Have watched this video more than any others. Really enjoy watching to see the techniques and skill. Been working on a winch launch for a bit now, but the bungee is the simplest
@soliv274 жыл бұрын
I longtime believed it is only very high one catch thermals, I did not even try to stay alift, because only 2meters wingspan, less than 30 meters high launch (friend or brother running with a fishing rod.. :-) Actually the biggest glider I had, the more stressed I was, unable to really ''fly the wind'' as it is said here. I really learnt with a 'foamy' (Alula style), side hand launch, able to catch bubbles few meters above the ground while it seemed the end of the flight. Also it allows many more launchs in a same time, a bit less risky to fly slow, change the settings... then suddenly one beautiful day you have to push down nastly in order to still see the glider and not beeing eaten by the cumulus where you would usually meet big gliders, paragliders, etc.. I would be thinking about electric winch if I began to fly FPV, at high levels... which law does not allows for FAI records... ;) It would be cool to see the cloudbase with a r/c glider. ....Again never heavy enough, bigger, further, higher, while keep it simple brings the essential.

Nice flying! One thing that flying real gliders showed me is just how much adverse yaw the ailerons produce even with heavy differential. I noticed a wee bit of adverse yaw on this model. You need to give pretty much equal aileron and rudder input to do a coordinated turn as you roll in and out. It's easy to do on an rc glider with mixes but has been one of my biggest challenges going into the full size gliders.
@ChuckPlains7 жыл бұрын
The Maxa only has rudder and elevator controls. What you saw during landing is the flaps. I think this is for a specific class of competition. Even so it has a lot of wins under it's wing.
@footsy4207 жыл бұрын
ChuckPlains now that I look at it again I wonder what I was thinking. I must see adverse yaw under my bed at night. Ive been flying a wing dlg/soap soarer and without rudder control it's got a lot of adverse yaw. With too much differential, it wants to climb as it rolls.
@ChuckPlains7 жыл бұрын
Actually, and iroincally, looking at the first few seconds of the vid, maybe this one does have ailerons. I'm not sure, but it deffo has flaps. ;¬)
@doogle-gf3fi7 жыл бұрын
+ChuckPlains If it helps, at 0:01 it looks like an aileron servo horn/linkage is visible on the top surface of the outer port wing panel just inboard of the "3.5" decal.

Yes that's what I've ended up thinking, ailerons AND flaps!

Great vid..... Question from a wana-b-pilot. In the vid it is stated he is flying 1/2 mile down wind. How the flip do you see your plane that far away?
@Kombivar4 жыл бұрын
Big wingspan, you can easily see it as long as you have a good sight. I remember my first RC plane, she has electric motor with collapsible propeller, so I modified wings to almost double the wingspan, than on the hot summer day I was amazed how high it goes so quick, then I realised that was thermal, I switched off the engine and had almost an hour of lift. remember to take your comfy sun baiting kit to lay and relax - otherwise you will have a "soar" neck :D

+spruceguitar I've posted you question on The Hobby Hub RC Guru (thehobbyhub.com/the-rc-guru). One of our RC experts will reply soon!
@TheHobbyHubAirVideo9 жыл бұрын
+spruceguitar Gliders range in price depending upon their construction and level of performance. Nowadays there are many excellent foam gliders that have reasonably good performance such as the Multiplex Easy Glider, which runs around £70 to £80. These are crash-resistant, easily repairable and good for learning on. Better performance can be achieved through inexpensive balsa wood kits, such as the Cambrian Elan 100. Gliders such as this will have a very good soaring performance after being launched by a bungee (around £20 to £30), but must be built by someone with experience in constructing balsa models. At the top end of the scale are fully composite gliders, such as those sold by www.hyperflight.co.uk. These range from relatively inexpensive hand launch gliders for around £200, all the way up to super-sophisticated three and four metre wingspan gliders costing up to £1,700. That said, one can have great fun and learn about soaring just as well from the Cambrian Elan as well as the £1,700 super glider. Often, used gliders can be picked up cheaply used from sites such as the BMFA classifieds. You'll find adverts by all the leading manufacturers and suppliers in our RC modelling magazines, RC Model World and Quiet & Electric Flight International. For details go to www.thehobbyhub.com

The best plane i own is the *super ava pro 4flaps* (6servos) 3.7m wingspan, weight only 1.23kg Man , the climbing rate that plane has is extreme... i do hand launches and i start just from around 4m high in a thermal. Crazy to do that. No elastic or winch needed 😊

@tempest4113 жыл бұрын
@@Justwantahover That plane isn't something the average hobbyist is going to build. I've built plenty of built-up planes, and owned a few down-range composites and can tell you those more expensive composite (vacuum bagged wing, or hollow molded glass and carbon) planes will fly rings around balsa/ply built-ups. My absolute favorite plane I still have is a design called the 'Edge Lite' sold through Northeast Sailplane Products. I think it was designed by a man named Phil Barnes.

Good tips! I don’t have over 2k dollars to spend on a glider but I do have a Gentle Lady glider an a Top Flite Metrik to thermal. What radio system do you use to fly comfortably up to 1/2 of a mile away? I use a Spektrum DX6 with AR610s and it is a bit dodgy to fly that far away.
@Tsnafu6 жыл бұрын
My FrSky Taranis will go comfortably well beyond line of sight (I also fly FPV) - your DX6/AR610 should be good for at least 1km (0.6 of a mile) as it claims to be full range - probably good for double that if you are careful with antenna positioning.

@davidshaw75055 жыл бұрын
Tubing is about 100 ft. Line about 500.. Usually we pull back about 100 paces or about 10 to 12 lbs. tension. Hope this helps. With a bungee you pull it back as much as it will let you. I use a 3 to 4 meter high start as well as a winch.

with witch rubber do you launch the glider?
@wordreet7 жыл бұрын
I think you'll find that the bungee is surgical tubing. A lot of places selling it add the word 'rubber' to the sale page, but rubber tubing is not suitable as it does not stretch far enough. Good quality silicone will stretch to 5 or 6 times it's length and retract back it's original size hundreds of times without problems. You will also need something like pre-stretched kite line (Dyneema) or fishing line (not monofilament) for the last part that attaches to the glider.
@g8rh8r1007 жыл бұрын
Kai02 i think its a high-start . 1/2" surgical tubing a length of braided nylon staging and a parachute with a split-ring above the canopy.
@wordreet7 жыл бұрын
1/2" ?! That seems pretty big. I was thinking more like 6 or 8mm. I'll be using 6mm to launch my 1.5mtr glider this weekend.

Please stop with the hand catches. It looks great until you miss and damage the plane. Every approach should be a practice attempt at 100 points on the landing tape. The only time I'll do a hand catch is when a dog is chasing the plane. Nice video.
