You need to listen to Rainbow "Mistreated" Live in Munich '77 ; it will blow your mind. It's funny because my introduction to Ronnie was his solo stuff but I found that, IMO, his best stuff was from Sabbath backwards to Rainbow. I should also add "Catch the Rainbow" to the list. Happy New Year and thank you for the video!

Dio was such an amazing vocalist and from all the interviews I had seen from different people he was an all-around good person. HE would go out of his way for his fans. It is mind blowing that he had very little vocal training. One of his best vocal performances was the song Mistreated by Rainbow, the live version from 1977 in Munich.🤘

@@luamoliveira3467 You are of course entitled to your opinion, but I have heard this song probably thousands of times through the decades and i know this recording extremely well, the only difference is that the vocal is live and this mix is mono for some reason which can make a huge sonic difference of course, it could also possibly be mastered slightly differently so the EQ can maybe be a bit different. The instruments are the exact same performances as on the album though in my opnion.

There is no comparing with Ronnie James. At newyer i celebrated by watching the live concert from Tokio-85. He has done so much in his own name and in other bands. The most legendery and well known must be DIO Holy diver and Heaven and hell with Sabbath. Absolute gems. The small man with the great voice that everyone rfers to when someone comes up nowdsys and can sing. Oh he/she sounds like Dio and thats the greatest remark you ever can get, even though no one sounds like him. Such a magic voice❤

Imagine being just a kid getting a Rainbow record and playing it for the first time. The entire band blew me away. I didn't catch them in the 70s because I was too young or even see them live. When the early 80s came it all happened for me and they still give me shivers with their songs. RJD has that wizardry to wheel you in like a spell, his voice is that damn good. I never heard anyone with a simple word pronounced so well in a message. That word can be clear, growl, or power. He had it all. How many songs did RJD do where he just shouted out "Look Out" lol my favorite singer of all time.

One of the most iconic singers, if not the most iconic. Often imitated but never replicated. What makes him even more amazing, well at least to me, is that he never took vocal lessons. He was trained in classical trumpet at an early age and this is how he learned breath control. In his own words, "I've never taken vocal lessons. My early trumpet training and a fortunate talent for singing has always been enough for me. In the case of rock singing, I've always felt it was better to remain a bit untrained to maintain your individuality"

Your comment about the strength of his voice there is actually a story that Jack black tells the when recording dios vocals for the pick of destiny he brought his own mic and the people recording wanted to try different mics out to see which one would sound best but ended up using dios personal microphone because the power of his voice broke three very expensive ones the studio had, that why he brought his own mic because he had this problem before. Also another great track (and my personal favorite) is his version of mistreated from the live in Munich recording. Possibly his best performances if not definitely one of the best.

About the credits: David Stone, very obviously, wrote the keyboard intro but were coerced into forfeiting his credits for it. By Blackmore, who else? Stone got increasingly frustrated with this, which precipitated his ousting from the band. After one show, Blackmore took him up to his hotel room and asked: "Do you still want credits?" Stone said yes. At which point, Blackmore drew the curtains from the window, revealing all of Stone's gear, and said: "There's your credits! You're fired!" Blackmore was (and possibly is) a musical genius, but absolute garbage as a human being. The abovementioned story I got directly from Stone's predecessor in Rainbow, the unfathomably gifted Tony Carey. Who Blackmore in turn had bullied, and fired, and rehired repeatedly until one incident too many became the final straw that made Carey flee the band on his own accord. Blackmore, and drummer Cozy Powell, took great pleasure in bullying the young keyboard prodigy, and Carey, who in his inexperience thought this to be normal for a professional band, mostly shook it off. Until, finally, Blackmore and Powell, set Carey's hotel room on fire while also barricading it from the outside. A terrified and traumatized Carey managed to escape - through the window, I think - and ran off, boarded a plane to his native US. To date, he has never met or interacted with Ritchie again. Powell, shortly before his death in 1998, admitted in an interview that he felt really sorry about this uncalled for cruelty against Carey back in the day. Blackmore, to my understanding, has never expressed any regret whatsoever. He usually doesn't. The incident inspired Dio, who in stark contrast dearly loved Carey and considered him one of the greatest keyboard player he ever knew, to write the lyrics for the song "L.A. connection", that immediately precedes "Gates of Babylon" on the "Long live rock'n'roll" album. Carey moved to Germany shortly thereafter, where he has had a very successful and still ongoing solo career.

David Stone's own words: "I wrote quite a lot of “Gates Of Babylon” but I never got any publishing for it although management gave me $10,000. I wrote the intro and the whole middle section and I wrote the passing chords in the chorus." The stuff with credits and publishing was normal industry practice, whether or not it was fair. Every band has someone with a hard luck story.

@@Stefan- Yes, you are right. The thing I know about Dio is that he is one of the few singers like (Ozzy Osbourne and Freddie Mercury) who can produce two voices at the same moment live, and in this video Dio sang with two voices at the same time and the third voice was for (Bob DeSlay). The evidence for this is the Dio Festival in 1986, which was almost entirely performed in two voices, and few will notice that. There are many clips in which Dio sang with more than one voice on the air.
