Hi Thorsten, your videos are always very interesting. I also had leica analog cameras, I am almost 60 years old. Always in my professional life I was surrounded by "buttons". When I see someone your age saying that these buttons do not interest me, I see clearly that you mean, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS. I've already seen a lot of people my age say that with Photoshop. I have only Fujifilm cameras currently from the X series. X100S-XE1-XE3-XT1-Xpro1 and those buttons are wonderful. Being able to adjust those movies that we used to use from Fuji in analog, wow, I enjoy as a child. If you must spend hours looking at the manual, and adjust toto as you want, but thanks to wonderful KZbinrs like your talking about Settings everything is easier. It's just my opinion as a former audiovisual professional. By the way I sold the Leica M6. I love Fuji. I love the Q button.Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the video. My original plan was to shoot a Fuji X-Pro2 until I I could buy a Leica digital rangefinder that I liked. After I purchased the Leica M10, I was going to sell my X-Pro2 but was surprised to discover that I really prefer to use the X-Pro2.

6:40 That new features guide is for the v2.0 firmware update, not the xpro2 update from the xpro1. However in line with what Thorsten says, it’s great for users as large firmwares come out, you get an update manual. I do like his idea of a manual for previous users, perhaps a web link.

Nice view on the X Pro 2 from a Leica aficionado. Looking forward to your next video on the X Pro 2 Love your magic words on 4:37 - Anything on a camera that doesn't have anything to do with exposure basically does not belong on the camera !!!! SO TRUE !! Thanks for sharing.
@at0167 жыл бұрын
I felt compelled to comment exactly because of these words and after some time in my self-taught journey in photography and as an owner of several Fuji cameras to date I couldn't agree more. After reading through manuals and trial and error I find myself not messing around with the menu at all. It took some time to get it figured out though. I think Fuji somehow is aware of this situation and are trying to fix it with the "MY" menu in which you can basically throw just the configurations you might need to adjust (if any) on top of all the dials and buttons.

Looks great Zvonimir- my style, however, is to mix color up with b&w. The decision to use color is dependent on whether it contributes or distracts from the composition or storytelling. So a mono only camera doesn't work that well for me.

You're absolutely right Thorsten. I shot with a Fuji XE-1 for quite a few years and loved it. But then I bought the X-Pro 2, and in less than a month I was so fed up with the menus, and the menus within menus within menus, that I sold it and bought the Leica M-D. I absolutely love the M-D, been shooting with it for over a year now, no menus, pick up and shoot. I am a bit nervous though as a friend wants me to shoot their wedding and I will have to use the Leica M-D.

Hi Thorsten, That was a nice little review. Thank you. Brands like Fuji, Sony et el have to appeal to a wide user base, which is why they're a 'bit' overloaded with features. The good thing about the Fuji is that once one has taken the time to set it up, then there's very little reason to use the menu. At least the 3 exposure parameters are all available on dedicated external dials, unlike most modern cameras One thing from your video, the 'new features' guide is actually talking about the stuff they added to the camera via a firmware update since it was first released! The original X-Pro1 is a very simple camera by today's standards, and still has a big fan base for it's simple yet quirky slow nature and slightly more "organic" (for want of a better word) colours. I think this is normal that some prefer the older camera, the M9 has a similar cult following Looking forward to reading and hearing more.

Hi Thorsten, I am new to Leica having just bought an M9 (sensor replaced) and 35 Summicron f2. I am a long time Fuji X-Pro1 user and feel that the X-Pro1 sensor delivers more film like images than the newer X-Pro2. That said the 23mm lens I use is the f1.4 version which more equates to the 35mm f2 Summicron, you should try the f1.4 version it is a better lens. Ironic really that you are just finding Fuji whilst I am just finding Leica. Looking forward to seeing your views after longer use, will it stay in your arsenal? BTW your "Why the Leica M9 is so unique" video was instrumental in my decision to go for the M9 and so far I don't regret it. Thanks.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that the Fuji is not a Leica. My everyday kit is two Leica M10's (and before that two M240s and two M9s). The Leica Q, Leica TL2, Fuji is/was great cameras to try and use, but not the everyday kit.

@stevelink217 жыл бұрын
Greetings! Regarding the alleged “watercolor/worm” effects you mentioned, as a Fujifilm X-System landscape and product photographer, I can say with some authority (from 3 years experience in this system) that I have created some superb 24x36” poster prints of detailed landscapes with mountains, trees, and other foliage; There is no evidence of that; rather, only great detail! I use Photoshop or Iridient Developer for post processing. I think those “effects” may have been found when using an inappropriate post processing technique or software. Good luck to you!
@asf11877 жыл бұрын
it's actually pretty easy to combat that effect. it happens if you sharpen photos the same way you would a bayer sensor. increasing detail rather than sharpening amount avoids the "worminess." I use an X-Pro2 and have been shooting landscapes lately. At first I was so frustrated and thought about switching systems again, but after doing some reading about the topic I figured out how to get better results. A quick google search will help you find the articles in question

How Leica lens design is not just a cold mathematical calculation but also an artful thought process. Thorsten you have conveyed more clearly than everyone why you use a Leica camera and lenses. While there are a lot of reviews of the Fuji X-Pro 2, yours was very relevant in that you talked about the colours of the images right away ( How natural, tungsten and LED light affect the image individually and combined ). I found your review interesting and refreshing. Thanks for this. You may come to appreciate the WR feature of the X-Pro2 and your 23mm lens in weather conditions that Leicas traditionally don't like. I also have an X-Pro2 and two of the "Fujicron" WR f/2 lenses-- the 23 & 50mm. Both lenses are very good, although I believe the 50mm has much better "pop" and micro contrast. However, the lens I've been using more and more on the X-Pro2 is the Leica M mount Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4. I am truly loving this lens on the Fuji. I'd thus be willing to wager that not all Leica glass is wasted on the X-Pro2 and would be interested to see if your opinion on this changes over time.

My journey to the Fujifilm X100S was when I wanted a lighter camera to carry everywhere, which I wasn't doing with my bigger DSLR. The X100S introduced me to the style of older rangefinder cameras with their easy to see and use basic exposure dials. Later, I returned to shooting emulsion film and picked up both a Leica IIIf and Leica M3 with a few vintage lenses. Without the X100S, I may not have opted for the vintage Leicas.

tx very much, mr von Overgaard. if you do not mind me asking a beginner's q: when u use that white balance card (12:42) to get color right: is the light that is reflected by that card (assuming this is what makes the card work) a sort of average representation of all the light that one wants to deal with? again, thank you.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Yes, to get neutral colors you would have top pick up the light of the main subject. In front of the face, and NOT unwanted reflections from the blue sky, a yellow wall to the left, etc, but the overall light that hits the face. The light is distinct different in sunshine and in shadow, and in each different location in a street. When I walk about photographing in daylight, I will usually set it to auto white balance. Onlywhen I want precise colors, I will set the WB manually with the card (a portrait, a product photo, architecture, etc). Someone said here that "when you shoot raw, it doesn't matter". But the way it DOES matter is that if you don't set the WB, you will have to guess and adjust the raw file without knowing the right colors. With the WhiBal card you get a standard neutral color setting and can make artistic changes to that.

Hello Thorsten. The reason I am interested in seeing the Fuji-Leica comparison is that in my experience each camera has its own color palette. They render colors in their own default way. There is difference in Panasonic versus Fuji, or Sony versus Olympus. And although all color rendition can be tweaked in a different direction it takes quite a bit of work to do so. In the past, photographers used different films for their pallete and characteristics, i.e., Kodachrome, versus Ektachrome, etc. The digital Leica has its own way of rendering colors. That is what I am interested in. By the way do you typically rely on the JPG or do you always use the RAW (Leica DNG) to arrive at the final image?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Yes, each new version of sensor (even within the same brand) renders colors their own way. If you then edit the pictures "your way" they may eventually end up looking the same despite the sensor difference. You could also have a sensor you just can't tame and get your look from. The M9 had very distinct colors because Leica tuned it to look as close as Kodachrome as they could (the did the same with the DMR digital back they made with Imacon and Kodak for the Leica R9). The M240 was different, and the M10 is tuned towards the M9 colors again. Ironically, the colors of the sensor is to a very large degree defined by the camera profile used by LR and other editing software (which translated the sensor data to colors).
@richardrivera22337 жыл бұрын
Interesting info: The TL2 camera system makes use of the same Maestro II technology as is used for the Leica SL camera, and DNG files are 14 bit as well. A TL2 menu option allows the user to choose compressed or not compressed.
@peasantrobot7 жыл бұрын
For the Fujifilm colors, you must have experience in using Fujifilm color emulsions. If you like them and want that look, then there are the film simulations. As you know, a film is not always about the perfect reproduction of the colors. And with experience, you know which emulsion (Kodak, Fujifilm) to use in a specific moment of the day or night or for a specific type of photography. Many of us have had enough about how the "real" colors are looking today in a very polluted environment. So, we enjoy specific emulsions of film. Even you are altering the colors in a post processing program to get the look you desire. Try to find that look in a specific film emulsion (not digital simulation).
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
I agree. When I talk about colors, I'm mainly talking about the raw colors as they appear in Lightroom. And Capture One as well. I generally don't use filters myself, and I don't use JPG presets in camera.

The WhiBal® card you can find at their website whibal.com or BH photo and similar. It's the neutral tone of the grey that is important, not that it is grey. They added black and white, centimeters, inches and other stuff ... well, nobody knows why. It's the neutral are of the card (which happens to be grey) you use to "calibrate" the sensor to natural colors.

It's good to try it even if you are a leica user. The bottom line is to use the Fuji x-pro 2 with the leica lens for different photographic results?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
My bottom line is that Fuji with Fuji lenses are a good result. Fuji with Leica lenses are mostly not a great result because the Fuji lenses works great with the help of software correction for the lens.

Im just curious as this Video title Fujifilm X-Pro2 vs Leica, i wonder which Leica model camera is the Fujifilm X-Pro2 counterpart in terms of quality shot and over all photo results.

My pocket in trip: Leica MP Film (2003), Leica M9M , and X-Pro2. Other than 1 or 2 Fuji zoom / WR lens will standby on journalist scenes, every Leica glass always give promising images, incomparable. In terms of Mechanical Perfection, a Leica M body truly makes you feel that you are the one to blame if something is not at best during the shuttering. This feeling projects more and more in the field and motivates you to a sense of duty to improve your skill. Leica refers to fundamentals. However, I must thank Fujifilm dear Engineers and (budget controller) for putting all things together with improving qualities that is very difficult from a company with history. Genius move and the history will be made, on some day the game is changed. Hybrid-VF Patent is still on yours, Fuji. Don't let this XPro ideas fading out. Get an Hrybrid-Perfection model and see how Leica dance with that.

You pay a lot of money for the extra perfection from good enough camera to really perfect camera. Personal choice if one is willing to go all the way, and no blame for doing either.

Hi, It is possible to use Fuji lens on Leica's body? How does it work with a rangefinder? I know that I cant focus with Fuji lens on Leica trough rangefinder, but can I focus trough LiveView?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard2 жыл бұрын
If you can find a Fuji adapter and you use a Leica M240, M10 or M11 with Live View you would be able to focus it.

Try also the X-100F with the 23mm fixed lens with a leaf shutter you will be surprised.

More considering going up in models. I tired the X-100 when it came out, vrery briefly, and didn't feel attracted.

Sir you got it wrong about the Fujifilm 35mm lens being a 35mm because in APSC crop factor, the lens is equivalent to a 52.5mm lens.

Hi Thorsten. Thanks for the video. I know the xpro2 can shoot raw & jpg together. But when you set the filmsimulation to B&W, your EVF becomes B&W too. Do you know if there's a workaround for that (besides using OVF)?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard6 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer the EVF to be in black and white (as I just need to see exposure and composition, not colors). I guess there is the option ot shoot raw and then use the b&w filers in Lightroom. When you import them, you have the Acros filter as well in Lightroom, for example.

What camera straps do you use? I’ve been looking for a solid leather strap like the ones you have. Wonderful videos, and I’m thankful to hear on the way you approach a photo and view light. Super inspiring

Hello Thorsten, an interesting video. You raise some good points. The predecessor, (the X-pro 1) is a much simpler and intuitive camera to operate, less thrills and sub menus and more in-keeping with the Leica system. I actually find the sensor output more to my liking. It rewards creativity. Have you tried it?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't try the X-Pro1. I did spend a morning coffee time counting menu points and sub-menus on the X-Pro2 and did the same on the Leica M10 and Leica Q and Leica TL2 to compare in the article. The Fuji X-Pro 2 is fundamentally a good camera. Made complicated, but fundamentally good.

Good afternoon, I am in process of either getting the graphite xpro 2 or maybe the Leica Q. Since you have experience with both, what would be your advise? I don’t do video. Thanks a lot
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard5 жыл бұрын
Leica Q any day, even a second-hand Leica Q which there are many these days where people upgrade to the 47MP Leica Q2. The Q is a great camera.

Love the light and color settings in your film. The camera and accessories look all chic in this beautiful room and settings. I was wondering if you are sponsored by Fujifilm or Leica, to out yourself over their products? I hope you don't mind me asking?

I'm independent. I'm not ambassador, sponsored or anything - and not seeking to be.

4:50 having extra buttons isn't bad, most photographers learn to use them and avoid pressing them. I find my extra buttons on my Panasonic GX8 great, I have ratio, HDR file quality, video in a single press and I use them all the time.

In my film days, I shot with Nikon SLR and Leica rangefinder 35mm cameras. In the digital age, I shot with Nikon dSLR and Fuji mirrorless cameras. I shot with the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 Fuji mirrorless as I waited for Leica to introduce a digital rangefinder that I liked. In 2017, the Leica M10 seemed to be close to the Leica rangefinder for which I had been waiting. Regretfully, my black M10 was defective and I had to send it back to Leica for a refund. This month, I bought a chrome M10. I hope I will have more luck with this one than I did with the first one.

Isn't that 35mm Fuji lens also a cropped 35mm (50-ish) on the X-pro2 body? I don't get that part when you say that 35 is 35....
@justlou7172 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, it seemed like an incorrect statement because it doesn’t match my understanding of what 35mm means. I know that Fuji does not label/name for “FF equivalent” so it’s a real 35mm. It would have the same crop Must say Thorsten, I love your videos and when you share your perspective. Bravo on taking on a new kit like the x-pro 2 to truly get to understand it 😀

Some people mount Leica lenses on Sony bodies. What are your thoughts on that? Can you do an introduction on various Leica lenses? They seem so confusing. How are Leica lenses compare to Zeiss Milvus lenses, which is also small and manual focus. How come Leica lenses are so expensive? And if they are so small, how can they perform as well as big DSLR lenses? Thanks :D
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard6 жыл бұрын
It seemed a good idea to get Leica lenses for Fuji, Sony, etc. But after I have tried, I see that the Leica M and Leica SL are the only sensors that offers 100% quality of the lens. (Those sensors have micro-optics on them to deal with the steep curve the light enter with).
