Review of Uncanny X-Men 200, by Chris Claremont and John Romita Jr, with inks by Dan Green, Marvel Comics 1985
Cover by John Romita Jr and Dan Green!
In this issue, in Paris, Magneto is on trial for his crimes; meanwhile, the X-Men return from Asgard and locate Prof. X, who suffers a heart attack; an unknown terrorist group commits a series of violent acts, signing them as done by the X-Men, demanding Magneto's freedom; in Paris, the trial continues amid protests against mutants generally; the court is attacked by the Fenris twins, who seek to avenge their father Baron von Strucker, by killing Magneto, Prof. X, and Gabrielle Haller; meanwhile, a heavily pregnant Madelyne Pryor is visited suddenly by Corsair and Lilandra, who are looking for Prof. X, and with the shock, she goes into labour; back in Paris, the Fenris twins are defeated, but escape; finally, believing he's about to die, Prof. X makes Magneto promise to take over for him at the School, which Magneto reluctantly agrees to do, just as Corsair and Lilandra whisk Prof. X through a stargate to receive emergency medical care from Sikorsky aboard the Starjammer!
Special thanks to J. Dillon who gifted me this near mint comic for review!

I like how Claremont is sowing the seeds for Madelyn's mistrust in Scott when (spoiler) Jean returns.

Yes, he's responding to the return of Jean, and treating an editorial fiat for narrative and characterisation potential.

You sometimes have great behind-the-scenes info. Please let me know if you've heard anything about this.... I've heard a people speculate that Claremont was setting up Jaspers as a future big villain for the X-Men. His appearance in this issue, combined with Roma's appearance in "Fall of the Mutants", is pointed to as "proof" that Claremont's original plan was for Jim Jaspers to be the main antagonist rather than the Adversary. I have a difficult time imagining the wackiness of Jaspers in the finale for issue 227. And I don't think his appearance in this issue is proof of anything, so I don't believe this to be true without solid evidence. But Claremont did have surprisingly odd ideas sometimes. Have you heard this rumor? Any thoughts?

As far as I know, Claremont intended for Jim Jaspers to be the villain behind the Mutant Massacre, which would have included the murder of the Hellfire Club as well as the Morlocks. He had the plot worked out in 1985 that would take him to 1987. In addition, Nimrod would have had a brief encounter with the Fury from Alan Moore's Marvel UK Captain Britain comic, which would have turned Nimrod into an unstoppable anti-mutant killing machine. The hair in the soup was Moore, who threw a hissy fit when he learned that Marvel US was going to use his characters without his permission or, likely more important, pay cheque for him. Claremont decided to nix his plans to use Moore's characters, and so he reworked his plot, by replacing Jaspers with both Mr Sinister and also with Naze/the Adversary.

@comicsbazaar4508 interesting. Thanks for the info. Nimrod vs the Fury would have been something else. Moore really had no ground to stand on. He didn't create Captain Britain, Merlin, or Roma. He picked up an existing character, built upon it....and then gets angry when someone else wants to use characters he created? Still....I really enjoyed Moore's Captain Britain, it's great stuff. I'm just not sure Jim Jaspers would have worked for American audiences. I can appreciate British humor....but the hats changing....why is that funny? "He wears hats! But the hat is different in every panel. And sometimes it's a silly hat! Hilarious!". I don't get it. I think Naze and the connection to Forge worked great. So maybe we were better off. I'm sure you know this....but in Claremont's 3rd run, he did use the Fury. And he did use Jaspers in his miniseries finale to the ongoing New Excalibur title.

@@paulreilly2304 Yes, I think the way Mutant Massacre and Fall of the Mutants panned out was better than what we know of the original plot plan. That speaks to Claremont's flexible creativity. When he was constrained, he got inventine. Yes, I have all of the 3rd run, Paul. That's a run that I'm looking forward to reviewing in due course.
