The New York Comic Con Panel is here. The rumors were (mostly) true. There is a new Dragon Ball anime series coming out next year, Dragon Ball Daima! Goku and the others become kids. Check out my rundown of this exciting panel!

Yeah, I think Toriyama misses the way things once were during his Dr.Slump & early Dragon Ball days before things got too serious. That, and he doesn’t have his original editors to interfere with his original ideas, some of which made changes for the best, especially during the Cell Saga.

Ok first, I';m glad the Claire hat seems to have made it without issue! I know you were worried about that. 2nd: Ok, I'm on board. I'm in the camp who likes Super for what it is. (I trained myself to not expect it to be on the level of the OG story and to just enjoy the ride, and while I have my criticisms, I overall enjoyed it) so I feel like this, which seems to be an overt attempt to make something fun and silly might be right up my alley. cautious optimism.

Something interesting is that this series seems to follow Toriyama's current artstyle instead of going with the Yamamuro style like Super did, so that's definetly a positive because it reflects the current era of DB art better rather than trying to recapture the past, like Dragon Ball has been doing since 2013, and we never saw the newer style in animation form before.

A lot of people say that they thought they would dislike it, but they really like it. For me, I knew nothing about it, and after seeing the trailer, I don't like it. I think I'm done with new Dragon Ball stuff. The final episodes of Super, as well as the Broly movie after that excited me again, but in general, Dragon Ball hasn't really been good since well before even the end of Z, in my opinion. There's so much great anime these days that I'm able to build new great memories in the present, rather than having to rely on sub-par stuff that tries to nostalgia-bait us with the past yet doesn't serve up anything that is worthy of that nostalgia.

【Shades Finnish Pirates】I actually was a occultist before, i experienced magic 3x times at the age of 18y and made video about it at my 30+ on the dying day of my grandpa (not intended) but the third supernatural third thing was a cursed Mp3 player with Vegeta's dubbed voice saying "No no, the Sayan the sayan" as if the pieces were cutted from different part of the DBZ & this happened 6x times after the initial cursed Vegeta phrase. Well, it seems this is apparently being done as a tie in/celebratory tribute with the 40th anniversary of the manga, given that milestone is coming next December. Similar to how The Path to Power was done to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the anime back in early 1996 just after GT had premiered on TV. So, there is previous precedent to having animated DB projects around an anniversary period.

I was expecting to hate whatever new thing was gonna come out of the franchise and this is SO MUCH BETTER than anything I could've hoped for. I really really hope they keep it silly and funny. Dragonball has been ramping up in a direction I really didn't like. But this takes a step in a direction I'm looking much more forward to.

I might be the only person who thinks this, but I think the extended cut of Battle of Gods really kills the pacing compared to the theatrical cut, takes it from "a pretty chill, relaxed but engaging movie" to "multiple people I've shown this to genuinely fell asleep during it".

@@iug5672 A lot of extra shots to existing scenes to add more explanatory or commentary dialogue, plus a couple of extra scenes that are fun on their own (Oolong playing rock-paper-scissors with Beerus For The Fate Of The Earth) but where they're placed slow things down imo

As someone who is quite bored with the endless Goku and Vegeta dynamic, I wanted those two to finally retire and pass things on to the younger generation. A cynical part of me says that apparently they'll just deage everyone and turn Goten and Trunks into babies again before they become relevant in a story. Super Hero was a lot of fun, I liked that, but I am a bit cynical to this one mostly because the Goku Vegeta dynamic just is so dull by this point and I want them to do different stuff.

I am... skeptical. As someone who doesn't completely hate GT, I was fine with the idea of Goku turning back into a kid, because he debuted that way and spent a half of the story that way. But EVERYONE ELSE being turned into a kid is something that will be hard for me to swallow. I will still enjoy it if it's a good show, but the concept of "Popular Franchise Babies Edition" already puts me off. I do hope it's good, though.

It's an opportunity to use most of the cast in new ways hope they don't screw this. Also Gohan and Videl being the same age as Pan is comedy that writes itself. Funnily enough Pilaf gang did it first both in GT and Super.

Yes, it is a heavily-expanded and polished version of Super Lesbian Horse RPG, replacing the licensed characters with a completely new world and lore. From what I understand, Claire is the Twilight Sparkle equivalent.

Honestly the most interesting part for me is that the series is using manga coloring for characters. Supreme Kai is pink, Goku's gi is brighter, and Piccolo's muscles are that beige-ish color.

I'm shocked about responses here. I think it's marvellous. It tells you all you need to know in the trailer. It's a celebration of Dragon Ball. As clearly shown by the timeline, this is just another take on a series that has gone a MULTITUDE of changes over the years - in terms of overall vibe and production. I read it as going back - for a short while - to the roots of the story, to the adventures that Goku had at the beginning. It's an anniverasry gift to this series and it lies with Toriyama's playfulness exhibited in first parts of his story and other works. The whole vibe is also very Disney-esque - and it's widely known that Toriyama was heavily influenced by earlier Disney works. For all of you worried about your further Orange Beast Ultra Ego Black Gods transformations - it's coming. There will be plenty more of muscles, battles, laser beams and universe-threatening drama. Whatever they have installed for the series, clearly Broly and Super Hero meant that they won't abandon the thing that made it truly popular. But I think DAIMA works fantastic as a one-shot anniversary series. It looks so great and polished, and I expect that we will get a ton of fantastically animated high-paced battles - with Nyoibo! I can't wait for the level of animation we're gonna get with "battles that are cute and powerful!!". I also don't know (nor care) if it's cannon, but it it seems to explore a lot of lore (demons, gods, Boo, space, some misterious pods, some Freezer-species). And they can just forget it all with Shenron's spell anyway at the end. The fact that they've ALL chibied is hillarious. Especially Vegeta. I dunno - it's a coincidence, but last month I ordered remaining 19 volumes of manga I was missing - the first part. I only had so-called "Z" part of the story and re-reading the original was so fun. I love the campiness and energy that earlier parts of the series had. While I think it wouldn't work to go back to it for good, I'd love to see some of that in modern Dragon Ball as well. I think that was a fantastic trailer and I can't wait for it.

So I'm not gonna lie. I kind of low-key love this? Like, on paper, "Turn Everyone Into Chibi Versions Of Themselves" feels like it SHOULD irritate the shit out of me? I didn't especially love it when they did that for "GT" with Just Goku, so applying it across the ENTIRE CAST feels like it really should rub me the wrong way. But in point of fact, the big thing for me is that in GT it ultimately wound up being skin-deep; even before the show started desperately trying to be "Dragon Ball Z" again, it had already dropped the pretense that Being A Kid Again had any sort of meaningful effect on Goku's power (he was turning into a Super Saiyan again pretty early on, for example), even as the idea was given lip-service; more over we had Pan and Trunks on hand to even things out. But this? This feels like it's being used as a means of VERY forcibly moving "Dragon Ball" out of the "Z"-shaped rut it's been trapped in for the last two decades and change and I am, genuinely, really excited by that. It LOOKS great too; the scenery and animation quality look GORGEOUS, and I genuinely ADORE everyone's super-cute chibi designs. I'm not shocked to see a lot of gnashing of teeth over this? But honestly I'm really down to see where this one goes, especially after "Super Hero" was itself such a pleasant breath of fresh air.

I'm not against Dragon Ball returning to a more light or whimsical tone, but it needs to move on from Goku and Vegeta if not just outright drop its rotting and bloated cast. A lot easier to buy a story like this when it doesn't star a JRPG hero who grinded to max level decades ago. Either that or just reboot Dragon Ball with a new Kid Goku with a different plot
