Magician reacts to Rebecca Herrera 2019 perform her mentalism act where she claims to have an out of body experience and read the chosen/hidden numbers for Penn and Teller on their show Penn & Teller Fool Us 2019. Rebecca Herrera has won a Fool Us award previously and is returning to try and do it again with her mentalist powers. I was fooled watching this performance, and I only have some guesses. This is Fool Us Season 6 2019. What did you think about this magic effect / mentalism routine?

The music playing once she was “in a trance” could easily have ques put in. A special system of only 9 different sounds for the 9 different numbers would be easy to blend into music like that. The answer wasn’t hiding in plain site but it was playing in everyone’s ears. That’s clever.

Not sure how possible this is but I think that she used reflections to her advantage. It was odd to me that she said flip the numbers to the ceiling and before she went into her “trance” where her head pointed down was looking at a shiny floor where with a mirror above the stave she could possibly see the numbers while they are facing up.

The sounds were rather abstract. And the counts of each sound didn't seem to match anything. But being abstract, she could have memorized 9 separate sound clips where she assigned a number to each. And each sound clip would have blended well in any order to appear to the audience that it was a single sound clip. Whoever was queuing up the sound didn't have to memorize which sound was what, but only to flip numbered switches.

REVEAL: Rebecca has what is called "relative pitch" in the musical world. This means someone was playing live music during her performance, likely a keyboard or sample pad. When she goes into "trance" the music starts by sliding up and then drops to a clear low pitch, which is now the "root" of the scale that the music is in, and Rebecca uses her trained relative pitch from there. Each of the notes played in the background music, from that point on, represents the scale degree of each number Penn chose. There are seven numbers in a scale, with the eighth number being an octave above the root and the ninth being an octave plus one (aka the second scale degree but one octave up). There is a lot of foliage effects added in the music to hide the shifting ambient notes but they are clearly there if you listen, know music theory, and have relative pitch which can require some training (Penn says in code "It's like calling someone's name in a crowded room; only they can hear it.")

The secret to this was using distinct sound effects that played along with the trance music. Each of these sounds were associated with a specific number 1 through 9 and they played the sounds in the correct number order. There were 5 numbers used and 5 distinct effects played during the trance. Right after hearing the last of the 5 sound effects played with the trance music, she wakes up revealing the number. This explains how when Penn said the secret was something we all experienced and in the open but were not aware of, like your name being called out in a crowded room.

Weird since he is definitely not the greatest of the two at magic, (his word paraphrased). That being said he can spank 9,999:10,000 actual magicians at their own game and come out on top because he’s a dirty clown college drop out carnie trash “talker”. That trumps almost all skill levels in magic because patter is absolutely the biggest part of magic and he has his reps in no doubt at all.

When when Ben said to like calling out someone's name in a crowd if the name is unique enough that only you would know and that the general crowd would not be familiar with, and she agreed to that assessment, it the sound presented in the trance music was definitely in an ordered fashion to match the numbers 0 through 9 or 1 through 9. And like any musician, a magician should be able to memorize those sounds

I doubt the sound would be when he is placing the blocks. That would only tell her what numbers were chosen, not the order. An auditory cue would have to be in the trance music. Also she didnt have gimmick shoes. "Bambi's friend" is Thumper, and Penn said it wasnt that. Also it cant be a mirror on the ground as Penn was standing over her and could've seen it. Penn also had every opportunity and reason to look up when placing the numbers. The other possibility would be light cues. Specific lights and or shapes projected onto the floor during the trance or just a light sequence after Penn had chosen his number.

Everyone heard the same sounds, but like someone having their name called, only they hear it. In other words, she knew the code, which I believe was counting between certain sounds. One sound starts and she counts till the next special sound is played. She repeats that until she has the entire list. Note, no numbers can be repeated in the sequence, so once she has the six, she can mentally lock that away knowing that the six won't appear again.

It was clearly the sounds of the blocks and the container. We are missing the full audio because of the equipment being used to film the show. Then brought over to KZbin. We are missing much of the highs and lows that you would get if you were on the stage. If you were sitting near her, you would notice each block has a slightly different sound when moved around. Think of it this way. Have you heard someone walking in a room or office and you know who it is just from the sound of their walk? Well, you can do the same thing with blocks by adding or removing wood from inside of the blocks to change the sound. I'm really curious about what type of wood she used (spruce maybe?). That's how she identified the individual blocks by memorizing their unique sound. Same goes for the wooden container. It was made with adding or subtracting wood. Possibly using a softer and lighter wood like Balsa inside the container to deaden the sounds. If you ever watch a Marine Boat Surveyor, you would see them carry a very tiny ball hammer. They use it to tap the side of the hull to listen to the sound of the wood. It's an indicator of dry rot and/or other things. Practice with a well-seasoned surveyor, you can learn what the wood is telling you. Clearly, Penn had a hunch and that why he first knocked over the blocks, then latter smashed them on the table. It's very jarring and it even messed me up. Rebecca was very good and clearly practice well as she didn't let Penn's obnoxious noise making mess her up. She knew the answer long before she started the trance. Well, that's my hypnosis.

Not reading other comments, but I "read" from his words "up there" that he spoke of a mirror in the ceiling (or a device at the ceiling which reads the numbers and gives back colors) and the mirroring floor showing the numbers which pointed upward.

anybody notice the highly polished black floor.? an appropriately located mirror suspended above the blocks would reflect back to the floor, especially since she demanded that the blocks face upwards. then she looked directly at the floor where we couldn't see if her eyes were open or not and since everything is aligned to her chair position and the block stand position only she could see the reflection. Reflecting twice, once in the mirror and once on the floor double mirrors the block numbers so it appears to her exactly as placed in the box

I do not think you can use any " special " electronic means when on P & T If you can use a remote vibrator and place it in a private spot with a person in the audience . Like Penn said , call out a name in a crowded room and you can hear . the most simple is some one is hand talking to her ....She had a friend in the audience last time . They showed her

You absolutely can use modern technology. They have guessed at listening devices before. They gave up with the guy with the phone charger that didn't need to be plugged in to charge their phone. They kind of complained that it could be done with some technology but since they didn't know the details then they were fooled...

Yeah I agree with you and some of the people in the chat. The music that was played while she was in the trance was what gave her the numbers. See the whole trance thing isn't necessary as part of the act. She could have just put her hands on her head and concentrated, then said the numbers. I know that some magicians would practice for month and even years just to master a trick. And that when something unnecessary is added to the trick it could be the heart of the illusion.

I'm no magician so Idk how she would do this BUT this trick could be slightly elevated and brought to a new level IF she had the last two digits backwards BUT THEN revealed the numbers to match what she said... it would be spectacular bc not only does she provide the illusion of divination but would also seemingly magically transfer the digits between two blocks

Mentalists like to play the angle that there might still be something real to what they do OR they try to limit their effects to things "done only in the mind". Doing a transformation like that while effective magic, in the eyes of many mentalists, would ruin the effect. I think in her given presentation of being a replication of a psychology experiment your ending wouldn't work, BUT I do think it could be a great ending with a different presentation.

Given the limited "range" of numbers one COULD generate from the blocks, is it a case of a one in n (n being less than 10) list of 5 digit numbers it could possibly be? Otherwise I was thinking the "person in the audience with the remote for the device" turns it off when SHE is scanned, so as to not reveal any device she IS wearing. If the number done by Penn is placed pointing to the ceiling, then she briefly looks up to "see" the number, when she comes out of her trance...sees the number, and tells Penn what it is! Is it combinations or permutations that does a list of all possible numbers from the blocks?

Everyone got this act wrong. The key to this whole act is when she asked him to turn the box toward the ceiling. When the blocks were turned upside down, they made contact with electronics that sent the ticketing number to a hidden earpiece embedded in her ear. Joe Tyson

It's in the music. Someone was performing the music live on a synth. She was listening for particular tones in particular places and the scale intervals were the likely means by which she was given the answer. As an example, listen for the first number '6'. Think of the NBC TV Network theme... N = 1, B = 6 and C = 4. Now see if one of the first tones you hear in the 'trance music' is not that familiar "B" interval - the 6th. It gets a little trickier because 2 and 9 are the same pitch separated by an octave UNLESS 2 is the major scale and 9 is made flat. I do hear a flat 2 not too long after the 6th interval and there is a definite 1 in there too. Keep in mind, the tones do NOT have to be in order. She could be listening for changes in just one of the timbres. Despite the fact that the trance music sounds very simple, there are many layers and some of those are likely there to mask and confuse.

So, when Penn hold her shoulder, while she was pretending unconscious and also, looking on the floor seeing the "reflection", try to read those numbers from a mirror at ceiling perhaps.
