Magical Fairy Force was released by AtariAge a few years back and was a pretty big profile Homebrew for a console that doesn't receive too many. The fella's over at Video61 have been releasing new software for the console for years, but everybody else usually ports 8 bit stuff and calls it a day. So was Magical Fairy Force a shining example of what original content on the 5200 could and should be, or should people just stick to porting old 8 bit game? Lets find out!

We review all our games on a scale of 1 to 5 & here is what they mean:
5 is PERFECT! These are must own games for their consoles!
4 is Great! These games are worth playing and most people will like them
3 is Good. These games are worth trying but wont be for everybody
2 is Bad. These games might have a fan or two but aren't worth most peoples time and money...
1 is Garbage! Avoid these flaming piles at all costs!
We occasionally look at controllers and hardware and they are rated as Recommended, undecided, or not recommended. That should be self explanatory...

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us
Check out my written reviews and all of Vinnies 20 years of hard work here

Thanks for watching and please subscribe. It does way more than you'll ever know for me.

Your welcome. I can't wait for the next real piece of homebrew after experiencing this one! I'm thinking of giving Real sports Curling a try. It seems like such an odd idea but it might be really good!

I think the Fairy theme is great! We tend to see too many military-style games, IMHO, and it's nice to see something different. I'll be playing this on my Atari800MacX emulator so I'll be using my trusty old CX40 joystick, but luckily I did buy a couple of CX22 Trak-Ball controllers back in the day and one of them still works (the one still in its box didn't)! I don't quite understand the gameplay. It looks like a two-sided shooter of some kind, but with no interaction between the players. These are the sounds and graphics I know from my days programming my Atari 800 in the early-to-mid 80s. It's encouraging me to get busy to see how I can contribute to the retro experience. I've been hanging out mostly on AtariMania. Clearly I need to start spending more time on Atari Age!

Looks kinda neat. Would be cool if they did a 7800 port so i can play it on my 2600+

A 7800 version would be an awesome idea

Thanks for explaining the game play and mechanics. I had read descriptions for the game before and could never make any sense of it. This game seems unique. With a dearth of homebrews for the 5200, I will put it on my wishlist to support the 5200 homebrew scene. While it’s not the type of game that I prefer, there’s definitely enough there to have some excitement, and your pros/cons seem right on.

No problem. I never quite understood either until I played it and even then it takes a minute for everything to click. But like most Atari games it's not as complicated as I first thought. I would definitely recommend supporting this developer! I want to pick up the steam release because I think that would be fun too!

Pretty good 5200 fighter, it seems. I would’ve wanted this for mine, especially with that massive trackball… great review! The mug arrived, gonna try a review maybe 😅

Reminds me of Twinkle Star Sprites for the Neo Geo. Twinkle Star Sprites was a competitive shoot-em-up where scoring combos and building your attack meter would send enemies and obstacles to your opponent's playfield, and vice versa, in an attempt to overwhelm them until they run out of lives. Best of two rounds would win and move on to the next opponent. It also featured the same style of anime fairy character art.

More 5200 homebrew love! The Pork Chop character originally debuted in Phaser Cat's earlier 5200 game Ratcatcher.

I didn't see this one coming. I own a 5200 but really just want to focus on 2600 and 7800

To each their own but it's not a bad game really. I'd like to see more homebrew on the 5200 and less 8 bit conversions.

Atari in general doesn't get enough love. In general 5200 served its purpose by being arcade quality console and unlike the 2600 and 7800; the 5200 probably has the best track ball controler between the 3 systems. homebrews specially made for track ball would be a big home run for the system.

If this is available digitally, I could see wanting to play it on the 5200 core on MiSTer.

He has a pretty good looking port of Lock N Chase called Rob N' Banks. It is a shame the baddie sprites are all single color. I'm not sure he could have made the game to keep the number of sprites on a single scanline low enough to double up the sprites for multicolor.

It has a full color manual that helps a bit. The steam release seems to have a lot more story elements and I plan on getting it for just 5 bucks. Heck it might even go on sale eventually
