they keep bringing out athletes who miss out on a deal with Nike without considering the fact that Nike became what it is now because of Michael Jordan. Signing any other athletes besides MJ may have not yield the same outcome for both MJ and Nike. In an alternative reality where MJ is signed to Converse, Converse is what Nike is in our reality.
@supesulgi Жыл бұрын
Not really. The movie "Air" tackles this notion subtly. Converse and Adidas wouldn't consider Jordan their top endorser. No shares for the shoe sales number is also a factor that Nike risked in order to make their basketball division stay afloat. It's literally all or nothing for them. If they ever got Magic Johnson to sign with those deals that MJ got, they would likely be big (not as big as now since Jordan played a big part of their success) now than they were before, which you are correct. But Converse not giving MJ that share deal would not lead to the sales that MJ got from Nike. Part of the reason why it sold so freaking much is because they know they are directly supporting MJ by buying the shoes. Plus the shoes looks great ngl.

The fact of the matter is that Nike wouldn’t be what it is today without Jordan. Not saying they wouldn’t be successful, but Nike betting on Jordan was the best thing that happened to them. Look at how much Jordan shoes sell? Adidas made the same mistake. They skipped on the black American athlete and realized that the cultural relevance that they would gain worldwide as well as the sales from the shoe are something they can’t miss out on. Which is why they partnered with Kanye. Look up how much Yeezys made for Addidas. Damn near all of their money from the past fiscal years were because of Yeezy

Magic is the blueprint and laid the foundation for athletes today to become business men. His brilliance and work ethic are the things that have made him successful, not his smile! That was a dumb comment. He has counseled and helped a lot of the successful athletes we see today.

It is always so striking to hear an American journalist discussing his fellow citizens with the tone of an anthropologist describing some cannibal tribe in the mountainous uplands of Papua New Guinea.
