There is an equivoqué. There is a narrowing of options. It may not use verbal ambiguity or equivocal language, but you require the participant to think of a card from a specific bank of cards. This is no better than Inferno by Joshua Jay. In fact, I would argue that Inferno is the best isolated prediction of a "freely selected" card from a deck of 52 cards that will ever exist. It is vastly more interesting from a props and presentation perspective. Pulling a single card out of an envelope is so boring and only satisfies the conditions magicians LOVE to chase.

Inferno is the best of its kind. But with PTSD, I feel like if it’s being advertised as “no equivoqué” then to me, that’s misleading. It is not any card thought of. It’s any card thought of from a range of cards. How you determine that range is irrelevant. Remove, burn, hand me a pile, etc all achieve the same thing. Call it what you want, but it’s a force of a narrowed bank. Let’s not get caught up in semantics.

here's a quote from magic cafe just yesterday "I would be hesitant to call it equivoque in the literal meaning. There are no step-by-step choices that the spectator express verbally. The spectator speaks only once to declare his/her chosen card." .
@matthewoverd943511 ай бұрын
I would say it's what Peter Turner call "equivocal choreography", which is not the same as traditional equivoke. This is a much better effect than Inferno given the lack of traditional equivoke, it's far more direct and far more deceptive. "The conditions magicians love to chase" should be about perfection, just as it should be. The true innovation of this effect, in my opinion is the gimmick itself. Whatever card they name it's removed in the same clean and direct fashion.

@@matthewoverd9435 equivoqué doesn’t have to be verbal. You are forcing one of two groups in an ambiguous way. “Hand me one of the piles” is ambiguous. You resolve it in one of two ways depending on their actions. This is equivoqué, I don’t care what you think. Is it better than using language? I wouldn’t say so at all. It’s just a different approach. You could simply say, “imagine a deck of cards. Now we don’t need all of the cards for this, so would you like to remove the number cards or picture cards, it’s a completely free choice”. This has been a classic strategy that works with zero problems. Inferno is far superior in that the presentation is far more interesting and visual engaging. It has a premise that involves the participant and their choices. Having someone just name a card and you pull it out of an envelope is boring magic. Sure the conditions are awesome, but so is the Invisible Deck, which is the same damn effect.

The mentalism world does not need a new version of Kolossal Killer. The scripting from inferno by Joshua Jay and a 4 WO envelope or wallet is all you need. The drama built when the audience sees the volunteer turns over the card and the audience sees the look on their face and THEN they see the card is lost when DB or MI cards are used. Michael Close often said that a new version should only be released if it is an improvement. This is not. Several better versions are already available. Great review, as always. Thanks.

Which would you say is the best “one card prediction” mentalist trick out there? I liked the sound of this but Inferno seems better. Your thoughts?

I've been watching your reviews for a little over 3 years now. You give good positive and negative or should I say constructive criticism. One area of feedback I would like to give to you is that you don't always show the performance of the trick. Yes you describe it but in the magic professor we need visuals. There are a lot of other youtube channels showing trailers and/or performing. Thanks
@magicorthodoxy11 ай бұрын
This is only a "review / critic" channel. So I stay in my lane. I don't have a camera man, or the time to go find spectators willing to be on camera, nor the time to film tricks multiple times until they look "good enough" to be on camera. This is not my full time job

I’m rather confused when you say there’s “No Equivoque”. According to Vanishing Inc themselves, “A single step of equivoque is required.” And because I know the method, I know that when you’re pulling out the envelope, you very much do know something about the card they will name. You may not know it exactly , but you know a range it will be in. Is there a reason you deem the “verbal narrowing of options” in this trick to be not equivoque?
@magicorthodoxy11 ай бұрын
because it's not verbal .... what magicians understand classicly as equivoque is a step by step verbal choice - and that is not what is happening here
@jordynfink11 ай бұрын
Gotcha! Now I’m kinda interested in seeing what this non-verbal narrowing process is like, I’ll have to check it out eventually. Thanks!
