Great tute Casey. Rather than using it for selective grading do you know if it's possible to use it for masking out the background so that a person is superimposed on to the footage underneath? Kind of like a green screen?

What he showed you is rotoscoping. Davinci Resolve just calls it "Magic Mask".

you go to the color tab as seen in the video and then you add an alfa output and connect the blue rectangle to the alfa output.

Can you make this work for compositing? Say I wanted to magic mask that girl walking and add a deer crossing the path in front of her, but I want her to be occluded. Coukd magic mask allow the composited object to be in the background? Automated rotoscopijg more or less.

Casey, what if we want to keep the person walking but remove the background? I've person moving from left to right of frame, all I want is removing the unwanted cables and billboards from background of that person. I couldn't manage to track her.

Hey this might be a weird question...but do you have any idea why my magic mask data would disappear after the first frame? I'm tracking it and then making the alpha node and connecting it but when I play it back the first frame has part but then it disappears for the rest.

Hi, Is there a max len of a clip for a magic mask? I've not got it to complete. Even a simple head and shoulder clip. Select the person. She is seated and only occasionally moves a hand or her head a little. Normal for someone talking. Mask is a single stroke. It processes 5mins of clip then stops. No error, nothing. Ive pressed play fwd again. pause fwd. Nothing. This is just one example. There are others. Do you have any ideas ?

UPDATE to my previous post. I have noticed that part of my question was answered. Thanks Guys. You can use it to mask out a person. Just need to figure it out as Im new to Resolve. But my request for a new updated tutorial on my creation of a portal still stands. Your style is much easier to understand. I have just looked into your courses, but unfortunately, being just a hobbyist I cant justify to the wife (the boss) the cost, as much as I would love too. LOL

The magic mask tool is great so long as your expectations are realistic. What many inflencers dont mention is its limitations, it only really works well within certain conditions like high resolution footage, where the subject it quite well contrasted to the background. Also only tracks well for a few seconds maybe like 5 or 10 and if the figures pose /angle or limbs have moved a lot (complexity) it loses track and starts to make a real mess. Its a handy tool, but dont think for a second it can just subsitute 30 seconds worth of professionaly shot green screen footage, sadly It just cant do anything of the kind. if you were thinking of forking out for reslove studio just for this tool - I'd say dont.

Hi Casey. I just installed Davinci fusion and tried magic mask. I unfortunately face an issue. In color window, when using the qualifier to select an area, the mask is not created. It just select/hilight a very narrow area around the stroke I did. It seems a parameter, a threshold is wrong. I tried all possible parramters I see, but nothing changed. Do you have any ide where the issue could come from? The issue seems to be same if I try to do in fusion. the selection is not working properly.

I am so frustrated with this tool though because as I work through creating my magic masks and nodes for parts of a body (for example changing hair higlights, etc) they suddenly stop working and I have to start again. As I type my DR has just crashed again as i was tracking a magic mask (im on the latest release of STUDIO V17 BTW)

Hi Casey, have you noticed the tracking data randomly disappearing? I hit command+z to move back a couple steps WELL into the work flow, WELL past having tracked the clip and consequently wiped out all tracking data on 3 different masks I was using. Follow up question. Is there a way to use the magic mask to track a single frame, then apply that mask to the entire clip? Thank you in advance.

Would it be possible to use the magic mask to create (or extract) a person plus the border around it for the KZbin thumbnails? This video for example, uses a picture of yourself plus a "halo"/colored border. I assume you could create the mask, set a transformation in Fusion and save it as a still for the thumbnail. That could be a huuuuge timesaver!

make sure you have the mask button on like in this video. it also has to be tracked. you need to press the play button o the tracker.. or just step one frame to see a single frame mask

When I added the magic mask, the playback was so freaking slow. Actually, the playback for Davinci Resolve has always been an issue for me. Not very complicated masking. I just used a JPEG image, and mask out the man in it, and the video does not playback at all, like 2-3 frames per second. Am I the only person that has this problem?

Casey, this is unrelated to this video but im hoping you or someone can help with my question. I recently made a test video (learning a lot from your videos) and I had to audio tracks. After going through the Delivery page and render settings I sent it to render and export. Upon viewing the final exported video, the audio from the second track wouldn't play, it just goes silent until the video gets back to the first audio track. Can you help me here, what am I doing wrong when exporting a timeline with multiple audio tracks??
