I personally don’t think they have genders, and just exist, if given a name pre-built, that’s the gender, but if there isn’t, they don’t have one, you just call it engine or somethin’. In Thomas, I guess it’s just what name is given, and if the engine don’t like it, it could just change it or just go by number
@ThomasSirHandel5 ай бұрын
That would explain it. If given a name before first fire, the engine is that assigned gender. Another idea if the vehicle does not have a name, the vehicle could take the gender of who ever first starts it up.

Gotta be honest, I’ve never really thought about it that hard. To me if I was creating a Thomas character, I would just go with whichever gender I thought best fit the kind of character I was trying to make or just picked randomly, worked on the design, and then would decide whether or not it fit the character once I’ve finished with the concept art. If it doesn’t fit, I just make a few minor adjustments and go from there.

I literally created my own Skarloey Railway OC that's an Alice class engine named Balladwail few days ago. Not saying I predicted this, but I did wanted to create an female engine that could work on Skarloey with her own unique backstory. The fact that I came to the same conclusion is pretty fascinating. Also, I am shocked you forgot to mention LMS Fowlers 3F nickname "Jinty" being female as a loophole. Their name literally comes from female comic strip character from the the time (which while I don't see it at all) could be used for headcanoning Jinty as a female.

Here’s how I do it: Let’s get locomotives with Women names or nicknames or at the very least Women sounding names/nicknames out of the way. I don’t know how to Handle D&RGW 491 “Peaches” at the Colorado railroad museum because She does have an actual name under the cab and it’s definitely a male name but I’d have to find it because I forgot it. I would say that male names can be pretty common if you dive deep into it, but given that Steam locomotives (or just vehicles in general) are often called “she” it’s definitely gonna be hard not to miss. Next is Streamlined locomotives and locomotives with side plates with the exception of those with male names like NYC’s Commodore Vanderbilt or the LNER’s Sir Nigel Gresley. Reason for the streamlined part being included is, like side plates, there is a specific part called the Side Skirt on the locomotive. I guess you can count the Semi Streamlined locomotives or locomotives like the Reading T1s. Locomotives who have names after a streamlined locomotive with male name exceptions or vice versa. Take the Santa Fe 3460s for example, the first of the class, 3460 “Blue Goose”, was a streamlined locomotive and since the entire class was named after her they would all be female unless they have a male name or nickname and vice versa. And by that logic, classes named after women or classes name after males. I don’t know how to handle locomotives that originally had something that had to make them female and then got something like a Male name or nickname later on like the LNER “Golden Shuttle” later Dwight D Eisenhower. It either had to be male their entire life or it was female but became male. Everything above applies to diesels as well and pretty much every other vehicle/piece of rolling stock. There are a couple vehicles that can have a mix of genders however so I’ll be talking about those next. Vehicles that have more than 1 engine (airplanes don’t count) or combining 2 vehicles together. In some cases, one side can overpower the other like in the Big Boys or in any Streamlined articulated like a good percent of the PRR duplexes but for the most part it’s pretty even between the two sides. Double decker vehicles count because it kinda looks like you put two things together. Also in this case some sides can overpower the other like the Airbus A380 being called the King of the Skies or the 747 being called the Queen of the skies. But for the most part it’s a perfect balance. DMUs, EMUs, subways, etc. count as well. Right now I’m debating on locomotives with steam tenders should count or the tender should just be alive. But yeah that’s pretty much it for how I make it. When I’m being technical and treating a vehicle as anyone would I call it “she” but when I’m talking about if they were alive I call it by what I see it as.

I've thought about how Ladle wagons fit into the category. A pregnant woman is supporting not only herself, but also the weight of the baby. And a well wagon ladle, the wagon is supporting both its own weight, and the weight of the ladle, so well wagon ladles are female. Now, wagons that are just ladles on a single frame, that could just be a male.

I usually gender locomotives based on either pure vibes or if the locomotives existing name sounds Masculine or feminine and since I have a proposed Trainz Series of my own sometimes I name locomotives after Characters from fiction for example I have a USRA Heavy Mikado in my Series named Washington but she's female because I named her after Washington from Azur Lane Another example is a Virginian Railway Class MB Mikado also in my series named Marisa as she's named after Marisa from Touhou Project Also I see most steam locomotives as female and diesels as male but there are a few exceptions as one of the Erie Triplexs in my series is male named Jason and 2 twin Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 C-C's specifically the hood units like Southern Pacific 9010 named Prinz Eugen and Bismarck after Prinz Eugen and Bismarck also from Azur Lane. However depending on when the episode they are in takes place, sometimes they are not referred to by that name but sometimes a different name or sometimes road number depending on if the character they're named after exists when that episode takes place for example if Marisa was in a episode that takes place during the Conrail era she wouldn't be called by her name as Touhou Project didn't exist prior to 1997 however this doesn't apply to Washington and all the other Locomotives named after Azur lane characters since the ships they're named after do or did exist at that time
