Your mention of his use of music: he is actually an accomplished professional musician before he became a magician, therefore his love and great use of music. And it is even more impressive because he just severed his thumb tendons recently and recovered within 6 months even though the doctor said it would take at least 2 years. Everyone talks about how talented he is but i think people underestimate how dedicated and hardworking he is, imagine severing your tendons because you practice so much.
@lilRadRidinHood5 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong; I thought he said he'd CUT his own thumb tendons during a practice of a much more dangerous trick. I don't believe over-working in general can sever...stretch, sprain, even tear (?) but sever?

You are correct Lori, Shin completely severed both of his major contraction thumb tendons while attempting an illusion. I don't think people realize just how bad of a situation that is. 9 out of 10 will never regain function even close to what he has. And while his performances are supremely impressive the passion and will to overcome such a critical injury and in only 6 months is nothing short of a miracle!

When you mention duplicate, I went to find a higher quality to see the signature better, screen shot the card and enlarge if the signature are different in size position, they are the exact same card through out the show, even the ones in the coffee mug. From the video we can tell that he actually did something to the card that was pulled out, when he said "can you open the marker". I guess he just put two or more layers of transparent membrane onto the card. So the signiture was on the layers, and also he could get two or more same signitures on the different layers. The rest was to simply put the layers, which had signitures on them, onto some other cards. I don't really know how to demonstrate this in English though...

"Where does he get all the smoke from?!" 😂😂😂 Shin Lim's sleights of hand is near perfection...it is perfectlyrics executed IMO. Even many magicians can't catch it. He is so fast and have practiced so well, his tricks are flawless. 👌 People who say the judges and Terry are part of the script and played along, I don't think that's true. Why would they help the participant cheat? It's a competition that they have to work individually to win. If judges are part of the tricks, why even make it a competition and give $ awards? Doesn't make sense for ppl to think that.
@sleepingod3005 Жыл бұрын
Because it is not a pure competition. Most of them are gimmicked whatsoever. Not to cheat one another, but to give us the best viewing experience to get the most ratings possible. People can still vote. Maybe they use real votes or maybe also manipulated, at this point we can't tell for sure either. As for the prize money, let's just say it's like they pay the contestant for being their "actors and actresses".

@boazbar-david1826 жыл бұрын
Great video. The only explanation to this trick is having duplicate cards. Since Shin has already preformed this trick on liable shows, I'm certain Howey and Terry aren't in on it. That means Shin used some kind of gimmick to get the duplicates. In the act, the way Shin asks them to sign the cards looks very suspicious- after they pick a card he asks for the card back for no reason and does something to the card, he points exactly to where he wants them to sign, and the cameras show nothing. Something fishy happened there, but I'm not sure what! Pretty sure it has to do with the ink of the shaprie, but again, I have no idea. What do you think?
@JasonParkerMagic6 жыл бұрын
Yes! You know I noticed that suspicious behavior as well. Shin even does a top change if you look closely when he is working with Terry. But yeah... EXACTLY what you said... I'm not 100% sure why he does this. It could be he is using a deck with like 7 of the same card in a row to make for an easier classic force... and then he needs to switch it for a different card that is a special gimmick used for making duplicates. Yeah he has them sign on a specific area... and has them doing it right at the edge of the table. I know there are several duplicate signature card tricks for sale out there at magic websites.... i've never bought one so I don't know what technology is currently being used. But.... anyway its at least clear to me that he is indeed using duplicates. I don't like the one behind Howie's chair because it kinda screams that he had that particular duplicate card created before the trick even began.... :-|

THE KEY: The marker is the standard gimmicked dry erase ink Sharpie on the market. The secret is not that he cloned the signatures. The secret is that he erased the signature made by the judge. The deck is one way force deck in its middle. He has to swap the card after the judge picks it with a card previously signed on the opposite end. After the judge signs that card, under cover of the otherwise useless ridge on the desk to hide the real signature from the cameras, he rubs the real signature away and shows the prepared camera ready signature that exists on his duplicate cards and in the judge's cup, as preloaded by production. You can very easily tell that Howie signs the opposite side of the card to what we are shown. How he gets a signature in advance is either "pre show" (likely "rehearsals") or the production team got them for him (they absolutely partake in the setup by doing things like edits and knowing where the camera can't go) via some other means.

Little late commenting but i noticed especially on Terry's card the signature is in fact different every time, Shin had at least 3 duplicates of each card. That is why he told them where to sign on the card. And when he does Howie's card you see him put one on top but then bottom deals the card to Howie to sign.
@mahalayananda5 жыл бұрын
The thing is that he did this switching of the cards on Penn and Teller too with random audience participants and they dont accept pre-performance work. Of course there are moments when one can catch small things, but his artistry is amazing. I see him like a magicians magician. Something that all magicians can enjoy watching and admiring. A kind if unique style of presentation due to his background in performance music
@m.sierra52582 жыл бұрын
I am fairly certain they are duplicates, because there really isn't another explanation. The question is, where did he create the duplicates? Is it a copy he created on the fly? Two cards behind each other that print through when they signed? Although I think in Penn and Teller people stepped through the performance frame by frame and the signatures didn't match... allegedly.
@guimoraes-music57083 жыл бұрын

I couldn’t help but ho back and watch some of his earlier stuff and honestly have to say I’ve never seen anyone like him...he is a master! On your critique I would have to say that saying he’s using duplicates would mean that he is having the show help him with his routine and I don’t think that they would want to damage the credibility of their reputation and as a top talent show look like they are being dishonest with the audience. I think it comes off on your part a bit lazy in trying to explain the trick to us and I thought that I was going to get a more in-depth explanation from you being that you’re a magician. Also I am trying to walk a fine line on exposure. I want to talk about the act and give my thoughts, but I don't necessarily want to explain everything he did. (Penn & Teller on Fool Us often will just say he fooled us or he did not...and they don't stop and explain the method to the entire audience... which would be a bit of a shame.) Also nothing in my title indicates I'm going to reveal how everything worked. It is a magician reacting to another magician's performance. That's it! :) The earbud I was using to listen the performance video clip so it wouldn't be recorded into the audience for this video. At some points I forgot to remove it because I was focused on sharing my thoughts on the performance.

I think the cards in the cup and on the chair might be duplicates, but the others are not. Because in his original dream act that he performed for fism, the spectators were chose randomly and the signatures were less specific than Howie and Terry’s. No matter what Shin Lim is amazing and enjoy his performances so much

A lot goes into preparing for a magic performance. The fact that he pulled it off, however he did, is amazing. Thanks for the video. ♠️♥️♦️♣️

I think when he asks them to hold the marker he adds more of the same card that they have chosen and makes them sign more than 1 card

Does anyone know what is the name of that move at 00:09 where a card came back from the deck. I think I saw it from Noel Heath first

This is pretty much the same routine he did on his first appearance on AGT. He did it on Penn & Teller Fool Us as well. It's called the Dream Act, which he sells through various magic dealers.
@wampiroindoril5 жыл бұрын
In the original routine he has not a signed duplicate. For this particular show especially the cup thing, I don't know, but if he done the same way as before, the dream act has no duplicate signed cards.

Jason you are a magician bro .you gotta know how it is done. Seriously I mean is this a new tech in magic that you can dubble sign cards or real magic? Plz tell me my mind is blowing

3:58 I suspect it is a duplicate. He is holding 2 cards. The duplicate and a blank card. He insert the duplicate at his jacket. I am assuming there are 3 copies.

there is someone under the table for sure, to place cards under jury's chair at the start, to duplicate cards and for the smoke coming from under the table. at 5:55 he drop the plastic bag on the floor and the cards, the only way to have it in the cup at of the jury at end, is someone just pickd and placed it on the table. if you check at 6:18 there is no longer plastic bag on floor. for the rest tones of videos about all his tricks.

As a fellow magician and a fan of shin’s since Fool us, I broke down and bought dream and 52 shades of red. I HIGHLY recommend it! They’re available at shinlimmagic.com. Oh. He also sells kadabra. The distortion card in his 9 of hearts performance. Just saying. It’s worth the $ to see how his mind works. And you’ll fool yourself at first it’s so good! And these acts were kickers to those acts! He’s the best! 👏🏻

Yeah I would be curious to watch Shin's full explanation and reasoning for all the moves he chose to do and the sequencing. Would be very interesting. But I'm trying to slow down my magic purchases for now as I need to catch up on learning effects I bought in previous years first lol... probably a common magician problem. Yeah I saw he was selling Kadabra... it looks beautiful! Must be some highly elaborate construction to have all those pips moving around

Jason Parker I was the same dude. I own books upon books - I trust you have Erdnase and expert card technique. I hadn’t bought effects in a WHILE so I bought Shin’s effects. If you want a cheap buy before he won FISM, get Shinanigens. It’s a very different Shin Lim bc it’s prior to him even going into his first FISM (I believe he won 6th in the world and 1st in North America). And that was without Dream or 52 Shades. So while he’s reserved, he teaches well and you learn like 26 effects. And it’s like $20. That’s the first Shin Lim thing I ever owned. It was when he was on theory11. Anyways. I enjoyed your reactions. Plus your card handling is on point dude. Well done 👍🏻

Is it possible that he is creating a "carbon copy" of their signatures? He is very precise with his instructions about where to sign the card, plus both times he takes the selected card back before returning it again for the signature. You can see that he is adding something to the card while he is having them open the marker. This is more evident when he is interacting with Terry.

There were no duplicate cards. He performed this routine a few years back at pen and teller with randomly selected audience
@JasonParkerMagic5 жыл бұрын
tt6368 but it doesn’t mean he can’t have some way to create duplicate cards, right?
@matthewmarquis87325 жыл бұрын
So, about the duplicate card issue, Shin did something very similar to this routine his first time on Fool Us and, to my understanding, Penn & Teller has a strict protocol in place that keeps performers and audience from cross pollinating, so I don't think that multiple cards were in play.
@mc34295 жыл бұрын
My guess is the duplicate is being made with special pen with possibly special ink. while the person is signing it. He first has them pick a card. takes it from them kinda flips it around while he is learning what card it is. Then very smoothly, stacks a 2nd or 3rd under the original before he gives it back to them to sign. remember this is only a guess because the dude is a master!
