Great video. Personally, I am not a fan of any of these tablet or phone routines. I just find it to be inherently unmagical to do a trick on a digital display, on a programmable device. Every app is a magic trick, if any app is.

Yea, definitely. I also feel Penn and Teller agree with you, too. I think he Fooled them. They were vague with giving reasons why he fooled them. Even the magician was like, 'Uhhh... No...?' I think Penn and Teller were basically just saying, 'We don't care about digital app magic, because unless you're a programmer, there's no way to know. So you lose by default.'

I'm not a big fan of "technology" magic because my 6 year old girl shows me things I didn't know all the time. Just feels cheap. Maybe in the era of everyone being very familiar with technology this kind of magic will be more impressive.

I know how you feel. Carter ran an earpiece under that turban 100 years ago. Don’t get me started on Promystic charging top dollar for stuff a high school robotics club can do. It seems to always come down to the too perfect theory... if there’s only one way to do it that’s how they did it. But really it comes down to the performer and how he uses the gimmick. It crushed my ego when Magic Balay fooled me with a thumb tip . I think if you can tell technology/ a gimmick is used that’s the problem , not the fact a gimmick is being used

that is one very nice routine . i am sorry he didn't get the trophy but still, i really hope people with power to put him in the right place will consider him as a very good magician. you should absolutely research phone magic cause it's a gust of fresh air. what we see in magic show with great magicians old guys is probably 10-15 tricks and 10+ variations of mixes of those. this kind of tricks can be considered novelty so it can bring an element of surprise on the stage.and like you said once, the average spectator won't spend his time disecting your routine, they will love the way you do it clean and nice and apparently easy but not really :) . very good Robert Ramirez :) .we need more original people like him.

I'm not a magician. But the software engineer in me can't be fooled by anything that involves electronics ;) My thoughts: Its not a regular phone. Its a "jailbroken" i-phone with a custom calculator app. Coming to the last part of the magic, notice how the phone is placed on Teller's hand without blocking the camera. That's because its running a modified optical character recognition program in background. It detects the number and makes it pop up on the screen! That's what Pen meant when he said - screen...shot - shooting the screen. OCR Except for erasing the 7777, you can't do any of this in a regular phone.

I think he fooled them. He did an excellent job of utilizing voice, shake, swipe, and type input features. I do not use fruity phones, so I cannot identify all of the swipe points, or identify the command after the voice input. But he did a decent amount of work to create a performance, that did probably use custom shake commands, and probably custom swipe commands. He should have used a charger cord.

A year late, but! "Utility is most mens' test of worth." This is not testing the worth of the man, but the man testing the worth of a thing, in this case the tree. He was going to chop it down because it had no apples--the tree didn't do anything for him. He was not the one who used the shade, so when those who used the shade asked him to leave it, he was still going to chop it down--the tree still didn't do anything for him. He only stopped chopping when he found the honey, which was something he could use--the tree now did something for him, so he left it standing. So the moral is, MOST MEN will judge something's WORTH by how useful or beneficial it is; its UTILITY, if you will. Merry Christmas.

ya...this whole subcategory of phone magic is a tragic field in that everyone knows that "this device can do more than I am aware of" When an presentation has a pre-programmed mindset of "what you are about to do is based on my ignorance of how my phone works" feels more shameful to the observer than it is awe inspiring. Perfect example...the high water mark of this presentation was when he divulged to the audience that the whole "removing 7s" was just how the phone worked. That was the "oh cool" moment in that we learned something. From there on out the act went downhill as he basically said..."ah ha...you didn't know about that 7 thing did you...well let me show you some other things you didn't know about your phone, but this time I am not going to tell you how they work"

So the app that allows the phone to remove 7s by touching also allows touching anywhere on the phone window where any area can all enabled to have this amd other similar functions. Perhaps that area of the phone he protects by holding the phone in there when he lets them depress the keys. 🤔 He kind of gave it away when he revealed this function to everyone. Utility refers to usefullness. I was beginning to expect it would point out the value of nature in what could have been very relevant today but he was pointing out the shallower assessment of the utility of nature only being recognised when it can be consumed directly, which is what has gotten us into this ecological crisis. The bees who live in the tree will provide him with honey, which to our basic survival instincts trumps everything else. Back then we weren't so short of sparrows so in fairness he wouldn't necessarily appreciate how much he'd miss them. Anyway... hope that helps. I really love that you share Aesop's Fables btw.

The problem is that even if he's doing it on the native calculator app (along with other native apps, re: screenshot), which I'm sure does take a lot of practice to do that smoothly, there's the nagging feeling that there's no way for us to know if that's true. (Penn's phone is probably clean but yeah, he didn't do that much on it.) Basically there's a too easy explanation for the bulk of it readily available. Doing stuff on a screen just isn't very impressive (by magic standards) by default.

I am sure that with 218 comments someone has explained utility is most men’s test of worth but it was easier to write this than read through those comments to confirm my suspicions. The tree proved to have a purpose beyond shade it provided him with honey and as such demonstrated utility. For this reason the man did not continue to remove the tree it became worthwhile in the mind of the man hence…utility/use being his personal and also most men’s measure for something being worthwhile. Interestingly this helps explain why in a fast paced and constantly changing world older people are separated and warehoused waiting to die as in such a society they are often seen as having no significant worth any longer. They are physically slowed by time and seemingly out of step with the way of things. Though I have been able to spend time in a society that honours its elderly….they typically live on with their children and take an active role in caring for the next generation while their own children spend time at work. Themselves having an ongoing purpose/function tended to be healthier and live on longer, the children seem to flourish are more fully developed as individuals, have a greater sense of society….perhaps there is more commonly honey in that old tree than not, and the moral should have pointed to looking more carefully before resorting to the axe.

"Utility is most men's test of worth" = the way most men check if something is worthy is by measuring its utility. That's my understanding anyways... the tree had value for the grasshoppers and sparrows, but not for the man, until he found honey in it, and now it's also valuable for him. Therefore, he had no reason to keep the tree before that finding. Just my 2 cents.
@pyratemage5 жыл бұрын

The part that messes up this trick is probably when he clears the numbers with his shake and flip. You can see him press the clear button which magically turns into the all clear button afterwards while he's performing it (no rewinds or slow motion needed). Or pointing out that his phone says AC while Penn's says C, after the switch Penn's says AC, in other words he just pressed C on Penn's phone... Thank god that the last time he actually gets the C button on there again, which is what he should've done the other times. Still you can see him press the buttons though. So I'm a bit meh... But that's my opinion on all of this kind of "magic", like I could probably make a duplicate calculator app that does all of this, but better, in just a few hours. So yeah, just meh...

I think he just multiplied the number because once you have a result it won't let you erase by swiping. The screenshot was the final trick. He screenshot the app with a zero and screenshot of the app with the numbers. He then went to photos, selected both (or more), then pressed slideshow with the dissolve effect. All he had to do was pass the phone underneath with the timing so it'd look like the numbers jumped. The slideshow would have eventually ended so he grabbed his phone back fairly quickly for this reason.
