean......of course it’s good, it’s Pentatonix.

Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony to audition for _The Sing-Off._ He'd been involved in children's theater at an early age - that's where both Kirstie and Scott originally met him, though they seem to have missed meeting each other until they were in the same class in high school - but the training he received was only the training that any talented child would receive in those circumstances. Then in high school, after Mitch came out of the closet, he was bullied for how high his voice was. This was likely a manifestation of homophobia, but Mitch internalized it as being about his voice. Even now, over 11 years after he graduated from high school, Mitch has major insecurities about his voice because of the way people treated him back then. And from 2011 on Mitch has been totally involved with Pentatonix, no time for college Pentatonix has practically an encyclopedic knowledge about music, from almost all genres. Mostly they perform pop, but "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner) is Electronic Dance Music; "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (second Grammy winner) is from Tchaikovsky's _Nutcracker Suite;_ and "Jolene" (third Grammy winner, shared with Dolly Parton who performed it with them at the age of 71) is Country. Also, there are videos of all the members of Pentatonix, but especially Mitch, imitating whatever sounds they happen to hear. So let Mitch listen to a few epic operatic counter tenor performances and he may well get the equivalent of college training in opera just from that.

PTX participated in the Sing-Off while Mitch was still in high school. Never got to the advanced classical training.

Not saying that I disagree or know anything about vowel shapes.. But ..there is a certain melancholy, longing, or timelessness ( immense void of space , epic struggle loss and drama) that is portrayed in the opening. The taller vowels can be a bit bright and hopeful ....classical is not Mitch's thing and perhaps it would be better as you suggest ....but I beleive that there is a certain element of choice in it as well.

If you enjoyed them with an orchestra behind you should check them out at Hollywood Bowl, in 2017. They sang more of their songs there with orchestra (Bohemian Rapsody, Imagine, Aha, etc). And also please react to Aha live in Singapore at Star Vista, epic lows and highs "battle" between Avi and Mitch (they have an opera moment there) .
