Magician reacts to the very first episode of Penn & Teller Fool Us 2011. Discussing how the origin of the show and it's beginning in 2011 filmed in London, England on a British television network with a different host named Jonathan Ross, who is a really funny guy by the way. I've reacted to Season 6 of Fool Us already and thought it would be interesting to go back to the beginning. This video shows the reaction of someone familiar with magic so you can see how someone in this field feels about these kinds of things! This is Fool Us Season 1 2011 s01e01. Were you watching when the first season began? I plan to go back and react to each and every episode... so come along with me for the journey! :)

It makes a lot more sense now why they pulled out this Elton John cut out! I remember thinking it seemed a little random why they would bother to do that just for a slight chuckle. But YEAH.. they totally fooled me! I feel pretty silly now... but THEY ARE professional magicians for ... what was it... 35 years at that point? Anyway really cool to be SO FOOLED by something I didn't even realize it until commenters below pointed it out! :)

I started watching a couple years ago. I think ive seen most of the older seasons but i never watched them in order all the way through. I mostly watched random episodes from KZbin. I can't wait to see what you think of some of the early magicians. Im sure you'll recognize a few of them. I like Jonathon as the host a lot. His humor was great and he wasn't as awkward as Alyson can sometimes be. Not to say I don't like Alyson either. As far as the trick they did. When I first saw it, my feeling was that they couldn't actually be using her real phone for everything. Mainly because I know I'm almost positive that earlier phones would stop recording video when getting a phone call like that. So her video would have been cut very early. Also, it seemed like they were playing a generic ring tone when her friend called the phone, and just used that same ringtone for the other "calls". It was way too loud and clear to be coming from her phone without a mic right next to it. Can't wait for the reactions to come!

Elton's mannequin and its chain around his neck ... I discovered it right after the phone flew into the bucket. With a borrowed phone, no one would dare. Interestingly, in this pilot show, Penn lied about his own "rules," because the fish box hadn't been in the audience since the beginning. When it comes to video editing, they are massively performed regardless of the promise, by deliberately omitting key moments. It's a shame for this format, with such well-known protagonists.

Awesome job Jason. Can’t wait I find this stuff really interesting. About the fish 🐠 trick. I think it was a separate phone in the box The reason that penn got her to call it was to know the ring tone. Then they set the ringtone on the phone in the. Box. I think teller had her phone all the time. He just swapped it out perhaps when the pulled the dummy phone out of the fish he swapped it with her phone that was in a baggy. 🤔 anyway great work on this video. ⭐️⭐️

I think it's great you're reviewing the earlier seasons as well. I'm really looking forward to your comments on some really amazing performances from the early seasons (and one or two bad ones)! However, when they say there's no tricky editing, they're right - no magic effect is being achieved by editing. However, occasionally, there's just *bad* editing. They have to edit the performances so they can fit into an hour-long show, and sometimes they cut a few seconds or so from the performance itself when it looks like no one would notice (you usually do, however). Also, I'm pretty sure they usually cut parts of the chat between host and magician after the performance and occasionally even stuff from the discussions between magician and Penn, it's very obvious sometimes. But the tricks are purely done by the magicians :-)
@JasonParkerMagic
@JasonParkerMagic 4 жыл бұрын
I have seen that in the 2nd or 3rd act (Michael Vincent), they say the magician has performed a deck switch right before spreading the cards on the table... and when I went back to review it... I saw they clearly EDITED OUT this part. It seems you have no chance at all to spot this move because it was simply cut out. :-| I would love to be proved wrong, but it seems like they ARE doing tricky edits....
@FollowFan
@FollowFan 4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonParkerMagic But did they do it intentionally to cover this up? I don't think Michael Vincent asked them to cut out the part when he switches the decks so his trick would work (also, Penn & Teller would see it), right? :-) It's just as I said - they cut stuff for time, and unfortunately sometimes from the performances as well, with results like this. But I don't think they do it to make a trick work :-)
@dismalthoughts
@dismalthoughts 2 жыл бұрын
@@FollowFan I don't know, a deck switch is what -- a few seconds? I find it hard to believe that they absolutely couldn't fit that in. I've heard more than 1 magician who performed on the show say that the performance was edited in their favor. Could be they're trying to be nice, could be that making the performance look better makes for better viewership, who knows? But I would sooner believe that some of these tricks were done with real magic than that a few second deck switch was selected to be cut purely for time's sake.
@JLilliquist
@JLilliquist Жыл бұрын
They have also cut out parts of a routine, not just a few seconds of over a minute such as Amazing Alana which did the full routine but the head but was cut even though they later made jokes about it. You can see the full routine of her KZbin channel from another performance that was not edited. Also, there was a switch of camera angles to distract you during their own trick.

Was there a possible phone switch when they brought out the Elton standee, and Penn pulled out the necklace to knight Sir Elton, his hand with the phone goes behind the standee. Possible switch there, even tho they show the phone recording but this would explain the throwing of the phone out of the cup without worry of it being damaged if Teller didn't catch it. As far as it being in the fish and box, I have no idea. Altho, I found it weird that we couldn't hear Emily talk on the phone, yet this woman next to the box seemed to have a mic near her and gives the answers needed, that the box had been there since the beginning of the show.... really, was it really there the whole time? Also, there is some time that we don't see the fish, when Teller dumps the contents out on the table. I'm no magic expert but I seen enough vids to watch for things that are misdirecting and when important things are out of view, that gives a magician an opportunity to do their dirty work.

I like the idea of your phone switch theory. It would also explain why Teller walked so far up to the audience: they probably had maybe one or two common phone models that they had doubles for, and thus needed a volunteer with a matcing phone to perform a switch.

My take? They had her friend call to clone the ring tone and hid the phone somewhere it would not be heard if ringing. Sent a signal with that tone to a speaker in the box when the second call came. Switched the fish when he flipped the box for a fish preloaded back stage with the correct phone, probably prepped in the table? Third call was to the correct phone.

They do this trick a lot. They've changed it so they don't have to throw the phone in the air this way the audience doesn't see any of the method. The person with the phone does get to see everything except how Teller swaps the fish in the box (yes, it's the old fish swap trick). I love how even an experienced magician at first considers the possibility that they rig the audience so a stagehand can get to the box without being seen. Magicians will always settle on the easiest solution, rigging a theater with a hidden passageway is hard, swapping a fish is relatively easy.

I watched them do this live a few years ago. They check ringtones from the audience before the show even starts, so they know they have a phone that can match a pre recorded ring tone. Obviously the ring from a phone in fish in a Styrofoam box would not be loud enough for the audience to hear the way they did, so a pre recorded sound gets played through a speaker somehow in our near the box. Then the other switches can take place with the phone on stage as you speculated. I believe they also played back video from the volunteer phone that showed some backstage antics too, or maybe i'm remembering a KZbin posting from one their volunteers from another show. After I saw them live, of course I checked KZbin to find other versions of their tricks...

Even though the (UK only) first season of Fool Us dates from 2011 it didn't get it's US debut until 2014. In fact, the UK version seemed to be a one-and-done deal. It's only once it hit these shores and proved to be a hit that it turned into a full series that's why there's such a huge gap between the filming of season 1 and season 2. And Jonathan Ross is basically the David Letterman of the UK but has a more varied and interesting career. Personally I think the best thing he ever did was the Incredibly Strange Film series in the late 80s/early 90s. Basically, he's a huge star in the UK and doesn't need to do Fool Us. And as many have said, since he probably is very busy in his homeland he likely saw no reason to fly over here to do the hosting gig (probably for less money too)--even if they likely film the whole season in just a few days.
@JLilliquist
@JLilliquist Жыл бұрын
Well, I think he was still on for Season 2 and they shoot everything at once. That is why their clothes never change, it probably takes 3 days to shoot a whole season and yes they will shift the order of acts around or swap them from appearing on one show to another. It could be based upon time or what if three acts in a row fool them, they will move at least one to another episode, etc. I have no problem with that.

Neat to see the original show. I don’t think the fish would go over so well with American audiences, but I think it wasn’t so shocking for the English people. I like it when humor is mixed with magic - P&T did a good job.

Yep, they Slydinyed her right! Oh, and hypothesis two seems the most likely. Obtaining a sample is why they had Emily ring Steph right from the start.

I've been watching since the 1st season and it took me forever to get used to the switch from Jonathan to Allyson. At first she was really annoying and cringey, but I feel like in newer seasons she finally settled into the show and is by now considered the iconic host.

The object in the fish trick has been explained by Penn and Teller on one of the American late night shows. I think they used a watch at the time. It was actually placed inside the fish. And at this time they were not putting it in a plastic bag first. So... eeew. It might have been done on Letterman or something like that. There is a handoff at some point and a stage hand takes the watch and jams it inside the fish. Penn and Teller later retrieve the fish and pull the watch out again, and the member of the audience then confirms that is is actually their watch.

I think Teller loaded the phone into the fish when he put it on the table.

I think Teller switched fish as he was taking out the tray. Not sure how they prevented the real phone from ringing but there are a couple possibilities.

As far as the trick: they picked a person with the kind of phone they had in the fish. The phone in the fish was just a speaker which played back the ring tone which they recorded when she played it. Teller muted her phone before he pocketed it when he reached for the gloves. Phone switch at the very end.

I think Penn was throwing a prop phone and her phone (selected for being suitable model) was already smuggled off the stage with sir John.

Jonathan Ross is one of the best paid television presenters in the UK and had his own lucrative chat show in the UK at the time; so I guess Alison was brought in because she was cheaper and "Wossy's" schedule meaning he couldn't keep flying from London to Vegas. P.S Eamon Holmes is a TV Presenter known for being a bit chubby, so the "massive stakes" thing was basically a cheap fat joke :D

I haven't read all the comments, so maybe someone else has asked this, but are you SURE that it was the lovely Stephanie's phone that Penn tossed into the bucket? That would be a pretty good misdirect. Hmmm....
DEFINITELY NOT HAPPENING ON MY WATCH! 😒
