It happened and it is what it is. Comments and speculation as to the cause are not necessary. No one watching this video was present when it happened. It is just something that happens sometimes. Pretty much the end of the story there.

Don't feel too bad as it wasn't your fault , just poor magnum quality and so it goes ! Finding parts will be the trick . Glad to see Bella is ok !Keep up the good work !

I will be anxious to see what really happened in there. With ignition setups we take away a lot of lube and cooling from the extra fuel delivered in glow setups.

Sorry for your loss. I think it was just an unlucky failure. Thankfully your furry friends are there to make you feel better when you really need it.

Sorry David, that really sucks. Other than the blown crankcase and perhaps a rod, hopefully it can be rebuilt and run again.

Damn that sucks. Hope you can get around to a posting a tear down of what you think happened. On a positive note, the case doesn’t look like it broke in a high stress area so JB weld (or similar) could be used to repair the case. I’m sure there’s more to see once it’s opened up.
@dmrcflyr2

No, the case cannot be repaired with JB Weld. it is 3/8" in diameter with the chuck that came off lost.

Man, I was thinking the same thing today...Or even JB Weld/drill and tap a patch on the outside until you find a new case...

What? That was awful, sorry for your loss, seems to be left conecting rod lost cap/screw, or metal fatigue. This is the kind of things noone wants DAMM!

Someone said below, maybe timing too far advanced..? With engine converted to ignition system the stress on bearings and connecting rod is less than on glow engine, but in case of too advanced timing it is opposite. Maybe before disassembly recheck timing.. ? One more thing I do on my four stroke engine is that I ALWAYS run it on low rpm on cold start so the con rod can get up to some temperature before flying and before top rpm. Can't say this is the cause of your disaster, You will probably never know what caused this.. Anyway, I'm sorry it happened

I have an SC 160 twin i fly it using a 16-6 master prop im not saying you had this over propped but maybe a 16-6 will be less stress on the rods. But maybe it would have happened anyway. Hope you fix it up.

Hey man that is a full on "sh*t sandwich".. what a bummer.. but I'm sure it is nothing you did.. you did well not to drop kick it over the fence with rage!!!... in a few months on a dreary afternoon on the back of some real positives you will be in the right frame of mind and get it out and take a look out of curiosity.. you keep going as I'm sure you will..

I'm actually thinking of tearing it down tonight to provide closure here. I will not be investing money to repair it however.

OMG, that makes me SICK also...Its like it seized and threw a rod or something...At least we know it needs a new case...But, the question is WHY??? The tach read 8700, whats the max 9k???
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 5 жыл бұрын
The stated RPM specs in the manual are 2000-10000 RPM. So no, it wasn't an over speed condition.

2:56 watch the casing pop up just before the seizure...Now nobody wants this to happen to anyone, but to have this in a model engine archive is quite spectacular...We ALL can learn something from this...I know I am curious to know what caused it...these tiny engines are amazing, with all the tiny parts moving @ near 10-20k is a wonder it doesn't happen more often...
@johnkelinske1449

@@1unaffiliated1 Most likely neither the operator or timing at issue. If the timing had been too far advanced, it would have been running hot, that doesn't look to be the case. Tear down may show cause for sure, but high probability rod big end failure at the crank- either the rod end cap retention let go or less likely the rod itself went. Since this was a used engine metal fatigue is a possible gremlin.

I went back and reviewed all the vids of this particular engine. I have NEVER used FAI fuel before. But, I did notice that this engine didn't emit much smoke out the exhaust pipes only in a burst of throttle(on either fuel). I personally like to see smoke coming out of my nitro engines that way I know it is getting sufficient lube. Yeah, I thought about the timing also, but, I know Dave is pretty meticulous about his engines, it couldn't have been that far off and running that GOOD. If it were retarded it would run sluggish, if it were advanced it would, like you say run HOT or detonate. I'm leaning toward the lubrication aspect. Time will tell. Dave's already got it tore down, If I know him.
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 5 жыл бұрын
The FAI fuel I was using is Morgan's Omega and it has 17%, well within the manufacturer's recommendation which is 15%-20%. I always has plenty of oil coming from the breather vent during and after the runs. No I do not have it disassembled yet. I am not investing any money into this engine so I just put it back into the box and there it sits.
