Thanks you for a non commercial, honest candid review. Yes in most cases any ultra high end speaker system will not perform to its potential with sub par electronics but now we know that those Magicos particularly are 'not your friend' :). So still your input is invaluable. Id say though that yes for the speaker of this size your room IS small.

Great content Jay!! First time on the channel! Subscribed. I just attended AXPONA over the weekend and heard some great music produced by some great audio systems! (I also heard and enjoyed the Magico M6's kid brother, the S3 at the show.) What I have always found challenging, is when a so-called "affordable" speaker system is paired (at the show or in a showroom), with amplification and other electronics that is 10 times as expensive. In that case, it's impossible to know what they would sound like in your home with your existing components. When you have high-end speakers like the M6 which are nearly $200K, you're likely going to need to upgrade EVERYTHING to get the most out of them. But when you do... oh my!! That's some serious fun!!

Great review! My Magico's gave me the same problem. Did the room over, changed 3 high end amps, got a new DAC, went through two voltage stabilizers. Put them in two different rooms. My best sound came with 12 foot ceiling in a 15 x 24 ft room. Needed a ceiling cloud and room dampening to catch rear reflections. They are very expensive speakers. I still have them in their crate for my next try at them. Good luck Jay!
@markhampton7559

Sounds like you need cables, with EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT shielding (probably copper) with the Magico's. Now Magico's have the carbon fiber built into the cabinet, to reduce internal EMI. Older versions used mostly aluminum, which using aluminum for shielding makes the sound bright. With the Magico's you probably want your cables to have more copper shielding, to give you a warmer sound. Does the speaker sound less bright is you listen closer to the speaker? If so, that tells you that your room is more of a problem.

Interesting video and definitely enjoyable. I heard these speakers at Munich expo 2019. I was really eager to hear them after all 9f the gushing press I had seen of them. Well, after 30 seconds I said, i don't know how to describe it, but it has the driest sound I've ever heard. Clarity, check. Detail check, but it just sounded well dry. I still to this day can remember how I felt. I stayed for about a minute more and said to my wife, let's go. Weird, I guess, but that's why hifi is great, so many flavors.

Have you ever read the fable regarding the emporer’s new clothes? I get the feeling that the Magico speaker was made by the emporer’s tailor. No speaker should be that difficult to optimize and if it is, I suspect that the ancillaries are compensating for inherent flaws in the speaker.

I have speakers that are very revealing. They're good at exposing the flaws in audiophile equipment. To hide the flaws in old low quality recordings, using natural sound equipment that still sounds good on revealing speakers can be a solution. You won't get the detail and accuracy. But having that option for poor quality recordings of good music makes sense. The music of the 1970's to 1990's was engineered for solid state natural sound equipment and that may be what it sounds best on, especially old rock recordings. The trick is finding a source for these recordings that doesn't get destroyed by a high end system.

Your'e feeling is correct: the room is too small. That's what a serious closed system does for You. Take a good look into diffusers and bass absorbing (Helmholz), there are good kits avalible. Conditioning: try a transformer 1:1 say 2 or 3 kW, that is one of the best and most simple ways to separate from the grid.

Hi Jay, I've look a some videos you did and the kind of gear you have. This, M series from Magico are like the Nagra, Audio Note, Spectral Audio and speaker wise, Reality Audio, Marten, are all, do things that no other brands can do. They are the last step for an audiophile on his journey. One has to understand each move, components interaction, and YES, they will let you know how stupid or not worthy of them you are quite fast. But, once dial in, NO OTHER electronics or speaker will do what they are capable of doing. Keep on...

1:-They hammer with clarity. As you would expect with such a speaker. 2:-They need high power because they sound so clear you can dump power in without distortion. 3:-Use a good amp as they reveal crap amps. Kind of what I would expect from a VERY clear speaker.

I know that Magicos speakers are very demanding from electronics. But do acoustic treatment of the room, especially first reflection points - left, right, back wall, celling, floor and less importand front wall behind speakers. After you fix that and still have too bright sound, you do start trying different electronics and cables. I had simmilar problem - corrected with first reflection points, other place to set speakers, less toe in, few cables and im home almost. Last problem is room size. I neeed a bigger room, cause my is really small.

I like what you do and believe me I appreciate the effort it takes to set stuff up. I commented on the impression of glassiness with the Essence "sounding poor" especially on massed voices and crescendos which you appear to have heard it yourself. 2) I had left a KZbin message recommending that you use a power conditioner but removed it as I didn't want to upset you or take your channel somewhere you didn't want it going. I recommend Airlink Transformers from the UK, they will build and ship you whatever balanced mains transformer you need, and they can build you something that can supply as much current as your circuit breakers will allow with additional filtering if you want, the BBC and studios often use them. You could start using 240v if you don't already. Hip hip hooray.

If your power supply comes from a hydroelectric power plant, it's going to sound bright and harsh. Power conditioners can minimize this issue though. Coal-fired power plants put out the warmest and most analog sounding quality power. Nuclear power plants usually generate the most neutral sounding power. In order to get the best soundstage, the humidity level should be around 40% to 50% and make sure the system is around 250m above sea level.

For the room here is the deal this speaker requires at minimum of 100 cubic meter, that means more if possible with a 14 to 16 feet ceiling height - consult an acoustic expert. Engineer Mike, cheers and great show ... go to acoustics room size rather than changing electronics please; great try in every case, cheers; M

From the camera perspective, it looks like the room is too small and needs dampened surfaces.

Magico's very over rated. You should never need a video on the cons on an over $10K speaker system. Tannoy, ATC, Joseph Audio, etc., much more plug and play high end speakers and an audiophile doesn't need to have all this stress. I heard the Magico's at THE Show a few years ago and I did not understand the fuss. They may have been set up incorrectly but they were not impressive to say the least. This video while comprehensive and well done, tells you all you need to know.

Your comment about the room not enabling your speakers to shine reminds me of when I bought my KEF Blades. But what you should also keep in mind is that some of these big boy speakers require to try out different listening distance and also the distance between them. I used to listen to my former speakers 12 ft away and they were also 12-ish feet away from each other. After experimentation, I listen to them 16 feet apart and they are positioned 10 feet from each other. I know that experimenting on speaker placements can be complicated with speakers weighing 140lbs+ each but it’s even more critical on these big boy speakers than on « regular » big speakers. By the way, I’m using my KEF Blades with Audia Flight pre & power amp, really like those although much more modest in price than your gear. If you have the opportunity have a listen on those, they are very surprising and quite unique in their sound signature. Not better or worse than other high end equipment, just unique in what qualities they show. In high end equipment, after a certain price tag I feel there are very few flaws in almost all amplifiers and just different design and sound signature choices. These Audia Flight amplifiers are for sure offering something very different from other manufacturers for all things considered a reasonable price tag (around 20k-ish USD here in Europe)

Wow! Stop making up excuses for that speaker. At that price point that speaker should be able to sing with any high current amplifier. No matter how big or small your Room is... Plain and simple.

Mark Smith You clearly dont know what you talking about. "...speaker should be able to sing with any high current amplifier." That can do any cheap to moderate priced speakers. Guy is complaining on brightnes in room which isnt acoustically treated at first reflection points. The more speakers are reaviiling the better they are. Its just that simple in hi-end. If you dont prepared for highest class electronics and acoustically treated room, you just dont buy to expensive speakers. It is simillar to cars. It isnt enough to have money to buy Ferrari, you have to be rich enough to upkeep and maintaince of that car. Fuel, tires, insurance, service etc. The better the speakers, the more demanding they are - especialy if they are big floor standers, cause not only they're demanding quality sound, they need also high current and low impedance handling ability.

@@sheerenergy8602 Sorry dude, if you know anything about a high end audio and acoustics treatment, you would know that reflection points don't affect brightness on a tweeter they cause distortion and fatigue in the sound.

@@MarkSmith-rr8vk Again you dont know what you talking about. Listen to Jays voice which he recorded in his room. The voice is very lively, bright. Ask him to record claps in that lively room and next after the treatment the first reflection points. And then check how it sounds. I have berillium tweeter myself which was bright. But after tretment of the room, it isnt bright any more. And Jays voice is from his mouth not the magicos tweeter. I prooved you wrong in every way. In first reflections you get damping part of the tweeter energy.

@@MarkSmith-rr8vk Fatigue is made by brightness, and you can damp it with treating first reflection points. Another damping fabric you can use is felt around a tweeter like in LS 3/5 and grills of the speaker. It also can change the sound from bright to warm and less fatiguing. Edit "No matter how big or small your Room is... Plain and simple." Again you wrong- it matter a lot how big the room is. The smaller the room the stronger reflections are and quicker reflections are. Its basics of acoustics. You're a grennhorn.

Dont worry, your room is pretty bad. The treatments will really turn it around for you. That isnt too much speaker, sizewize but you'd need brick walls and concrete foundation to do it justice. Youll eventually move away from big bass if you stay in that room. But thats ok, all part the journey.

PREPARE YOURSELF!!! First of all lets get to the most important thing about purchasing hi-end audio equipment. The hi-end shop people should know whether you're serious and knowledgeable. Most important is confidence in knowing that they really care and will spend time with you. Asking you about your budget is one thing, but about the LISTENING ROOM?? They should know the correct package and then leave you to decide. If not confident, then WALK AWAY.
Why did i let go of the Magico M6?
