Love this series. That last line is rhetorical genius! And the answer is, 'probably' :)

Pitchforks and lanterns oh my! Run! Forest! Run! Lol! Fly Tying purist may be cringing but those majic materials, they breathe new life into old classic fly tying patterns. Thinking outside the box breathes creativity into new fly tying materials that get the fishes attention! It flat out works Tim! I tie a gurgle but with strips of white foam from a old life jacket, bass skirt material and a little flash and I cannot keep the bass off of it!! Keep the videos going! Tight lines!!

Love those mop flies. Especially when there is a purist, frowning and grinding his teeth close by! Thank Tim.

I never fish mop flies, but I often use micro-fiber flies with great success!

Chartreuse mop with black ice dub collar behind a black nickel bead. Two minute tie for an awesome fish getter. I have had 30 fish days with this fly, it works on big and small water and high mountain lakes alike.

Do the same but with bead-chain eyes and a short-shank hook to make a hook-point-up semi-weedless, semi-snagless fly for panfish. Yeah - a slow-drop killer pattern!

Have been using Chamois for 50+ years, even past it's movement factor can use it to sub for thing like biot body on some tie's, Just make sure to stretch it a little tight so when wet doesn't come loose.

Funny and informative! I'd say chamois is a material that's been used for quite a while, right? I remember reading about worms and grubs being tied with it years ago. But seeing you wave them in a glass of water and cut shapes with it is an eye opener. No pitchforks here Tim. Thanks

I use Chamois in a number of ties. It's been used since long before my time.

Dissing squirmy material is fine for most, but chenille? You might have done yourself in there. Those probably are pitchforks and torches coming your way

So...how many chenilles does it take to make one of those mops?

Chamois leather is not made from real chamois, at least, not for a long time now. It is generally prepared from lambs' hide. Just thought I'd mention.

Can't understand what the big deal is about using these materials. Tiers have been using chenille and other artificial materials for years. Most threads used today are synthetic. Most tiers are now using UV glues, lively legs etc. Had this material been originally developed for fly tying, nothing would have come of it! But because it was originated for use in mops, it has gotten a bad rap. To me it's a great imitation of a natural caterpillar. Green, brown, black, many colors of them fall or crawl into the water from trees and shrubs. They are a natural trout/fish food at varying times of the year. Even natural materials that come from dead animals are tied on steel hooks! I mean, come on.....

Personally it’s not hated, these are basically noob flies (anyone can catch a fish on them). But try using these flies and catching a trout when they are feeding on a certain insect you’ll have no chance. And all the people that use these mop flies religiously don’t know what’s going on and get frustrated cause they can’t catch a fish and then to proceed to break the balls of a seasoned fly fisherman (yes I have tied the mop fly and caught fish) and my take is go and work it out yourselves and don’t bust my nuts whilst I’m on the river or lake. I have watched some my noobs changing fly after fly after fly because they see other fly fisherman catching fishing when they can’t get a take on a rising fish. At the end of the day you’ll catch trout on them but you’ll never learn a thing in the end.

I see what your saying but I look at the mop the same way as a Midge pattern some times it could mean the difference between getting skunked or having a successful day especially after a cold front that brings a good bit of rain along with it. And yes it's a "noob" fly but my nephew who just started fly fishing at Christmas and my wife that just picked up fly fishing three weeks ago love the mop because for beginning fly fishers it's hard to gain confidence if your not occasionally having success. But ultimately enjoying the sport of fly fishing or tying is all that matters. Tight lines everyone.

As a occasional mop fly user I resemble that remark. With the operative word being occasionally! Other than that truth aside...you sir are 100 percent correct and I agree with your statement wholeheartedly. Learn ALL the trout foods that they eat...then a person can be a true trout fisher!

I'll rake a size 14 Purple Haze over any of those 'selective' hatches and nail fish. If not, then a Quigley will do.
