Nice video as always Cody, I've suggested to Henry they should make a run each year of a "classic" caliber in one of their rifles. Such as a 32 special, 300 savage, 32wcf,25-20,218 bee , maybe you have more pull with them and could run it by them. 🤠

My Henry lever 22 magnum shoots most ammo well, but will not shoot the 40 grain Hornady HP. At 25 yards the target looked like I shot a load of buckshot into the target. I mostly use Winchester 40 grain HP ammo.

I own a Keltec 16" barrel .22 WMR and a Henry .22 WMR with 20.5" barrel. The longer barrel typically delivers 600fps faster velocity. The guy at the store said that barrel length would be negligibly different beyond 16". Not so. Ask Paul Herrell.

Good video. Informative. Pardon my ignorance on this. Regarding the 17HMR, would mv from the Henry be similar to that from a CZ 457? I dont own a Henry 17 or 22WMR, but do have at the moment a Win 9422M. So, the 22WMR was relevant for me too.

Most rifles that shoot the .17HMR have a 20-24in barrel to my knowledge so the muzzle velocity should be very similar if not the same.

I dont have a Henrys .22Mag. Bug i do have a Marlin .22 Mag Bolt Action that I can pluck a tick off a dogs ass at 100 yds all day. I never have shot a .17Hmr before but with speed im willing try. I live by my .22mag for varmints an rabbits. My house protection is a .22mag revolver a Ruger. Its an all around utilitarian round that can useful when shit hits the fan. Rounds are still cheapish an are abundant in my neck of the woods.

Nicely done. As you continue to improve on your videos, 1. Consider bringing a tape measure when doing gel tests, or shooting on targets that don't already have some kind of grids or bullseyes on them with measured lines. Tape measures are cheap, portable, easy to use, and highly effective. 2. Be selective in use of the word "bullet". More often than not, "cartridge" is the more appropriate word. Keep up the good work.

Good video. One caveat is that the .22 V-Max used here - must've been some kind of rather lower-energy round, can't read the name of brand/type of ammo on box, but it's neither Hornady nor CCi. FWIW, Hornady's .22 V-Max comes out much faster (boasts 2'300 fps, rather than 2'126) - and has MUCH better penetration. Like double of their Hornady .17 HMR V-Max, rather than a mere 1" more.

I can only share my personal experience with these two rounds and can understand why people choose what they do; no argument from me. My goal was to find something that could shoot up to coyote sized critters out to about 200 to 250 yards that wasn't a centerfire rifle; but it would mostly be for badgers and rock chucks. I started with a 22 magnum. I bought about four different types of ammo to test. The accuracy wasn't what I was wanting, so I sold that rifle and bought a different brand. Once again, accuracy let me down. Both rifles at 50 yards were about a 2.5" group. I then got a rifle in 17 hmr (it was a gift from my wife when I came home from Iraq in 2004). That thing can shoot about one hole at 50 yards. I can consistently hit a half gallon milk jug at 200 yards with ease. And it would do it with multiple brands of ammo; not just one. So it would serve my purpose a little better than what the 22 mag was doing. I'm sure some people have 22 mags that are tack drivers, but that wasn't the case for me; especially at distance.

"Both rifles at 50 yards were about a 2.5" group." - something wrong with those... .22 MAG can certainly do better, even out a $300 Savage-93 (now, that thing misfires about 10% of the time) but when it does fire - I get under 2" at 100 yards. At 50 yds, 8-shot groups can be covered by a quarter... I mostly fire Hornady's .22 30gr V-Max from my .22 But a .17 HMR is still more accurate, I agree. Interestingly, the hollow-point ones more so than the V-Max, in my experience.

@@suzukirider9030 I had an old friend that wanted a 22 mag rifle and I tried to talk him into a 17hmr instead. He went ahead and bought the 22 mag anyway; it was a Marlin XT-22Mag. It shot about as good as mine did; a five round group was the size of my fist at 50; with about four types of ammo. As much as he was disappointed, he kept the gun because he was determined to make it accurate. He changed out the bases, the rings and the scope. He died before he could find a combination that worked for him.

HMR is too big for small game? lolwat? It's literally the smallest round out there... well ok under 50 yrds can use .22 LR or .17 HM2 but there's no downside to using HMR, AND you get the range as a bonus. A bit louder. Like A BIT. It's nowhere near .223 loud, not even close. But that's the only downside I can think of. Still well under .50 cents per round, too. Even the quality stuff like Hornady and CCi.

@@tylesveque2373 chipmonks? rats? I suppose those can be "blown up" by a .17 HMR... On turkeys I can't even find where exactly I hit them, with a .22 WMR 30gr Hornady V-Max round. Well, that round isn't exactly known to expand. Other than the plastic tip it's quite a solid bullet actually.

I'm not going to start a youtube channel but I've seen quite a few of these comparisons between 17hmr and 22wmr. They all seem to "settle the question ". Here's the issue, try comparisons with something other than jello....I mean ballistics gell. Does any of these people realize that a 17hmr will go through a 4x4 but the 22wmr won't? By the same token a raccoon, fox, rabbit etc isn't made of jello. Just something to think about
